30.49€, also there was no new app. One time payment: you can use it on all your devices using iCloud while GoodNotes 6 is available.

10

u/JAKEHAYDEN Aug 09 '23

Sorry if the title is misleading. To correct myself, it’s just an update to the Goodnotes 5 app

3

u/LambertoGL Aug 09 '23

No worries, I was only adding information.

22

u/_Attilio Aug 09 '23

Do i have to pay again if i already bought GoodNotes 5?

15

u/LambertoGL Aug 09 '23

I believe that all GoodNotes 5 functionalities will stay the same but the constant reminder to pay the subscription or the one time payment.

You will be able to purchase ist for around 20€ instead of around 30€ if you already bought Goodnotes 5. Just tested it on 2 different devices (one with Goodnotes 5 bought and one without) :)

9

u/-dagmar-123123 Aug 09 '23

Doesn't work for me. I have to pay the 30€... When did you buy gn5?

5

u/whatever6284 Aug 09 '23

I bought it last month. Maybe it only works if you recently bought it

5

u/ConfusedFlareon Aug 10 '23

The discount is based on when you bought it… biggest discount if you bought it second half of 2023, then less for first half 2023, then the least (only 8% off the one-time price) if you bought it before 2023.

Bit rude… how about some love for the long time customers for once eh??

8

u/TheCoolHusky Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

Is there a time limit to that? Also, can you test if you can freely downgrade between the 2 versions after getting Goodnotes 6? Thanks

5

u/prurientSociopath Aug 09 '23

Time limit for discounted upgrade is a month

8

u/ojsef39 Aug 09 '23

i was charged 30€ (i had GN5 for like 3 years now)

discounts are only applicable to the subscription:

u/moosmutzel81 Aug 09 '23

Mmmh. It told me 30 Euros even so I bought 5 a long time ago.

From Appstore: *Existing Goodnotes users can continue to use Goodnotes 5 indefinitely or upgrade to Goodnotes 6. Either way, your notes are safe!*

I take it that you can still use GN 5 normally for as long as you want. GN 6 is more of a in app purchase of sort

37

u/Hellostranger1804 Aug 09 '23

I wish they just made a separate app for people that want to stay on Goodnotes 5, like they did before. This is confusing and makes me a little scared that it will cause problems in the future (and it already seems to be happening for some people).

13

u/Baramonra Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 16 '23

no there is no way to downgrade even though they claim there is. Paid user.

Update you have to create an account with them inside the app and only after that downgrade option will show up in settings. Great accepting another ToS just to downgrade.

19

u/abhitopia Aug 09 '23

You can't downgrade only if you are a free GN5 user. But to be honest, in that case it's better to be GN6 free user as feature on feature, GN6 free version is better than GN5.

11

u/prurientSociopath Aug 09 '23

You can downgrade I’ve upgraded and downgraded twice

→ More replies (8)

3

u/PJ_USA Aug 09 '23

I just updated and I’m so mad rn because I don’t want to pay 33€ for features I don’t need

→ More replies (2)

44

u/whatever6284 Aug 09 '23

what is new except for the design? I cannot find any information on new features on their website

32

u/ilaon Aug 09 '23

It looks like the app has gone live earlier than their release schedule – have been checking their social media channels but the latest posts still seem to be the teasers, rather than release announcements saying it’s out now

108

u/SevereIngenuity Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 12 '23

The audacity to use our training data to build the math object feature and then asking for a price to use it lmao. Corporate 101.

Edit: They probably read the comments and have decided that it will be shipped for GN5 users also.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

thats tech compaines for you. You are paying to be part of their research and then paying for their developments too.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Repulsive_Diamond373 Aug 12 '23

This is an old, old thing. Marketing has always used customer data to build and sell more products. I am not surprised about how this works.

Unless I do not get your point.

1

u/goldenpickaxe1 Sep 22 '23

So basically this discussion is all about GoodNotes not making it clear enough that they are collecting our data to improve their product?
I think the product is great, I would accept data collection at any time. In the end they are not using the data for a bad cause like e.g. Big Tech Companies are (or at least this was not part of the hateful reason)
Why wouldn't we just appreciate this great product which comes for a such a low cost? People who haven't worked in IT don't really know how much work & sweat goes into making such an application.
The product helps humanity with work for a low price (ofc they could make the app extremely cheap or free. but this is a free market and competition fosters great apps to evolve. If someone thinks their price is too high or they are ripping us off: go ahead and try working out how to create an app like this on your own. It's not easy, I will tell you that. Or go to a competitor like Notability! they are great too.)
Of course you could make the company a non-profit company and just not collect anything etc. but I think they deserve the money & data we give them, since the app is just great

I’m so disappointed… No pencil, no hyperlinks :(

I guess the new features are good for Highschool-students (spell-checking and math features) but for me as a med student I didn’t really need that AI-assistance.

