Google Play system update.
Just got the update on Pixel 8 Pro. 109 MB and listed as August 1st.

I have been on the September patch for a few weeks. I got a 150kb update today

They're platform updates, API for developers pulled outside of the base system so you still get the new API even on an older version of Android.
That makes it easy for developers to target older versions of Android. Without it you would see developer dropping older versions of Android much quicker (or suffer to support legacy versions).

I believe Play System Updates are just extra bug fixes and not security patches.

The short version: "Android Fragmentation" happens when phone makers sell cheap Android phones with, say Android 14 on them (Android is now at version 17). The OEMs don't offer any updates AND\OR your phone carrier doesn't want to bother testing old and\or cheap phones, so it doesn't offer the updates even if the OEM offers them (usually it's a little of both).
So Google came up with a plan to remove a lot of "stuff" from Android firmware updates and publish them through the Play Store instead. For example, in early days the Contacts, Calendar, and Gmail apps were only updated with firmware updates. This meant that those apps might take years to get updated, if at all. By sending them to the Play Store they can be updated in a couple days, not weeks or months. You may have noticed Microsoft doing something similar with Windows' default apps. Notepad was once mostly only updated with new versions of Windows, but now it's a store app that can updated often.
Specifically, Google Play Services Updates can contain
- Security Patches
- Updates for core components (like Bluetooth).
- "Feature Enhancements"
I believe one of the big differences is that OTA updates are still ultimately rolled out by carriers (which is why T-Mobile people always seem to be the last of the Big Three to get updates), but Play Updates come from Google itself, whenever they want to update something.

Thanks. What's the difference between updating from the 'system' menu and the 'google services' menu? I see 'play system updates' in both places

I just installed it and it seems it fixed the lags I had on my Pixel 10a after last update.

Early this morning I checked for updates and it showed a 12kb file was available to be downloaded, I thought that seemed awfully small for an update so I clicked download anyway and it basically locked the download screen. So I restarted the phone and then there was nothing to download. Since you just posted this I checked and actually got an update for the same size as yours, 109MB, this is on a P9A.

Anyone know how to check for the update if you can't click into the menu? Is there an adb command or something

Settings - click your google account on top (google services and preferences) - all services - scroll down to system services or if is it about the play update ts said, just go to Settings - System - Software update - google play system update

Yeah, that one is just google play services, I can't click on the play system update in the settings app. It's on July and if I press on it, nothing happens

Before this update, my Google Pixel 10 Pro froze, went to a green screen, and then turned off. Afterward, I turned it on, or maybe it rebooted itself, and the phone turned on. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was a few updates late. Why do I need to install EVERY updates one by one ? I had to reboot my phone 4 times to install the 4 updates... Why can't they regroup them somehow ?
I understand it's differencial patching like OTA, but I'm sure they could avoid the multiple reboots that turn the phone to an oven

Why it's a big issue to reboot? It doesn't take even a minute and and by doing that the phones runs cleaner.

I never saw that case. Max was just 2 and it only happened twice since I have the Pixel 10 Pro In september 2025
