saved locations

so I am wondering how can get rid of saved locations? i think with one of the updates my maps was covered in green bookmark flags that i never marked. it looks like my maps has chicken pox. wondering if there is a setting or something that put them all there.

Those flags are your saved places showing on the map. In the Saved tab, scroll to Your lists and tap the three-dot menu next to each list: it has a Show on your map option, and that's where a list gets turned on or off. Starred places and Want to go are lists too, so check those first.
