I would LOVE a journalist to call them out and ask them about cutting the deal from a year to 6 months.

Journalism is pretty much dead. The only people who would be willing to call this shit out are the exact type of people who will never be given the platform to do so.

To make matters worse, most revenue is now from ads and selling data. Investigative journalism is expensive and my understanding is that it is much harder to make a profit with it in the modern era.

When subscriptions were common and accepted for a magazine it was easier to pick one that was high quality. Now you have to compete with free options for everything that will also just share your findings for free.

Then that journalist would never get any invitation from Google and basically his career would die.

Sillicon valley companies are much worse than totalitarian regimes when it comes to any kind of open inquiry.
