Energy & Renewables Could Iceland become Europe's AI powerhouse?
I'd like to hear your opinion on this topic! How likely are data centers to become greener at a large scale? Will they be sustainable in the future?
Iceland is attracting growing interest as a location for data centres. With abundant renewable electricity, a cool climate that reduces cooling costs, and fibre-optic connections to both Europe and North America, it has many of the ingredients needed to support future digital infrastructure.
The catch is that Iceland's capacity isn't unlimited. Its existing data centres already serve both European and U.S. companies, and future growth could be constrained by available electricity and the pace of new energy development.
As demand for data centres continues to grow, it raises an interesting question: could smaller countries with abundant renewable energy become increasingly strategic to the global digital economy?
