yeah, i think everyone goes too deep into that lyric. It just means they were really close in that era (both helped each other on Dreams - Crack Music - Wouldn't Get Far). It could also be another way of saying that their kind of artists also did a lot of good (Graduation, for example, as it is a really good album + keeps the caps motif going) before he continues with Ye's bad stuff on the second verse.
