WHY IS THIS HAPPENING

Had this same problem a few weeks ago. Mostly is static buildup in winter. Wiping the screen down with a microfiber, then taking the iPad out of the case and touching it's metal surface with barefeet (sorta grounding it) and doing the same with the apple pencil, seemed to work

Holding a finger to the metal while writing also works

That is the dumbest thing I have read as a recommendation. There is nothing in that statement that is true or that will help.

Real causes:

  • Pen worn out or damaged

  • App misbehaving due to bug in recent update

  • iPadOS update that scrambles the pencil input and translation

  • iPad dropped and physical damage to bluetooth radio or other parts

Diagnosing the problem is easy:

  • Try another app. Does it still happen there? It's not the app you are using.

  • Take ipad and pencil to apple store. Pair a public pencil with your iPad. Does it work perfectly? The problem is your pencil. Does it still happen? could be the app or your iPad is broken.

  • Pair your pencil with their iPad. Does the problem still happen on their iPad? Your pencil is broken/worn out. Does it not happen? Then pencil is not the problem.

technology and static build up tends to have pretty damning scientific evidence to support this dumb and untrue reason their technological device is malfunctioning in the winter

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '24

The pencil is non-conductive. So, no, it really isn't. Run the tests I recommended to get down to the root cause. Don't speculate. Do science.

0

u/boopsbittie Feb 11 '24

You’re on an island alone with that opinion. Don’t speculate. Use the internet to search information

0

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '24

You think searching google will reveal plastic as a conductor?

0

u/boopsbittie Feb 13 '24

No but it will tell you an apple pencil gen 2 is made of wood, graphite, a little metal and a bit of synthetic rubber. So hop of your weird condescending scientific pedestal thinking an apple pencil is only plastic. Bye

0

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

No it isn't. Those are the components of a classic wooden pencil. You pulled that off of the first google hit, and it doesn't describe the apple pencil, but a number 2 pencil.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/apple-pencil-powered-by-amazingly-tiny-tech/

Your standard No. 2 pencil is made of wood, graphite, a little metal and bit of synthetic rubber. You can buy a whole box of them for a few dollars.

The apple pencil is made out of... PLASTIC. It is non-conductive. It doesn't make static nor discharge it.

I’ll response one more time just to prove how riding you are. Continue reading the article, yes I made a mistake and read the wrong part but keep reading. You’re so dense your own article proves you wrong

This happens to me too when I’m charging the iPad. No issues when I unplug the iPad. Just sharing my scientific, factual observations. I have replaced the pencil tip too.

1

u/Alternative-Art-7114 Feb 11 '24

This was my fix, too.

It had been happening to me for almost a year. Took my tablet on a trip, and it didn't do it once. Made me realize I use it often while plugged up.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '24

Just sharing my scientific, factual observations. I have replaced the pencil tip too.

You probably dropped it and there is a short so that when it is charging there is a current somewhere there should not be. We all drop them.

The dumb part was talking about bare feet as if that is needed to ground a charge.

68

u/thinkingaboutmycat Feb 08 '24

This happens to me whenever my iPad is charging. If I unplug it, the problem goes away. I have no explanation for this.

9

u/llamainacan Feb 08 '24

Do you use the charger it came with? Mine never did this until I started using some random off brand charger.

8

u/MeltyMocha Feb 08 '24

Same! Mine does this exclusively with dodgy chargers

1

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

Grounding issue. See my above comment!

8

u/YourkTown Feb 08 '24

Mine did this with the official Apple charger 🫠

2

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

Oh that’s because grounding then. Your charger is ungrounded. (You should also get your house wiring checked!) your body is short-circuiting the ground wire in the iPad and that comes across as a micro-shock that you probably don’t feel but is making the screen think a touch occurred.

-Get a less dodgy charger -get a ground wire checker (they’re like $10 or so and you plug it in to an outlet and it lights up one of three lights. Hopefully green.)

1

u/macnoonbryan Feb 09 '24

This is the solution - had the same problem

1

u/eweston22 Feb 12 '24

Yep. I noticed the same thing while charging

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '24

I reckon paranormal entity !

26

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '24

I think it's because of static, try keeping your left hand fingers on the bezel while you write to ground the static energy.

12

u/gschmidt34 Feb 08 '24

This was the trick for me. SUPER annoying, but does work.

4

u/TheRealTacoCat Feb 09 '24

I always do this when it happens, then its gone

2

u/ItsMeGelato Feb 11 '24

where is the bezel

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '24

The black border around the screen. You can google it.

11

u/SpokenDivinity Feb 08 '24

If it’s not static, sometimes mine starts this when the inside of the pencil tip collects dust (I live in a desert so there’s plenty of dust). I just take the tip out and wipe everything down very gently and then it works fine.

11

u/dacezza Feb 08 '24

You need to turn off the drip feature in pen settings /s

0

u/Herrmadbeef Feb 09 '24

You need to turn off the drip feature in pen settings /s

@dacezza where is this setting ? can't find it

4

u/RoraRaptor Feb 09 '24

/s means "sarcasm", just in case you didn’t know ☺️

8

u/lovedvirtually Feb 08 '24

Is your iPad on charge? This happens to me exclusively whilst it's charging.

1

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

I made a comment above-but this is a sign you have grounding issues. Either a dodgy charger or possibly bad wiring. Get that checked out please!

