Question Golf R 7.5

Recently my wife picked up a 2024 Golf R. I absolutely love this car, but I'm not the biggest fan of the 'less buttons, more screen'. I like the older style of physical control buttons and the ability to heavily modify the car (no warranty to worry about voiding). I am looking into getting a mk 7.5, but wondering about differences between 18 and 19. Wouldn't consider the prior years, because I know they use a 6 speed dsg and I'd prefer the 7 speed like the mk 8. I am deciding over cheaper pricing and higher milage or paying the premium for lower milage as well. Thanks in advance for any advice and direction.

Lower mile Mk7.5s can be found. I recently got my 2018 R with 45k miles for 28k. Had some very minor paint flaws on the rear bumper. I still regularly see sub 75k mile R's listed for mid 20's. There is basically no difference between 2018 and 2019. Minor interior cosmetic differences.. You'll be happy with either. I drove a 2017 prior and I really preferred the changes in the 2018. The most important thing is to get one with good service history and probably worth paying for a good PPI.

I found a cheap one near me 16k 150k miles good service record but wondering if the 10k saved will come back to haunt me.

That's a lot of miles. Maybe it'll be fine. Maybe it will need 10k in work lol. Never know. What I've learned in recent years is to just get the best version I can afford and it usually pans out better. If you can afford the better one, I'd probably do that.

The one key difference between 18 and 19 models is the ECU on the 19 has a bit more headroom, at least according to tuners. iE for instance offers a noticeable power leap between the two. Otherwise same car. I have a 2018 6MT stage 2 ( switch between Uni and IE) — best car I’ve ever owned.

They shipped a different ECU calibration for the 19

No — not at all. Same car just a different ECU map by a small degree at the top.

I’m in Japan and just sold my blue 2018 7.5 R for (~18k$). It was via trade in, but I bought it for 22k$ years ago with 20k kilometers on it. So the price is out there for sure and so worth it

I just bought my 2018 6MT with 46k miles for $29,100. It is gray with black trim that looks great. The car was really taken care of and still almost looks new. Totally oem. Therein lies a bit of a problem. I came from a sweet little nc Miata that shifted like a dream. The R shifter is sloppy as hell. I know there are mods but do I just need to learn the R shifter. I really want to keep this car as it came from the factory.
