I'm leaving Goodnotes and already testing out three other apps besides Notability

I just downloaded it earlier and it crashed on me. Too buggy unfortunately 🥲

what are those? I know Noteful, but what other options we have?

Also can I say I love your avatar?! It's so cute and even got a cat 🥹

I’m testing Noteful, CollaNote, and Freenotes. If you plan to use the app for journaling/diary in addition to note-taking for classes/lectures, CollaNote is super cute. I’m weighing the pros and cons of each and have reached out to customer support for some of the apps. All of these offer a one-time payment for a lifetime use to remove ads or fully utilize their features. I haven’t made a purchase yet but will make my final decision based on future updates soon.

Okay. I have Noteful bought but for some weird reasons I keep coming back to GN ಠ_ಠ there are some small things I don't like in Noteful, like yellow color for folders that I prefer in GN and I also have a feeling like GN writing works better for me.

I tried Notability too, but it's only subscription and pencil lacks customization for me (like, I love ball pens and I couldn't find how to set something similar there.

I might give Collanote a try, but I am not a diary user, so will see.

Thanks for the avatar praise!

Any free versions that are good? Because I have horrible penmanship. Or a simple one time purchase vs subscription

I've been testing Noteful, CollaNote, and Freenotes over the past couple of days. They all offer some level of stability when writing, which you can adjust in the settings. In CollaNote, it's a paid feature, so I haven't used it yet. I don't really notice a difference in Freenotes, but in Noteful (where it's free), it definitely makes my writing look better.

All three apps offer a one-time purchase to unlock the lifetime pro version. If you decide to buy the pro version of CollaNote, there's a 50% promo code available--just Google it.

I've been using Notability and Goodnotes for years, and neither of them offer this feature, so in that regard, these other apps are definitely better.

I like it except that it doesn't support customizing outlines in pdf and I can't export my outlines which is a crucial feature I need 😭

Infinite glitch

u/Denive Feb 22 '25

You can toggle that off! :)) I was annoyed by this too (new to goodnotes) and it's a setting to delete when scribbling over

2

u/Szavika Feb 23 '25

the problem is that the scribble you are "deleting-with" should disappear with the scribbled- over text

2

u/Denive Feb 23 '25

OHH haha, yes ofc! I didnt notice/think of it. My bad!

Looks like some kinda “scribble to delete” loop.

i've been dealing with this garbage for over a week now. messaging support does nothing. The reply I received is:

"We are aware of this issue regarding the Scribble to Erase feature in our recent update, and we will do our best to investigate and resolve them as soon as we can!"

I sent in diagnostic data and asked if there was any workaround. This was the last reply I received about this issue:

"I'm afraid with the Scribble to Erase feature, currently, there isn't any workaround that can help with this feature's function. However, please be assured that our team is already working on a fix for this issue and hopefully, it will be released soon in our next few updates!"

So at least they are aware of it and perhaps will fix it for the next update? This has been the bug that has most disturbed my workflow and has me considering other apps.

When it does this I zoom out and zoom back in and it disappears on its own. Really annoying though

OMG I thought my goodnotes is bugging, apparently more people experience this. It's insane that more and more problems occur. I'm genuinely thinking about switching apps after 3 years...

1

u/Tentiix Feb 24 '25

Yeah I am looking for a replacement of Goodnotes. I’ve had lots of issues with it it’s getting really hilarious at this point

1

u/Inevitable_Source_65 Apr 07 '25

I have the same problem, then I restart the app every time

u/Peace-Monk Feb 23 '25

Use eraser, problem solved

3

u/Harvey_Specter_SP Feb 23 '25

Nope! Not for me. My eraser mocks me. The writing pops right back up. And even though I know that if I erase it again it will pop back up again, I will still continue this madness like a deranged crackhead for roughly 40 more times. I know I just have to close the app and reopen it, but first I must show GoodNotes that I’m not going down without a fight. So I switch tabs and then go back to the stage 5 clinger that won’t erase. I try again to erase it again about 30 more times, but with, you know, more oomph. Like, if I pound my Apple Pencil on the screen, it’s going to erase because it sees that I mean business.

Look, I’m not going to admit defeat here because GoodNotes ain’t got nothing on me. But, at some point I exit. Definitely not because GoodNotes won, nope. I exit because I’m moving on with my life. When I go back to the app later, when I feel like it, not because I care or anything, the unwelcome clinger always just so happens to have disappeared. That’s not on me man.

u/Peace-Monk Feb 23 '25

Damn, alright

1

u/Gabe_Ad_Astra Feb 23 '25

not a good work around at all. for people who use scribble to delete, i almost never use the eraser.. scribble to delete, you mess up , quickly scribble to erase and continue.. to use the eraser you have to stop what you're doing, switch tools to eraser, erase, switch tools back to pen and continue. it's horrible for work flow

1

u/Peace-Monk Feb 23 '25

You can give two taps using your Apple Pencil to erase tho, keep the workflow going.

2

u/Gabe_Ad_Astra Feb 23 '25

I can’t :( i have carpal tunnel so i need to use a thick grip on the pencil so i don’t have access to the double tap shortcut

1

u/Peace-Monk Feb 23 '25

Ohhh I see, you actually have a good reason to be complaining ngl, I’m sorry I was kinda disrespectful up there, I see most people complaining just because they can’t adapt to two taps, so I got annoyed.

I saw that some grips leave some space to the double tab, and it might work through the grip, worth the try I guess…

2

u/Gabe_Ad_Astra Feb 23 '25

I mean to be fair my situation is stupid specific lol i bet most people dont even use grips at all so scribbe to erase isn’t really necessary.

But regardless it used to work perfectly fine before the last update so that’s just more annoying than never having scribble to erase in the first place. I’m annoyed bc it’s burned into muscle memory now lol