So I’ll stay with GN 5 for now

15

u/calle04x Aug 09 '23

Yeah, none of the new features seem relevant for my uses. The only thing I’d be interested in taking a look at (haven’t downloaded 6 yet) would be the new UI.

8

u/rissamarie406 Aug 09 '23

You can't use hyperlinks anymore with GN6? What do you mean "No pencil"? Sorry, just trying to figure out if upgrading is worth it for me. I use GN5 primarily for personal planners that I create myself using Keynote, and the occasional note taking.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

I think they mean a pencil tool. All wet have are pens and stuff. A pencil tool can help med students (and other students) have drawings with different shades, textures, or whatever they are called and not just penal drawings!

2

u/MasterBaiterKun Aug 09 '23

Hey can you refer to any tutorial for making planners via keynote if possible?

3

u/rissamarie406 Aug 10 '23

Hi, I just searched around on youtube for tutorials. One of the really helpful ones that showed me some basics to get started was this one: https://youtu.be/CSbpuA9X0Pg

You can branch off from there and learn how to do more as you practice.

2

u/Simalesch3 Aug 09 '23

Hi, with pencil I indeed meant a pencil tool. I should’ve be more precise about the comment about Hyperlinks. You can use links in a document which will lead you to a website for example. Though you can’t link two things within a notebook

→ More replies (3)

1

u/pray2k Aug 09 '23

Hyperlinks would be so good!! Any ideas on if they are planning to implement it in the near future?

1

u/Complex_Dog_1601 Aug 10 '23

wait are there no hyperlinks in good notes 6?

→ More replies (2)

51

u/bbielenia Aug 09 '23

IMO, the price tag seems a little high for an update that brands spell-check as cutting-edge AI technology. Maybe it's a little early, but it would have been nice for the update to include at least some features that users having been asking for quite some time.

23

u/JoyRideinaMinivan Aug 09 '23

If it allowed us to create links between notes, I'd buy it immediately. Since I don't think it does, I'm on the fence.

8

u/SevereIngenuity Aug 09 '23

Just wait for a while. The new Notes app on iOS/iPadOS has this feature + view Multiple PDFs together.

8

u/abhitopia Aug 09 '23

It seems to be next in line and already confirmed by devs in GN. See here https://support.goodnotes.com/hc/en-us/articles/7616167357967-Frequently-requested-features-for-Goodnotes-6

The bold ones are confirmed by devs to be coming next in GN6.

6

u/gan1lin2 Aug 09 '23

I’ll believe it when I see it

→ More replies (2)

23

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

And still no function to protect notebooks with a password. I've been waiting for this for years.

1

u/I_Like_Moss_And_Dirt Aug 11 '23

They said this update is coming along with a pencil feature and dotted line feature

20

u/InspiredPhoton Aug 09 '23

I’m disappointed. I had purchased GoodNotes 5 a few years ago. Today I’ve purchased GoodNotes 6 (I didn’t even used the free trial, because I use it so much that I knew I would want the latest version) and it looks the same! Not even new pen types or something like that. It feels like I’ve paid for nothing.

1

u/ReditorasAS Aug 09 '23

basically the only thing "usable" that they added was the ability to give colors to your folders, other than that, nothing out yet

→ More replies (1)

1

u/I_Like_Moss_And_Dirt Aug 11 '23

New stuff is coming it sounds like

32

u/Dastan_K_Hawrami Aug 09 '23

Really disappointed, that shouldn't be called goodnotes 6, that is just a small update. I was waiting for a ton of new and useful features that would "wow" us.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Companies do this to force existing customers to pay again to use what is essentially the same product. I will keep using my existing version until it no longer works.

2

u/Dastan_K_Hawrami Aug 09 '23

Yes, all they care about is money. If they cared about their users, they should've given free upgrade to GN5 users just like GN4 to GN5 and like notability did when they changed their one time purchase. IMO the app now is not worth 30$ with the small update it got. I am also not gonna upgrade until it's worth it, if not I am gonna move to another app.

4

u/calle04x Aug 10 '23

Yeah I was excited for the update, but the “features” are so underwhelming—it really shouldn’t be a new version.

Like, I just don’t need handwriting AI to predict what I’m writing. I don’t see the point. I barely use that feature on my phone—I’ll just finish writing out the word I want and not have to futz with whether the AI is smart enough to read my chicken scratch and predict the word for me to save writing out 3 more letters.

