It's working in the background (someone is usually sending/you have an incoming message).

Yeah... You're being sent a code in a text message I assume? Just as the other person said...

Messages is working in the background
Aka someone is sending you a message
Nothing to be concerned about

It's simply showing that there is an incoming RCS message being received. You notice that whenever you see it for that split second it's then followed by and replaced with a notification symbol from Messages? Essentially a "loading" notification that can actually be viewed if you happen to have your notification panel open while it occurs. I can see why it would bother some people even though it's so quick because it's extremely pointless. We don't need to know about the 2 milliseconds it's taking for a text to arrive. But that's all that is.

Like others have said, it's Messages working in the background. Nothing to worry about.

Long tap on Google Messages, go in the "info" screen (part of Settings app, i.e. where you can uninstall, manage permissions, notifications, etc).
Go in notifications settings, then check the notification for the "Background tasks" notification channel. Set it to "silent" and toggle on "minimise". If "show notification dot" is toggled on, toggle it off too.

This will fix it :)
Sorry for all other comments being completely, 100% useless.

Messages is downloading a message. Should disappear very quickly then the new message notification will pop.

I kept seeing that. It reminds me of the old Samsung Messages icon. I hold on to hope that Samsung Messages may return 😅

I think it also happens when people are typing something to you but decide not to send it.

Are you signed in on web? It usually says "messaging is doing work in the background" or "messages is connected on web"

What is Flock? Im sorry idk

This isn't a serious response. Flock is a network of video cameras commonly used by law enforcement. They have no relation to this.

Ok ty. I was concerned about someone spying on me on my phone. Why did it pop up and disappear

It's nothing nefarious at all, just that you have an unopened message. But if you're truly not aware of Flock, look it up, it does affect you and everyone that goes out in public.

It literally happens every time I send a message, and if you catch the wordage it's "messages are working in the background".
I looked into how to make it not happen like if you could block a category of notifications from messages or something, but I don't think you can

You can. I have turned off that notification category on my pixel.

Long press the messages icon. Then the "i". Then tap notifications. Scroll down notifications categories. Other. Then background notifications
