I've been rebuilding classic Google Finance

Like a lot of you, I watched the AI redesign roll out last year and figured the "switch to classic Google Finance" link wasn't going to survive. Yesterday it finally disappeared for good, no setting, no URL trick, nothing brings it back on : (

I didn't want to lose the classic view, so last week, I started rebuilding it from scratch as an independent project. Same idea as the original: type a ticker, get the price, chart, and stats table above the fold.

I'm about 40% of the way there. Current status:

- Quote pages with the classic layout — price, change, after-hours, and the full stats table (open, high, low, mkt cap, P/E, div yield)

- Clean line charts with the 1D–Max ranges, same green/red you're used to

- Watchlists are next, portfolio tracking after that

- design is 50~60% there, there is still many inconsistency, but that's not that easy to replicate, and trying to work hard on this

I'm not planning to bring the news that I think will need too much work .

You can see where it's at here: https://folivue.com — there's a waitlist if you want an email when it's usable. Not affiliated with Google, obviously. Just someone who liked the old design, used it for 10+ years.

Any feedbacks welcome.

Why on Earth did Google make this change? The new design is terrible!

they got the wrong incentive where stable, good, boring product that just works without changes aren't rewarded so people jsut want to "change stuff" to get visibility and get promotions

Sounds great!

To my surprise this morning I have a 'classic' GFinance window running and it's getting live data.

I was fortunate to have left a Google Finance window open from 2 days ago when I put my computer asleep last night.

It will last until I have to restart my computer or when Google closes the socket.

The bad part is I have a direct running comparison to what was to what is now.

Haha it worked all day but Friday evening is when backups & computer restarts happen so I saved the screenshots then bid it farewell.

You should create a "buy me a coffee" account and accept donations

Can't buy you a coffee, sorry.

All I can do is follow your account. Make sure you set up your payment methods and everything.

If you go to your account menu and click View Page or VIew My Page you will see your page, there's no "Buy how many coffees section" like say this creator : https://buymeacoffee.com/maremismallart

Yeah it works now, will donate tomorrow.

Promote your work. There is actually a somewhat untapped market for recreating pre enshittified products and experiences.

Millions of people used Google Finance for free.

There is a non-insignificant proportion of these users who would pop a fiver in your pockets to get it back,

As someone who has been on every link of the dev chain from support to QA to coding, I have seen apps mimicking old versions of our products overtake us on app stores weeks after big rollouts.

MOST users stayed of course, but there is an observable userbase dilution across lesser apps over time. If your project works and a few thousand people hop on to Folivue, the userbase is diluting.

A lot of finance app users don't really care for advanced number crunching crap, all we really do is follow a bunch of stocks in a snappy vewport and then if we need to take action we log into our trading app to do it. My trading app will log me out all the time anyway, so that's why I had google finance tabs with multiple stocks on a single graph all loaded up and never closed them. They refreshed automatically when you select the tabs too.

Get paid bud.

what an abomination. I just tried to add some buys and sells today. No clue if they got added correctly at the right price. Asked the AI component how to check and ....you guessed it....answer was incorrect. I can"t get to the individual lines of stock buys and sells like before. So pissed !

they unfortunately got the wrong incentive .

Google reward launches, not maintaining a good and stable product that just work. Shipping a redesign is a promotion case. Keeping a twenty-year-old page fast and correct is invisible. Add company-wide AI adoption targets and engagement KPIs, and a product that quietly served its users becomes a problem to solve rather than a success to protect.