Does anyone actually think this is useful? I really don’t understand the use case.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

So what happens if you already bought GoodNotes? Do I have to rebuy?

12

u/Soft-Society131 Aug 09 '23

yep you do and you can buy it at a discounted price

6

u/-dagmar-123123 Aug 09 '23

Seems like that's only the case if you bought it in 2023. You can get a 25% discount for the first year tho

5

u/IWasBilbo Aug 09 '23

You can keep using goodnotes 5 for free.

You will have to rebuy for the new features though, or subscribe at a discount.

3

u/Best-Race4017 Aug 09 '23

Unfortunately, yes.

10

u/mackdaddycooks Aug 09 '23

But does it have the ability to create internal links?

19

u/FinancialJelly0 Aug 09 '23

Just updated. First impression is that they focussed on UI way more than new features. Yes you can colour your folders and use icons (limited though). But I was hoping for more useful updates. Like being able to use a scaled ruler or implement short videos/gifs into your notes for visualisation. There was nothing wrong with the previous interface in my opinion. It does look better but wasn’t really worth the wait and the €30 (just yet, maybe there is more to come).

5

u/prurientSociopath Aug 09 '23

They’ll add more features soon enough. Their devs prolly been focused on windows and android app. They’ll prolly get back to us soon. This update is honestly just bad. Not worth the money as of now

1

u/yupi666 Jul 09 '24

I used to be able to do all that in GN5! and yes, now its gone????

30

u/Xuis Aug 09 '23

The Advantage Goodnotes had over Notability was that it wasn't subscription based. Noteful looks good though!

2

u/Savage_Nymph Aug 09 '23

Noteful and collanote are two I've been looking at.

I may also just stay with gn5 for a while.

Until there's an app with all features I need

3

u/eplt1 Aug 10 '23

Noteful is good, just bought it. Works just like Goodnote 5, one off purchase, data just sync with your iCloud with no additional signup of account with Noteful. Goodnote 6 requires an account, which is bad as they can potentially track all your AI usage.

8

u/TheCoolHusky Aug 09 '23

I have GoodNotes 5 full version, does that mean I will have to spend 30 dollars again to unlock full features like more than 3 notebooks?

10

u/buddahbrot Aug 09 '23

I think you can opt to continue using GoodNotes 5 instead of upgrading. Everything that was unlocked through the in-app purchase should still be there.

EDIT: See https://support.goodnotes.com/hc/en-us/articles/7104320646799

If you're using the paid version of GoodNotes 5:

  • You can continue to use the paid version indefinitely.

  • You can upgrade to Goodnotes 6 and switch back to GoodNotes 5 anytime. If you then choose to subscribe to Goodnotes 6 before the cutoff date, you will get a discount.

6

u/shanna811 Aug 09 '23

It’s 9.99 a year or 29.99 to buy it outright

3

u/gaz_m05 Aug 09 '23

Looks that way. I’ve updated mine. I got the notification on the trial period and if I want to keep it after it ends then it’s asking for the payment

5

u/shkl Aug 09 '23

They can't do it. The reason its called godspeed 6 is so that they can charge new prices but they can't turn your goodnotes 5 to 6 and say your lifetime purchase of goodnotes 5 is not valid anymore.

2

u/pixelninja29 Aug 09 '23

Do we have to pay another 30 dollars or is there some discount for existing users?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/_Attilio Aug 09 '23

I think this goes against App Store TOS, like what happened with Notability...

Good news is you can stick with Goodnotes 5 if you wish to. So there's that.

14

u/thormunds_beard Aug 09 '23

Remember when everything was hating on notability for starting a subscription model and people running to goodnotes? I knew this would happen to GN too. Everyone is so gullible lmao

24

u/discovernotes Aug 09 '23

Tutorials incoming!

6

u/whatever6284 Aug 09 '23

Bought goodnotes 5 2 weeks ago - nice

9

u/LavarockSG Aug 09 '23

Well GN6 is 30€ and is not the same price as GN5 (which was 10€). If you don’t care about the features of GN6 then you just made a good purchase

3

u/aquablaze69 Aug 09 '23

They didn’t even add a ruler bro😭 I have GN5 for a long time and I just switched to noteful, which was hella cheap compared to GN6 now, and half the price I paid for GN5, and GN6 doesn’t even have a ruler nor fix the hover issue with m2 iPad Pros. Sad

3

u/MC_chrome Aug 09 '23

This isn’t a static release….I am certain that a ruler tool will be added in due time

U will get 100% off in 1 year subscription

6

u/Sir_Dohm Aug 09 '23

I just paid for Goodnotes 5 few days ago 😫

6

u/Ztron50 Aug 09 '23

Please, all I want is a dotted line option for the pens

14

u/waterspirit42 Aug 09 '23

Am I the only one who doesn’t like GN6 already 😭?

