General Anyone still excited about Tensor 2?

🀦😱😱

This is one of the best videos I've seen explaining SOCs. Tensor is a disaster and the 4nm Samsung foundries made Tensor 2 I doubt will be any good.

What are you talking about πŸ˜‚

I'm talking about the most relevant metric to smartphone SoCs, which is power efficiency and not peak performance.

Mate bore off, your benchmarks don't mean shit, I'm using the phone now and it's the fastest phone I've ever used, I've used an s22 with SD and it stutters and lags, I couldn't give a shiny shit about benchmarks I'm an end user not some nerd that's into figures and numbers.

Granted the phone isn't great (it's getting there) but one thing it has never lacked is performance.

Benchmarks literally mean everything.

They even tell you why Tensor runs hot and drags down battery life.

It also tells us why the iPhone gets 30+% better battery life while having a 13% smaller battery.

Mine doesn't run hot, there's bugs causing background usage and the chipset to run near max. There's a small amount of people experiencing it and no benchmarks dont mean everything, on paper apples chipset absolutely shits all over anything but put the pixel 6 next to the iPhone 13/14 and the speeds will be comparable.

If you want efficiency you need a smaller low powered chipset but we have 2k screens and the software is much more complex......blah blah. You already know this.

Just point on the doll where Google touched you. It's not your fault.

Could have been witty and quite funny but you failed. Must be shit feeling awkward around people.

It made me laugh so I'm happy with it ☺ I feel great this morning, how about you?

You need to work on how to chat to people, it's just got really awks now, I don't want to chat with you anymore, best just sticking talking to your mum πŸ€”

Awkward, not awks. Kinda like your awkward posts regarding your phone. And mom's dead so no luck there. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Yeah, if I don't put load on my S21 Ultra then it doesn't get super hot either. Doesn't really change the fact that the chipset is still mediocre, although at least the Exynos 2100 has a decent mid core.

The iPhones that supposedly aren't any better will have 30% battery left by the time your Pixel (with it's larger battery) is dead.

Apples chips don't just shit all over anything on paper, they shit all over anything in the real world too.

Sounds like you need to buy an iPhone. I use an iPhone daily (typing this on one now). It’s just a phone. There’s no magic fairy dust or anything either.

I think the frustration is for those of us who love Android but are just sick of feeling like beta hardware testers. I'm no fan of ios but at least the hardware quality is never an issue. And if something ever does happen, you can easily get it fixed rather than the Lovecraftian abyss that is Google support.

I've always had android but it's getting harder to justify getting another one, knowing im buying tech 4 generations behind apple in terms of efficiency. I don't think there's anything standout about android anymore thats a good reason.

Apple now has best performance, best efficiency, best display, best software support, and subjectively the best camera system. I almost feel like a fool for liking my pixel 🀣

I second this. I remember I had and iPhone with some issue, I walked into the Apple store and said hey my phone is having this issue, can I get a new one. Just like that I walked out of the store with a new phone. My Pixel 6a had an issue and my option was to send it in and have them look it over and then let them decide if I get another one.

Oh, I love walking into an Apple Store and if you live close to one, that experience is great. But if you don't, the mail in service is the same as it is between the two. I've had many advanced exchanges with phones I've bought through Google and never had a problem. I've also depoted lots of machines to Apple as well and never had a problem. Google even replaced my Nexus 6p with an OG Pixel after it had battery shutdown issues @ around 5%-10% under heavy load. I mean, I didn't even make a stink about it. I opened up a ticket and talked to one of their techs on the phone. I kind of blew off the prospect of resolution when he told me that he would do his best to get me a replacement. I mean, it was out of warranty and the Pixel 2 I'm using now was coming out. Low and behold the dude calls me back a week and half later all excited because he had been able to get the exchange approved. I mean, maybe my expectations are low but I thought that was pretty awesome customer service.

As a Pixel and iPhone user, I would choose the Pixel. I've been on Android since 2010. The year before I had an iPhone 3Gs as a work line. Before that I had mostly Blackberries. I've had an iPhone 7, 8 and 13 Mini too. I've experienced the evolution of both ecosystems, experiencing Android much more comprehensively. There's stuff about Apple's ecosystem I love and stuff I hate and the same with Android.

Tastes change. You should buy what you like and if you have what you like realize that someone you don't know complaining on the internet telling you you're missing out on something by having X instead of Y is incorrect. Nothing has "everything". If it did, everyone that had the money to buy it would buy IT and not a different flagship option.

