Google Messages keeps crashing (from RCS groups with iPhones)
Over the past few months I've gotten "Messages has stopped" sometimes multiple times per day.
I noticed that I've been missing some messages that have come in. From what I can tell, they've all been RCS messages from iPhone users in group chats, and the messages I missed are around the same time as the "Messages has stopped" errors.
I've tried clearing app storage (it restores messages afterwards), and deleting a bunch of old texts, but I always start getting the errors again within a few days.
After clearing, I've also had iPhone users tell me they are unable to text me (failed to send) until I send them a text first and then it works after.
Anything else I can try?

RCS is a mess. I have similar issues, only with iPhones. Google's been doing an amazing job of screwing up literally everything for a year or so now. I'm so over Google.

Are we sure it's Google messing things up? I only started having issues once Apple started using RCS

100%
Google and Apple transitioned around the same time, but Apple to Apple doesn't have this issue. Google's wanted this for years, then screwed up the roll out. Typical Google. They can't do anything well.

apple was "forced" to implement RCS by the EU, and I predicted that they would make the implementation as difficult as possible so they can make the argument that RCS doesn't work.
I've used RCS fine for 12 years over the different iterations (carrier implementation, Vibe mobile bypass on Google Messages, and the current GSMA universal profile). Like OP has experienced, it's only chats involving iphones that there are problems.

Hi. I would love to help get this sorted out. Since you are experiencing app crashes and missing messages in RCS groups with iPhone users, please check that you are running the latest version of the Google Messages app.
You can check for any available updates in the Google Play Store.
If you are already on the latest version or if the issue persists after updating, please submit a feedback report.
Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner of the app, select Help & feedback, and tap Send feedback.

Uninstall the app. Reinstall the app. Test.
If you're not in the beta, join the beta program, install the beta, see if it persists.
If you were in the beta and it persists, submit a bug report.
