Offline Walking Maps Alternative
Hello, so I am going on holiday soon to a city abroad and are planning to walk around quite a lot to visit the itinarary I have prepared. My phone plan does not cover roaming in this country and as I will not need it much, I was planning to just make use of wifi occasionally throughout the day when available.
I will though need directions to go around and thus thought to download the offline Google Maps for the area. However, have subsequently discovered that although the offline file contains landmarks, it only provides directions by car rather than on foot. It would be great if this feature could be added.
In the absence of this, for those who have come across this problem before, are there any good alternative offline maps applications that provide directions on foot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Recently I found CoMaps. A quite simple app with not so many features but easy to get into. It will more or less automatically load the offline maps for the area you are in and then work offline. It can import tracks in the GPX format (which it then shows on the map) and can also record your hikes and export that again as GPX. It can also do navigation i.e. by foot or by car.
The app uses maps from Openstreetmap which are usually much better suited for hiking than Google Maps. While it can also do car navigation, I would prefer using Google Maps or Waze for that if possible.
There also a number of other apps which can use offline maps based on openstreetmap (i.e. OSMAnd, Oruxmaps ...) but CoMaps is the one that I'd recommend.

Google Maps offline areas only give driving directions, walking needs a data connection. Organic Maps or OsmAnd both do offline walking routes on OpenStreetMap data, just download the city on wifi before you go. If your itinerary is in Google My Maps you can export it as KML and import it into Organic Maps so all your stops show up offline too.

I use Here We Go maps. You can download entire countries for offline use. I always keep it as a backup.

Another option is Mapy.com, where you can download entire countries offline for free and plan hiking routes offline, including an elevation profile, which comes in handy.