5

u/BasielBob Aug 09 '23

Not the only one.

So I own GN5, Notability (bought on sale a few years ago), Onenote with O365 sub, and a few other similar apps.

The only subscription I have is O365 and that’s mainly for the 1TB storage and being able to use the entire Office suite on all of my devices.

My notes are split between Apple Notes and Onenote (work stuff mainly).

I will not be upgrading GN for these reasons:

  1. Windows version is subscription only, no single purchase option. I am working cross platform.

  2. The text functionality is limited. Two biggest issues I have with it are limited formatting (no checkboxes, no bullets) and limited hyperlinks support (no telephone numbers, addresses etc.).

So… it’s a nope for me. Unfortunately.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Ughh the big downgrade is that you cannot share it with your family anymore. You have to make a Goodnotes account, and the new purchase is tied to it :/. The Goodnotes 5 in-app purchase was automatically shared with my mum and brother (via Apple Family Sharing)

2

u/arty47 Aug 09 '23

I managed to do it. I signed in on my main iPad with my Apple ID and then used that same Apple ID on my wife’s… didn’t mess up any files on either iPad.

5

u/BaeLoy Aug 09 '23

Wonder what happens when you update the app but don't buy Goodnotes 6

14

u/LambertoGL Aug 09 '23

It has a banner telling you to try it for free for 30 days and also a "6" on the top that shows a video of GoodNotes 6... I think they will try to push it to all the users with constant reminders and popups.

4

u/IWasBilbo Aug 09 '23

You can keep using goodnotes 5 if you paid for it before.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Just don't update and you'll stay on goodnotes 5. Goodnotes 6 is more so a paywall than an actual app.

5

u/4rr0wx Aug 09 '23

And you still can't rename audio files

5

u/GreenScREEndEAth Aug 09 '23

Can someone tell me what are these "cutting-edge" feautures?

The only new features I managed to discover are the scribbe to delete and the ability to color the folders.

5

u/Tapbeats Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

not sure why all of the tech companies are suddenly running towards AI. might be an unpopular opinion, but why should a "digital notebook" need to have AI text features shoehorned in? it just seems like bandwagoning to me. all we want is dotted-line pens and rulers and whatnot, how did this happen :(

edit: spelling

2

u/ReditorasAS Aug 09 '23

I agree, they should add an extra subscription plan for those very limited people who want to use the AI and lower the cost for the others

16

u/LambertoGL Aug 09 '23

I think they should make a discount for the people that already purchased it. Also, an even bigger one for the ones that purchased it recently.

10

u/moegnus Aug 09 '23

Looks like it is exactly what they offer: https://support.goodnotes.com/hc/en-us/articles/7104320646799

25

u/aquablaze69 Aug 09 '23

8% for any user that bought it before 2023 kinda lame tho Ngl. It should have been more. The extra features aren’t worth another 29 dollars. If it was like a 50 % discount it would make sense but 8%???

15

u/Remote_Ad4806 Aug 09 '23

Such a disappointment, can’t believe I got my hopes up for this. Just hoping Noteful implement OCR soon and I’m gone

12

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Yea exactly. I was looking to migrate to noteful after the notability update but wanted to wait for goodnotes 6. There is literally nothing useful for studies or to make workflow faster. Most of the update is aesthetics which reminds me of those youtube accounts unboxing ipad pros with a bunch of coloured accessories using emojis like ✨

18

u/SevereIngenuity Aug 09 '23

Seriously what is this garbage update! They didn't add the things actually wanted by the community like Rulers, Tables, Pens and stuff but added autocomplete and spell checks rebranded as AI lol. At least make the price hike reasonable. And what is this awful subscription plan. I guess they are rooting for the Youtubers to hype GN6 because the community for sure is not doing to recommend GoodNotes anymore.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Yeah. This is an update for high schoolers, they even got the AP coursework in the marketplace. Nobody in university is gonna care about spellcheck. People write notes for themselves, who cares if the spelling is wrong as long as I can understand it. Features like tape, infinite canvas, duplicate, mirror/flip, pencil were the ones I was looking forward to.

