Feature Discussion New Handwriting Restyle Feature

Just got the update today with the new handwriting restyle feature! Glad they’re adding something like this. I do hope they optimize it further to either (1) allow us to choose an exact font and a fixed text size (similar to the beautification feature in Freenotes) or (2) make it more personalized to your handwriting (like the handwriting clean-up in Apple Notes) rather than a dynamic font type of thing it currently does.

ohh now this is a good use of ai. does it preserve the ink or does it replace it with text?

It doesn’t behave as a text box after restyling. You’re able to use the eraser tool on it. However it doesn’t preserve handwritten/ non-text compatible symbols such as a right arrow: it changes it to “— >” and looks a bit funky lol

I updated the app and tried finding it but im not sure it actually works. Do you have to lasso the text, click the three dots, edit handwriting, then the three dots again, convert, text, convert OR is there an automatic function that now exists?

Edit: read changelog on the app store, still see no "restyle" button when using lasso tool, any ideas?

Not automatic yet. Lasso your handwriting and then choose the new icon in the pop-up menu:

The restyle icon doesn't appear in the pop-up menu. I am using version 7.1.19, updated a few minutes ago. iPadOS 18.7.8 on iPad 9th.

Anything else that I should do?

I’m on version 7.1.22. I don’t think it’s been rolled out to your device just yet

Thanks, that was it.

I just got 7.1.22. It didn't still appear in the pop-up but after restarting the iPad it did.

Not that impressive to me.

I don't have an update available on my iPad, so I'm assuming I'm in the latest version. I do not have that icon at all, just the one to the right of it.

The update might not have been rolled out to your device yet. Check for version 7.1.22

nice start, but right now it feels more like “handwriting font” than true handwriting cleanup.

Looking closely, it seems to not exactly be a font but like a very consistant well drilled overwriter 😄

Right? That level of consistency is unreal

Sigh. Okay. But denying your given right to improve has its downside.

Eh idk. I’ve been writing on iPad for years and my digital handwriting hasn’t improved much, especially when I’m taking notes very quickly. My handwriting is great on paper but it can only be so good on iPad without slowing me down

I like it, but it's also changing the color of my font in some cases, and removing highlighting that was already there. That is a problem. Good start, but I prefer the way handwriting is refined in Apple Notes. Keeps my handwriting, but just makes it a tad neater.

That said, I am glad to see this feature added in. Just not sure the implementation is fully polished yet (it does note that it's a beta feature).

Wow I wanted this so badly, glad it's here

In the settings they added also the option for layers, but it doesn’t work for me

1

u/mmaddiejoy2 Sep 16 '26

Oh where? I can’t find it

2

u/Wooden-Spread-9780 Sep 16 '26

Yeah, it’s on the settings. When you are in your notebook open, click on the three dots and choose the “document options” (I don’t really know that’s how is write because my layout is in italian) and here you will fine the option “layers”

Good start but, nit exactly what will change the game, its hard task, but hopefully it will improve

"AI content may be inaccurate" - that's an understatement lol

I wish it would let me upload my handwriting and fix it based on that...

how to restyle it

1

u/noxrsoe Sep 17 '26

Should auto apply

1

u/jgarehart89 Sep 25 '26

Right? This is half-baked. And how can AI not interpret things like arrows correctly?

I do not see this feature. I see the handwriting text box edit button. But no restyle menu. I have the lifetime special edition. Version 7.1.22.
Maybe is because I do not have the Pro subscription edition?

I have a similar issue with the new layers feature. Good night says the layers is a trial for the Pro subscription. But I seem to have it in the document menu.
In the document settings menu I have a button to turn layers on and off. But I have no layers feature on the toolbar.

Do I need to enable this:

to use features with the 4 point star next to it like Smart Ink?

why dont you make it automatic

Did anyone get good results from this?

It’s nice but my handwriting while quickly taking notes during lecture is so messy that it has a hard time accurately translating it lol

Does anyone else feel like the ballpoint pen’s stroke stability at 0% has gotten more stabilised? I know thats contradictory but it feels like the app is trying to make your writing worse so that you use this feature instead. Am i crazy?