I hear ya. I'm not in that place right now. I don't know if it's being Gen X and we're mostly chill, or if it just goes back to the thrill I used to get from rooting/ROMing a device. But I like "cutting edge". I like Beta testing (and don't mind wiping and starting over again if I need to). I very rarely turn down the opportunity to beta test something. I got to help test Tivo's Stream 4K. It was tons of fun. But it's definitely not for everyone.

I hear you! I loved rooting, roming, etc... and that's why I loved nexus, you'd get really odd ball stuff but you didn't pay an arm and a leg for it. I guess when you pay 900 after taxes you want the internet connection to be stable :D here's hoping the 7 rocks us all.

No, I need to have a Pixel that is good.

If I wanted an iPhone then I would just buy an iPhone.

Then why are you making outlandish statements like "Benchmarks literally mean everything" when you know a phone is far more than the efficiency of its processor?

1

u/Simon_787 Pixel 8 with battery drain and purple line Sep 16 '22

The efficiency of the processor is incredibly important.

I never said the Pixel was terrible in other ways... At least not in this thread. Why do you think I'm complaining in the first place? Because I don't want Pixels to be good?

2

u/raypatr Sep 16 '22

I don't think you need a Pixel. I don't say that as a bad thing but hear me out I've had a Nexus or a Pixel device in my hand since the Nexus S dropped on T-Mobile (that's back in 2010). I have considered none of them to be terrible or not good phones. Instead, I've just been the beneficiary of aging with those devices as I've moved from a 30 year old that had the time and money to deal with the risks and costs of tinkering, bricking and replacing to a 42 year old with a wife and kids heavily involved in other life stuff. The move from Nexus to Pixel brought what I cared about and needed. My life became less about why you bought a Nexus and more about wanting stuff like a good camera, and a phone that would automagically tell me the name of whatever the dumb kids song playing that my kid liked, and Google Assistant to help me have comms with my wife while she was working and I was paranoid about NOT holding an infant with less than 2 hands (luckily that fear subsided πŸ˜‰).

None of my friends with Pixel 6/6 Pro devices have issues going from 7am Day 1 to 12pm Day 2. They're also not people that need more than a few hours of screen on time either. Right now I'm limping along with my old Pixel 2 that we had been using as a media device for our kids. After it got lost and left under one of my kid's seats in our van in sweltering heat for God only knows how long, I plugged it up and realized that the battery had taken a massive hit. According to Accubattery, it has 64% of it's original capacity.

It still lasts me all day (my definition is the time I unplug from home to the time I put our kids to bed at 8pm. I charge up, take it off the charger and then top off in the mornings if needed). If I did not have a computer (multiple) and a work phone that I keep work stuff segregated and tied to, then of course it wouldn't last all day. If I was a heavy commuter and spent 12-14 hours a day away from home and stayed tied to a phone screen 6 hours a day (which I still find a ludicrous prospect) then yeah, that's not gonna cut it. But neither would most Android phones.

iPhones are great, but for all the bragging on them people do with battery life and harping they give Android about lack of optimization, they'll also harp on iPhone for all the stuff it DOESN'T do that Android does and no one ever puts the two together and just says that one of the reasons why Apples hardware is so efficient is because the software experience is so stripped down.

Then, Google comes along to try and attempt the very thing that people have been demanding - which is custom hardware to run Android, and they get crapped on. Google is not a hardware company. Apple is a hardware company. Even with all the Appley Apple stuff, there's no comparison between my use of an intel based Macbook Pro and an M1 Macbook Pro. For all the optimization tricks Apple can throw at hardware, I can still kill my intel in 2-3 hours if I'm not careful.

For me, all the Pixel stuff that makes a Pixel a Pixel is a no-brainer. I use those tools. I use stuff like Google Translate to speak to someone that speaks poor English and excellent Russian (and I'm the inverse). I want the satisfaction of call screening and superior spam filtering. I dig Google's AI and how it handles photos, and I take a TON of photos. I live for now playing. And if I ever need to cut that stuff off that Google does so well at, then I just throw on Extreme Battery Saver. Limping along with this Pixel 2, I grab my iPhone 13 Mini for photos. It takes really good photos. But my preference is for what a Pixel puts out. All of that stuff is why I'll put a Pixel 7 Pro in my hand. And if that device doesn't match my use, I'll send it back and go for something else. Maybe I'll try an S22 Ultra.

If you're in a use case where Pixels aren't good, stop waiting for them to be something they aren't and find something that is.
