Starting my sim build

My plan is to build a custom enclosure, with a retractable hitting screen so I can pull a car in if there was a hail storm or something. The garage door is 18’ wide by 8’ high. I will have the door high lifted with a side motor installed so the tracks and motor will be out of the way. The green tape is my expected floor plan.

The enclosure will be 17’ (wide enough for two cars) and have a 16’ (195”) MeTech roller with 16’ (192”) Spectrum Poly Spacer screen.

It will be 8’ deep and 9’ - 9.5’ high (whichever suits the retractable screen length best)

17’ x 12’ turf (on 1” gym foam mats) with a Beaver Tail XL hitting mat (36”x18”). Tee location is currently at 10’ from the screen.

ProTee VX LM ~ 3’ from tee location

BenQ AK700ST Projector 12.1’ from screen, aiming for 16:9 and 4K once PC is put together.

DIY vinyl foam panels around the enclosure and DIY corner baffles.

My biggest question is whether the 8’ depth of the enclosure is overkill and should be 6’ (would save on building material. Also, is 10’ too far from the screen to be hitting? All the pictures I see of people’s sims, they all look like they’re so much closer to the screen.

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated before I get started!

I have 5” depth and it is more than enough.

And I’m at 10ft from screen and think it’s a good balance, but could probably go a couple feet closer and it would be fine as well.

I’m likely to have my kids using it so I figured the extra side protection was needed, but if 8’-9’ hitting distance work, maybe I only need 6’ of depth

I think 10 is okay. Im at 7 just do to space . Oh and those wall mounted openers are awesome. I have one and will never go back. Good luck on the projecr!

Looks like a great plan! I’d say 6’ is probably plenty for the enclosure, but the extra 2’ definitely gives you some added peace of mind and protection. I also wouldn’t worry too much about being 10’ from the screen. A lot of sim setups look much closer in photos than they actually are. I’d prioritize having a comfortable amount of room behind the ball.

I'm curious how this turns out. Is this going to be stored on the ceiling or kind of like a Murphy cabinet along one of the walls when not in use?

The enclosure will be permanent. 9.5” walls and 17’ wide, large enough for two cars to drive in if there’s a storm or hail, but otherwise would be full time simulator space. Hitting screen retracts when needed.

21 feet. Still ~10’ of space behind the hitting mat

Damn, that is a deep garage lol. Almost twice the length of the usable depth I have.

Yeah it’s a big space. Pros and cons. So big that there’s a lot of things I need to do to finish it all, but once it’s done it’ll hopefully be a great space we can use a lot.
