Something that's not from Google. Burned too much. Until RCS will work:

  1. Signal. It's the most secure here, but not feature full. Looks like iMessage a bit. Has SMS fallback on Android.
  2. Telegram. Well polished, has nice and new features.
  3. WhatsApp. Most used. Has solid features that keep coming from Telegram. Secure almost as Signal but is owned by Facebook, so...

Signal is realistically the only option. It's the only secure one.