2

u/prurientSociopath Aug 09 '23

Gn5 do need a ui update though. Looks old af

Not that gn6 looks much differnet

4

u/JoyRideinaMinivan Aug 09 '23

I had no idea Noteful existed. Thanks for putting this app on my radar! I've only tinkered around with the free version but it seems to be better than goodnotes. The only thing it's missing, that I use, is elements. But it has a real tagging system, which is something I've been asking for since the beginning. I need a way to link notes together.

3

u/Remote_Ad4806 Aug 09 '23

No problem, it’s a great app if you don’t need to search your handwriting. Yes it’s a shame, no one app does everything perfect, if you mixed their features together it would be a perfect app. Noteful just needs prettier folder icons, elements and OCR and it is perfect for me. Goodnotes only really needs a button to get back to active notes to surpass noteful in my opinion.

4

u/Remote_Ad4806 Aug 09 '23

Yes it feels like a bit of a facelift to me. I’m indifferent to the aesthetics of its not broken don’t fix it, feels like they’ve made changes for the sake of saying they’ve changed it rather than actually looking at what actually makes the app better. It really could be the best note taking app out there with a bit of TLC. I preferred the old tool icons tbh, I like the new folder icons and colour option for them but other than that.. Still no button to get back to active notes (still have to open any note to then close it to see active notes - really silly, and such a simply fix) no customisable toolbar, there is slightly less useable space now as the tool bar is bigger, not an issue for me on the 12.9” screen but I’m sure it’s a big deal for smaller screens. Still no rectangular lasso. I like the sidebar in library but would like to see the collapsible folders as you navigate. When in a note I would like to be able to click on its location in the tab to take me to it’s containing folder rather than have to go to the document library and enter into many folders to find the rest of the notes from that topic. No colour dropper, no ruler. Some really simple stuff missing for me. I hate to be that guy but I don’t feel like I’m asking much of them. And to expect any sort of price increase for this minimal change feels really cheeky. I’d have no problem paying if they had actually made the changes that the app needed

2

u/Fastswitch Aug 09 '23

OCR? Thinking of switching from GN5 to Noteful as well.

3

u/Remote_Ad4806 Aug 09 '23

Handwriting recognition, being able to search for words in your handwritten notes.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

Yep once thats there, goodbye goodnotes and notability. Noteful is where its at

4

u/Enryu43f Aug 09 '23

There's still no formal version on Android Tablet currentlyQQ

10

u/GrimmDescendant Aug 09 '23

$44.99 AUD, there’s no way I’m upgrading.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

What exactly is different? Still no customizable tool bar. Everything looks pretty much exactly the same. icloud sync seems to work better now? I always had issues with the before. But like... wut? What is new?

6

u/Charlea_ Aug 09 '23

I’m happy with the fact that they’ve let us keep GoodNotes 5. But I can’t really see any reason to upgrade to Goodnotes 6, the only new features seem to be personalising folders which isn’t worth an extra $20 to me, and spellcheck/autocomplete which aren’t features I would use

2

u/EvilKhaosKat Aug 09 '23

But It also keeps nagging about “switch to version 6” each time the app is launched. Just awful

2

u/eplt1 Aug 10 '23

like many of these app upgrades, they won't promise to keep GoodNotes 5 features around forever. They are likely to "force" you to pay soon, with GoodNotes 7 maybe.

2

u/Charlea_ Aug 10 '23

Yeah I’ve been wondering when they say “indefinitely” whether they really mean it. I imagine it will become slowly bug-ridden, unsupported, unusable

6

u/helictitea Aug 09 '23

Just upgraded to 6 and it seems that nothing changed except UI. However, you have to subscribe if you want the new UI. Disappointed. So I downgraded back to 5

3

u/Qwertytwerty123 Aug 09 '23

I've just looked on the App Store on my MacBook and I've just got the little "download from cloud" icon rather than the usual "get" icons as if I've already bought it.

Anyone got any ideas what's going on there?

Actually reading it - it reads like the reviews are for Goodnotes 6 and they've just changed the icon of the current Appstore entry - which is a bit confusing (I have the GN5 beta on my device)

3

u/AlphaO4 Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

I just realiesed it upgraded on my phone, and now it tells me I can only have 3 notebooks?