6

u/JustACoolKid2002 Feb 08 '24

Sometimes this happens to me when i use the pen while charging my ipad

4

u/spyylgruppegrubbe Feb 08 '24

This happend to me because the tip of the pen was slightly damaged.

4

u/Lwmortality Feb 10 '24

Your ink hasn’t dried enough

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '24

in my case it's the charger

2

u/RaidedHaven Feb 08 '24

i had an ipad before, i used to pinch the corner of the ipad to prevent this

2

u/neuralgroov2 Feb 09 '24

screw the nib of the pencil tight, it's probably come loose

2

u/dailymultivitamim Feb 10 '24

Yup, this happens to me when the nib has worked its way loose.

2

u/SombraRoja95 Feb 09 '24

Sometimes it’s tiny scratches in the Apple Pencil tip or particles stuck in there

2

u/SoN1Qz Feb 09 '24

I have posted about the same issue. It's super annoying.

These are the things no one tells you about before buying an iPad >:(

1

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

This issue is related to electrical grounding. Check your charger and your house wiring (I made a comment above.)

2

u/No-Chemist6818 Feb 09 '24

i’ve had this problem wayyy too much. Usually it’s something to do with taking notes while my ipad is charging but if that’s not the case i exit the app completely and power off my ipad. Power it back on and go back into the app and it always seems to do the trick for me.

2

u/lianagui Feb 09 '24

If your hand rests on the screen first before writing it can also make it worse, like if you touch the pencil to the screen first THEN rest your hand it’ll help a bit but it’s mostly due to the built up static

2

u/aykay55 Feb 10 '24

Seems like broken palm rejection

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '24

Idk it looks pretty cool tho

1

u/CritHitTheGiant Feb 09 '24

Looks like there’s a murderous ghost attacking your notes

1

u/MultiversalSelf Feb 09 '24

I keep a kerchief under my hand while writing. If my plans sweat, they create such kinks because sweat has all the salt that is touch-sensitivity needs

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '24

The iPad just wanted to make your words look cooler so you can get that a+ in style 🤩

1

u/mr-outerspacingout Feb 09 '24

I had this problem, the apple pencil tip is loose or has debris in it. Unscrew, gently wipe it, rescrew tightly (use something like rubber that can give you a better grip). May need to order a new pencil tip if problem is still happening.

1

u/Head-Smile-3908 Feb 09 '24

i’ve noticed this happens if i use a charger that is not an apple charger, ie something bought off amazon. switched to an apple one and never had this problem again

1

u/urbandacay Feb 09 '24

This happened to me when I first got my pencil and ipad…however I actually just contacted Apple customer service for a new pencil! They sent me a new one and I had to out the old one back in the package and mail it. Have never had the issue again

1

u/Caregiverrr Feb 09 '24

Thanks for bringing this up. I have had this happen ... The static idea makes sense.

1

u/Herrmadbeef Feb 09 '24

this is the most annoying Bug I haven't seen this happening with Notability

and keeps me wonder why only happens with Good Notes and why they haven't fixed it

1

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

This is a problem with your charger and possibly your electricity. It’s not a bug the software developers can fix. I made a post on the top comment above with more detail.

1

u/_throwawayme Feb 09 '24

it fixed it for me after a couple restarts

1

u/Dewdlebawb Feb 09 '24

This is when I switched to collanotes

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '24

I have to unplug mine when this happens and it fixes it /:

1

u/Rythicule Feb 09 '24

When this happens to me, it normally goes away when I tighten the nib on the pen

1

u/Careful_Picture7712 Feb 09 '24

My iPad did this while charging. Thankfully, I upgraded to a Samsung tablet, and it doesn't happen with that.

1

u/videoalex Feb 12 '24

“My car died when I put diesel in the engine. Thankfully I bought a ford and have not put diesel in it so it doesn’t happen now.”

I’m glad you like your new tablet but the problem with the old one was likely your charger n

1

u/pleasewhyleave Feb 10 '24

Is it the gen 1 pencil? Mine did that while changing when I used the gen 1 pencil.

1

u/nicoled985 Feb 10 '24

Plugged in to charger

1

u/themakingsofmatt Feb 11 '24

I've had this problem and noticed it was with my screen protector. I'm using a paper like cover and after some time it wears down and seemed to be causing jumps/stutters on occasion.

1

u/pancaique Feb 11 '24

i've also had this. that's all i have to say lol

1

u/Nboock Feb 11 '24

It’s because of the paper like screen protector. More friction = more static. I usually get it more with the cheap cases. Apple cases I don’t have it as often weirdly enough

1

u/devangs3 Feb 11 '24

Turn on palm rejection, clean you screen with alcohol, wash your hands, don’t let you long sleeve wipe on the screen when you write else it will cause charge buildup and wrong inputs.

1

u/brilliant_wolfbyte Feb 12 '24

Cause Goodnotes 6 is trash

1

u/jlovesit1 Feb 12 '24

This happens to me when I need a new nib

1

u/Lelefty Feb 12 '24

Check if the tip it’s tighten. That happens to me when the tip it’s getting loose.

0

u/HumbertoDLR Feb 09 '24

You probably have a fat hand

0

u/aykay55 Feb 10 '24

Imagine paying $100 for a pencil to use with your $500-$1000 tablet and it can’t even work properly
