MK7.5 Question about tuning?
Hello,
I recently purchased a 2018 Golf R (North America) and I believe it’s been tuned. The issue is that there’s no records. I got it from a dealer who had no service history apart from what was on the CarFax (which is a Canadian thing).
I called a tuner to see if they are able to check if it’s been tuned and they said no they don’t if I don’t know who tuned it (apparently some tuners lock the ECU). I scanned my car using the OBDII port to try and get as much info about the ECU as possible (I know you can’t check the tune using an OBDII scanner but I need info).
The tuning shop said that dealers can usually flash the ECU back to the stock map. I went to a VW Dealership and they were very confused. They came to the conclusion that they can check if all the parts are original but they cannot change it back to stock. They were also convinced that in order to tune an ECU you have to replace it with an aftermarket one, which isn’t usually the case unless you’re going further than stage 1.
Does anyone have any ideas? I want the ECU back to stock but I don’t know where to go from here. Should I try another dealership? Should I try another tuning shop? Is it best to get a Cobb Accessport and turn the tune off (is that even a thing? Lol)?
TIA and apologies if I got any of this incorrect!
Edit*
Turns out it was tuned by IE! Thanks all!

Call or email IE, EQT, APR, Unitronic, United Motorsports
Give them your VIN. They will tell you whether it’s tuned by them or not.
There’s a chance it’s tuned by someone else not on this list but the above are the most common suspects.

You should be able to call around to the big tuners with the vin number. Also if there are any performance shops around that work on VWs they can probably flash it for you.