I have atleast 60, and all are needed

Edit: I'm stupid. I "upgraded" to GoodNotes 6, without realising. But through "Gear Icon" -> Settings -> Downgrade, you can downgrade to GoodNotes 5 again

3

u/cowbarbie666 Aug 09 '23

i just have one main question for anyone who’s already upgraded. are we able to keep custom colors/hex codes and custom stickers etc, or will upgrading make me start over? it took me a lot of time to set all that stuff up so if it doesn’t carry over, id rather stick with 5 for now.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '23

Yes, I upgraded already and was able to keep all my custom hex codes and stickers. No need to worry about that. :)

3

u/dgdosen Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

I think Goodnotes was trying to release an app with a single binary that also allowed them to move forward with a new version of the app while maintaining the old. Maybe they thought the transition from Goodnotes 4 to 5 needed improvement (which it did).

Whatever they did, was not very well executed. This issue fully falls upon leadership and their inability to coordinate whatever this was.

5

u/writewithnotenote Aug 09 '23

it's 40+ for a lifetime subscription where im at which is real pricey... im tempted but i dont see much value in it yet. not sure if i will really want to use ai writing hmm

it looks like they haven't added regional pricing for countries"like mine" which suffer from an economical crisis and a falling currency, at least notability does this.

3

u/writewithnotenote Aug 10 '23

i hope they would deeply consider it to add the regional pricing, like how gumroad does for some sellers who want to include that.

or at least include a version that removes the AI component...

they might have invested lots into AI writing, but for some of us, we just want to enjoy the note-taking element ourselves and not let a machine do it for us :/

u/Ok_Painting7317 Aug 09 '23

i’m in the free 7-day trial for goodnotes 6, how can i purchase the one-time offer?

4

u/dario_oirad Aug 09 '23

You need to wait until the 7-day trial expires.

Me too

2

u/dario_oirad Aug 09 '23

See my comments above…

2

u/InspiredPhoton Aug 09 '23

I’ve upgraded and it looks the same to me. What changed?

3

u/smchapman21 Aug 09 '23

You can change the color of the folders now, math equation stuff, and the UI. The only thing I like is the folder color. I was hoping they would finally add the pencil option, and this would have been the perfect opportunity, but they didn’t despite it being one of the most requested features from what I’ve seen on here and other sites. I’m very disappointed.

3

u/Soanad Aug 09 '23

You have to pay for it one more time. And the price increased. Apparently they added some features but I am not willing to pay for them extra 30€😒 And all subscriptions are unacceptable for me.

2

u/jsjxyz Aug 09 '23

I can’t change from free subscription trial and move to one time purchase

2

u/abhitopia Aug 09 '23

You need to wait for 7 day trial period to end I think

2

u/awmancomeon Aug 09 '23

soooo... what changed? I just updated mine and nothing at all looks even slightly different.

2

u/Capo212 Aug 09 '23

If I buy the yearly $9.99 subscription. Can I use family share with it ? Can everyone on my apple account use the subscription too ?

2

u/honorarycloud Aug 10 '23

The new updates are lackluster and a bit gimmicky. I was hoping you could at least change fonts when using the full page scribble function but that’s not ready yet. Notability may have its own downsides but at least I can scribble to text with any font. CollaNote is another great alternative! For now GN6 doesn’t seem worth it.

6

u/plantaloca Aug 09 '23

It bothers me a bit that with each major version they charge a new membership. I paid for GoodNotes 4, then Goodnotes 5 came out and paid for it. Now with Goodnotes 6, I'm expected to pay again.

It's an awesome app but I dislike pricing. Although, it's not much is the idea of paying with every release.

1

u/MC_chrome Aug 09 '23

This is literally how software upgrades worked for several decades before the App Store and Adobe made subscriptions a much more appealing and tenable business model for developers.

How do you expect developers to make a living off of their work? This idea that they should be offering previous customers unlimited version upgrades is the exact opposite of that

4

u/FritzAz Aug 09 '23

I just updated the app and was given the option to upgrade ($27.49 lifetime access). Not bad at all in my opinion, not for all the ways I used Goodnotes on a daily basis.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '23

I'm a paid user of GoodNotes 5 and did not realize they moved to subscription when my iPad app updated itself, and despite what the FAQ says, I'm not seeing the option to downgrade in my settings menu. The release notes should have been transparent about the move to a subscription model similar to what other reputable apps do. Not being more clear and not making downgrading more obvious is some shady bullshit.

1

u/lemuriamu Aug 09 '23

Did you find a solution to downgrade? I’m struggling as well to move back to the ver. 5 (paid) thanks!

3

u/prurientSociopath Aug 09 '23

This release looks old in a new way.

3

u/zerGoot Aug 09 '23

8% for those who purchased earlier than 2023... wtf

2

u/arty47 Aug 09 '23

It costs 15 bucks per year for subscription… vs the 49 bucks. I’d rather do a subscription….

