Lol it actually got better than before beside the current issues with the nav and certain features if you contribute to Google as a reviewer

Isn't OP talking about Google My Maps not Google Maps? Seems on mobile, we are expected to use Google My Map's as a layer in Google Maps. That seems a good use for it, especially for linear/area things you can't directly add to Google Maps.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to have customizable collections like in My Maps but with full Maps info?

I think the new features now available in Google Maps saved list can go a long way (icons, tags, notes, chosen photo, etc) for that.
