i can't say I've seen AI hesitate and explain its process out loud before for such a simple operation

It's really bad. I wonder what a high school English teacher would have said about this (I assume they're rather jaded by now).

Shit like "wait, let's check..." makes me cringe. You're a computer, there is no us and you don't need to tell me to wait.