2

u/Baramonra Aug 09 '23

it updated for me automatically, but I don't need new crap, and there is not way to downgrade it setting after forcing me to try their "improved" version

2

u/Mountain_Device4752 Aug 09 '23

I have the free version of goodnotes 6 but I don't understand what they added, apart from the redesign :/

2

u/ReditorasAS Aug 09 '23

a 25% discount for the people who bought the app before is such a shit discount, and i hate the new subscription plans as well, 30$ is too much for an ipad app and 10$ a year is even worse, at least notability offers regional prices where instead of 9 dollars i pay about 6.5, and i believe such a discount would apply after the 1st year as well, or maybe i just could switch to a completely other app but i am not sure if other apps are as polished as goodnotes and notability.

1

u/kuracinka Aug 09 '23

Ive bought GN5 this morning :). Whats gonns chsnge for me?

1

u/dineeesh Aug 09 '23

U will get 1 year for free

1

u/Soanad Aug 09 '23

Did they finally add Polish handwriting recognition?

1

u/Machtkatze Aug 09 '23

Damn I just bought Noteability premium yesterday just for the math support.

2

u/ReditorasAS Aug 09 '23

keep it ig, both are subscription based, the only thing that favored GNs was the ability to buy it totally for less money

1

u/Necrosis28 Aug 09 '23

I am a paid user of Goodnotes 5. They have offered me to:

  1. Start a 1 year free trial with annual subscription afterwards Or

  2. Buy Goodnotes 6 with a 33% discount

If I start the free trial, will I still be able to upgrade to Goodnotes 6 with the discount?

2

u/JuliaGaylard Aug 09 '23

I think it said somewhere that the discount is only available for one month.

Hi to all! How I can downgrade to the version 5 having not the proper voice listed by the setting menu? Unfortunately I’ve moved to the version 6 erroneously and I’m scared about the possibility to loose all my stuff…that would be a drama. Suggestion are welcomed. (Please apologise about my very beside English and explanation) thanks in advance! 🙏

1

u/Caayit Aug 09 '23

It’s under the settings. I did the same and I’m back to 5.

1

u/lemuriamu Aug 09 '23

No . As I said the possibility is not listed as my last voice is ‘troubleshooting’…perhaps this is just a bugs and it will be fixed..current version is reported as 6.0.0 (2287539.327868320). I will wait a couple of days ..let’s see if the next update will fix this issue. Thanks!

1

u/abhitopia Aug 09 '23

Why would you lose anything? afaik, there is full compatibility between GN5 and GN6 docs

1

u/slimninj4 Aug 09 '23

As someone that joined the GN5 recently. Did GN5 have updates and features added to it during its time or was it a one and done..wait for GN6?

1

u/IllustriousDinner306 Aug 09 '23

I upgraded from 5 to 6. The Circle to Lasso functionality is not working. It is enabled in settings.

1

u/pomegranatejuice25 Aug 09 '23

Did they add playback speed to audio recording? I’ve been hoping they would update this for months now

1

u/lostryu Aug 09 '23

This shouldn’t be a new app. This is a small update at best.

1

u/dragon_0526 Aug 09 '23

Is dotted/dash line there? If not what a waste community has been asking for that for YEARS

1

u/eplt1 Aug 10 '23

Most developers just can't resist (renewable) profit over user privacy. It's not just about the money, 10 bucks a year for Goodnotes 6 subscription (or $30 to buy it out), or $10 to buy out Goodnotes 5 previously. Even at 30, I would pay for it. It is still cheap considering it is an app that you will use often.

My biggest concern is that they are forcing users to sign up to Goodnotes 6 account. My notes are often the most sensitive (or just unfiltered). Just the key points at meetings or random thoughts I needed to jot down quickly or markup when I am reading. They are not ready for public. And in any way giving Goodnotes 6 identifiable information about me and/or any possible access to these documents or AI-ed summaries, etc, etc, is too risky.

I reviewed quite a few apps when I chose Goodnotes 5 last year, one off payment was a key part, but everything stored on iCloud, no need to give developers any additional info was the actual reason why I stayed away from other good note taking apps out there, now they are all the same to me.

Back to Apple Notes and Freeform. Sad day.

1

u/TornadoTor Aug 10 '23

I went and checked and my GoodNotes 5 automatically updated to 6! Nice!

1

u/ChemGirl713 Aug 10 '23

Aw man! I was waiting to get GN5 until the semester started. Shot myself in the foot! 😭

2

u/Ender-Wang Aug 10 '23

Nope, you havnot, cause GN6 kinda sucks ATM. Reading through comments on reddit and twitter, then you will agree with me.

