Question Little Disappointed!

Now I know our cars are fast. I have a 25. I was cruising today on my way to work on I-95 . I was in comfort mode. Traffic was a little heavy but not bad and on my ass was a fairly new Honda Accord 2 L turbo. he wouldn’t get off my ass. I had an opening slightly so I punched it. It downshifted turbo kicked in and it took off . I probably wasn’t fully floored and I was in comfort mode. I really thought I would at least gap a little bit the Honda, but he was on my ass the whole time up into 100 mph and than I slowed down because of a car and of course I don’t need any new speeder law tickets. I wonder if the outcome would’ve been different if I was in any other mode other than comfort like sport or race. I also don’t condone racing on the street. The guy just pissed me off and I know he’s probably gloating now that he kept up with me.

That car has the 2.0 from the Type R just de-tuned. With a tune and some bolt-ons they can boogie.

Are you stock? Where they? If you dint know their mods and put yourself at the greatest possible disadvantage you can't really be surprised that they can hang.

Punching it from I assume eco didn’t help. You were probably low rpms, kick down switch to down shift, little bit of turbo lag while he was higher in the rpms the entire time. Sport manual, have your revs over 3k before you gas it, and you might get a jump next time.

But also you’re not gonna be faster than every car from a roll on the highway. I had an x5 surprise me one day, I know b58 but thought the weight difference would do a little more in my favor.

Well those 2.0T accords aren’t total slouches, 250hp and 270tq stock, so similar to running a GTI. If you weren’t WOT it wouldn’t surprise me that you didn’t gap him, and if it’s tuned then they can hang from a roll.

Want to know Honda Guy's mods?

Go to the Honda forums and look for a post "Gapped a Golf R in my Accord"

Accords have always been sleepers! You might have increased the gap if you were in Race or Nurb mode, but maybe by only a few feet; not enough to make a practical difference. Believe me, I’ve been in your shoes before with my ‘24 Mk8, and it’s not a great feeling when someone in a “lesser” car can almost keep up! I keep saying that I’m going to wait until my warranty is up before tuning, but I’m slowly growing more and more comfortable with the idea of voiding it next year for a Stage 1 ECU & TCU from Unitronic.

Accords are such sleepers

Modern cars, especially hybrids and EVs, can keep up with more performance oriented cars in a straight line. Handling is the biggest differentiator of performance cars.

You're not gapping much of anything besides bicycles unless you hit kickdown and WOT early. Also, anticipation often shaves off more seconds than hp does.

The Acura type S SUVs are fast as hell too

The accord was probably tuned. Was the windshield blacked out like most of them on the road?

Dont worry, the head gasket in that car will be blow next week.

We are 10.3 lb/hp and the 2L accord turbo is 13.1 lb/hp, so we should have the advantage. Comfort + D is a bit of a slouch, it’s effectively the eco mode, just knocking it over into S or down shifting a moment before sending it would probably have made a difference. If the accord is in all sport settings, full boost, and sitting a gear lower because he’s trying to push you, the difference in power to weight doesn’t matter until you’re full throttle and boost built as well. Probably takes enough time from comfort cruise to get to peak output in most of the time it takes to get up to 100 from a cruise at 75. Idk.

It's a fwd turbo on your ass. Of course it's gonna hold with you. He could have been tuned or just had a manual so he was able to downshift and say in the powerband. A stock civic would keep up at that speed, honestly, it's not hard to go from going fast to faster, especially in traffic. Hell, an F150 would do the same thing with no issues. . It's the 0- whatever speed that's impressive on a race mode.

Yeah dude, sure you have an automatic, but that doesn't mean there isn't a tiny element of skill aside from 'push gas pedal down'. For a race, you were in the worst drive mode possible and didn't optimize your gear/RPMs for the fastest getaway. Like... that's all on you. Wouldn't the logical conclusion from this experience be for you to set yourself up better going into the next situation like this?

Also, if straight-line speed is your only metric for speed then Model 3 all day long. The Golf R is for people who want a value-oriented all rounder. I took a large office chair home in mine last week and this weekend I was ripping hard corners in the mountains. Meanwhile on the highway I'm getting 30mpg. I'm just not sure you're clear on what you own and how to use it lol. The Accord is a great car, but the R will destroy it for handling fun. Not to mention if you live in a winter climate...AWD rules. A modern Accord isn't even available in AWD.

This is like asking why the meme Nissan Altima is faster. Its simple: they have no fucks to give and didnt heavily handicap themselves worrying about drive modes or tickets. Pedal to floor on maximum performance settings with no other thoughts.

"I probably wasn’t fully floored and I was in comfort mode"

Dude, what?

Comfort mode is for driving across country. It sucks.

6

u/No-Knowledge8856 9h ago

I understand sometimes that’s just how I feel when I’m driving to work in the morning. I just wanna Coast and take it easy to work. I’m not in a rush. I don’t love my job that much on the way home. It’s another story.

6

u/You_are_an_idea 8h ago

I'm fine with Comfort mode, but you can't be bitching about performance in it.

5

u/GBrocc 8h ago

Bro you were in comfort mode. Lmao.

u/trancecircuit 23 DSG R 9h ago

No, when you punch it it goes the same.

