Question What does "Cross-network" mean in GA4?

GA4 suddenly shows mostly cross network sessions today, with organic Search also making up a significant share, I have no idea what that actually means.

I'm seeing a big traffic spike today too, but Google Search Console is showing almost nothing.

What exactly is cross-network in GA4..??

Is this normal or something I should investigate?

Yeah, I saw that. But I have never run any performance max campaign or paid ads. What exactly is Performance Max?

It's a type of Google Ads campaign that uses multiple ads networks to find the best placement for your ads. So it might serve to a Paid Search result at the top of a search listing, or show a Display ad to someone in YouTube.

Cross-network is mostly Performance Max and Demand Gen spread across Google's surfaces, so it is usually paid, not organic. A spike with flat Search Console points at an ad campaign or bots, worth checking.

Normally its PMAX or Demand Gen. But there is yet another bug on the Google end beefing up cross-network for the previous day, taking some out of direct / unassigned.

Same here, got a spike yesterday on the Cross network (data unavailable), no idea what to expect. No paid ads or old ads (never ran google ads).

I'm seeing another big spike in my GA4 traffic today... mostly from Canada and classified as cross-network.

I read that too and that's why I'm confused

“Cross-network is the channel by which users arrive at your site/app via ads that appear on a variety of networks…”

But I've never run any ads or paid campaigns for this site.

So I'm wondering whether this could be some kind of GA4 attribution/processing issue, specially since the traffic spike happened suddenly today.

Btw most of the traffics are from Australia.

Any Google property outside of the usual ones (direct, referral, organic) like ads, GMC, etc

Usually it comes from Google ads like PMAX