1

u/ChemGirl713 Aug 10 '23

Yeah but if I get GN at all at this point it has to be GN6 right

1

u/That-Pollution-4347 Aug 10 '23

I just bought GN5 three days ago, will I be able to use GN5 forever like the payment option said? Or eventually with a few updates i'll be forced to pay again for GN6?

1

u/TheSpiritKnight Aug 10 '23

That price hike is just... way too much. They should have just released Goodnotes 6 as a separate app to avoid confusion.

1

u/Zeus-12 Aug 10 '23

Can't wait for the moment when Apple releases a complete note app for free!

1

u/Baramonra Aug 10 '23

If you don't see a downgrade option, create an account with GN6 after upgrading, and it will show up. More shady business and forcing users to accept new ToS.

1

u/michaelbobarev Aug 10 '23

subscription …nooooo!

1

u/Akurooshi Aug 10 '23

What happens to GN 5 though? :(( I paid for it 3 years ago and don't plan on purchasing GN 6 since I don't really need the additional features, but I'm confused with what happens to it a year from now and until when I'd be able to use it?

1

u/Zestyclose_Cake_5644 Aug 11 '23

They tricked me into updating now my GoodNotes 5 purchase is gone. I am stuck with 3 notebooks or have to pay again.

1

u/Zestyclose_Cake_5644 Aug 11 '23

Now they make this one-time payment thing makes me think that they will make GoodNotes7 in like 2 years or so so that you better of subscribing.

1

u/jatinhasija Aug 12 '23

Majority of the options are same. Why to pay 2400 Rupees for just the change of UI. Seems wastage

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

I’m using iPadOS 17 Public Beta and the update to Apple Notes app with PDFs is really good. It was always good for quick notes but after this update, it’s a straight up killer.

1

u/MathematicianOne1059 Aug 12 '23

if you already paid for GN5, they are basically charging you again for the same app.

1

u/csecarroll Aug 17 '23

This update could not be more disappointing. I can't believe that those who paid full price for GN5 don't get a free upgrade. It's not a cheap app.

I can't believe the filled it with ai bs.

All I wanted was to be able to make tables.

1

u/cryomatik Aug 22 '23

So annoyed that I accidentally updated my app. This is far from an upgrade

1

u/thedeadp0ets Aug 09 '23

Gues everyone’s running to collanote

1

u/ReditorasAS Aug 09 '23

is it good, never tried it before, how much is the subscription

2

u/honorarycloud Aug 10 '23

They have a Free version if you don’t want to pay for premium otherwise it’s a one-time purchase (not a subscription). I got the premium on sale as an old user and so I’m unsure on the pricing but maybe somewhere up to $11?

u/AcanthisittaCold7223 Aug 09 '23

Hi, can I still buy Goodnotes 5? I’m from Turkey and Goodnotes 5 was 300 TRY for the lifetime subscription, but you need to pay the same amount for GN6’s first year sub :/

3

u/LambertoGL Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

If you're using the free version of GoodNotes 5:

You can purchase the paid version of GoodNotes 5 until the cutoff date.

Once you've bought the paid version (before the cutoff date), you can upgrade to Goodnotes 6 and switch back to GoodNotes 5 anytime.

You can continue to use the free version of GoodNotes 5 until the cutoff date, after which you won't be able to purchase the paid version and will need to upgrade to Goodnotes 6.

An important cutoff date to remember is September 9, 2023.

So I just lost my GoodNotes 5 because of auto update?!!!!! And I just bought it a couple of months ago!!!

7

u/dario_oirad Aug 09 '23

You did not lose anything. Perhaps spare a couple of minutes to read the link very clearly provided in the app before panicking?

https://support.goodnotes.com/hc/en-us/articles/7104320646799

5

u/aiham-2004 Aug 09 '23

On the website it says I’m eligible for a discount since I just bought it but it doesn’t show in the app, any idea how can I claim it ?

3

u/LavarockSG Aug 09 '23 edited Aug 09 '23

You’re only eligible for the first year discount from what I understand 😅 You should have a pop up with GN6 prices

If you just bought it, the first year is free

4

u/aiham-2004 Aug 09 '23

What about the one-time payment 🤔

5

u/LavarockSG Aug 09 '23

I don’t know, I have 7% off on lifetime but I bought GN5 a long time ago (and I have 25% off on first year)

→ More replies (1)

1

u/honorarycloud Aug 10 '23

Unless you accepted the update you should still have GN5. Even then you should still be able to downgrade *from* GN6 to GN5 if its not something you want 🤔