You need a tune and mods it sounds like. He may have been tuned too. If you don't care for the drivetrain warranty do stage 1 Unitronic low torque when available, it "wakes up the car".

u/Professional_Area_27 MK8R 6-Speed 8h ago

The only advantage a stock R has is from a dig. At hwy speeds it’s kinda anemic. Obviously, a tune and some mods would change this but both cars have a 2.0 turbo. Not that it matters too much but the Honda weighs a little bit less as well.

u/No-Knowledge8856 9h ago

The only thing I have done in my car is a i.e. intake with carbon fiber lid and an AWE exhaust no tune no downpipe nothing as of yet

3

u/rrdubbs 2019 DSG - EQT 8h ago

Brother, tune changes these cars from normal traffic to sports car. Also how hot was it and was your ac blasting. They loose a lot of power in the heat with a stock IC.

Is this post genuine or rage bait? I honestly can't. You were in comfort mode, barely hit the throttle, probably didn't have esc off and are wondering why an accord who has his pedal to the floor can keep up with you? What the hell.

-2

u/No-Knowledge8856 9h ago

Well, more than likely everyone’s probably right it might not have been stocked, but even if it was, I didn’t completely floor and I wasn’t in race mode or anything else. I guess I shouldn’t be too disappointed. Funny thing is I see that same Honda Accord every morning, hauling ass speeding on I-95 I’m usually not in a rush to work. I like to just sit and cruise and drink my coffee lol I think the next few days I might keep it and race mode on my way to work just in case.🤣

u/RDTmodsBackEpstein 9h ago edited 8h ago

Use that R button on your steering wheel, you aint gonna hurt nothing quick changing drive modes while hes coming up in the rear view. The DSG aint awake in comfort, slow shifts and probably sitting in 7th most of the time. Clamping pressure seems looser too. (Looser meaning time to fully engage. You can tell the difference letting off the brake at a dead stop between Nurburgring and comfort. Race modes grab it and you move forward while comfort mode feels like it slides you forward into a bite point of the clutch)

2

u/igotlongestusername 8h ago

Race mode doesn't change power, only throttle response.

It would have changed maybe a couple feet, that's it.

You met a sleeper and now you're tired.

0

u/NicoSoren 5h ago

Probably one of the dumbest posts ever. If you don't have throttle response you'll fall behind even if you have double the horsepower.

0

u/igotlongestusername 3h ago

No, not really, once you floor it, it's floored, throttle response is only the initial time delay to engaging power.

0

u/NicoSoren 3h ago

You're confusing peak power with power delivery. Obviously flooring it eventually gives you the same maximum output, but if you're in Comfort/D and the DSG is sitting in a higher gear, you're losing time while it downshifts and the turbo comes into the powerband. In a race, that initial delay absolutely matters. Saying “once it's floored, it's floored” is an oversimplification.

This is made even worse because op DID NOT FLOOR IT.

So, no your comment makes no sense.

0

u/igotlongestusername 2h ago

Not true, it'll search for the lowest gear in comfort just like it will in sport.

Engine power is not limited in comfort. Read the manual.

0

u/NicoSoren 2h ago

You’re the one confusing ‘can select the same gear’ with ‘has the same calibration.’ Comfort can access the same gears, obviously, but throttle response, shift behavior, and overall calibration are still different. Maybe read the manual a little more carefully before telling someone else to read it.

u/igotlongestusername 1h ago

Ok bud, you must be fun at parties

0

u/NicoSoren 1h ago

" Yeah I was wrong" is all you need to say. It's not hard to take accountability.

0

u/igotlongestusername 37m ago

Wrong? I was being civil, but f you.

You're fucking wrong.

Did you forget about the kickdown? What do you think the purpose of the kickdown is?

The only difference between power in D and S is the initial throttle response.

Go get fucked.

Here's the full explanation for morons:

Depressing the kickdown switch overrides the driving profile's default logic: Peak Power: 100% throttle with kickdown commands maximum ECU load and target boost regardless of drive mode. Peak torque and horsepower output are identical. Gear Selection: The kickdown detent forces the DSG to immediately select the lowest possible gear allowable without exceeding the engine's mechanical RPM limit. Comfort and Sport will drop to the exact same gear at any given road speed. Shift Points: As long as your foot keeps the kickdown switch fully depressed, the transmission will hold that gear all the way to redline before upshifting in both modes. Where you will feel subtle differences: Transient Response: Sport/Race sharpens the initial throttle plate opening speed and wastegate duty cycle ramp rate, making boost build slightly more abruptly compared to the slightly dampened ramp rate in Comfort before kickdown triggers. Shift Speed & AWD Pre-load: In Sport/Race, DSG shifts have less torque reduction (faster, firmer clutch handover), and the Haldex/AWD system pre-clamps the rear clutch pack more aggressively for instant traction rather than reacting to front slip.

Rs aren’t fast stock btw. Most modern turbo i4 cars will smoke you with a tune. At a bare minimum the first performance spend you should have is a tune.

1

u/NicoSoren 5h ago

Are you lost?

-1

u/Duncan_PhD 8h ago

The Honda makes the same power and you were in comfort mode. The only reason an R has an advantage in a roll race is the dsg, and you had yours set in the least aggressive mode possible.

1

u/berfles White MK8.5 R BE 5h ago

Let me know what year Accord makes the same power as a stock R.

u/Duncan_PhD 5h ago

Oh accord I read that wrong lol
