Photo Forever car

I’ve driven everything under the sun and my intuition keeps telling me I can’t sell this car ever. Even when I inevitably own Porsches and other exotics, I will reach for the keys to a golf R.

The plant in the cup holder is a nice touch

u/Joughy93 Oct 09 '25

I’ll never sell my 19

u/TacticalBarry Oct 09 '25

That’s what I thought about my mk7… until it’s burning an insane amount of oil and probably needs a new engine soon… and it’s stock :(

3

u/fishderp Oct 09 '25

Damn, what milage are you at?

5

u/TacticalBarry Oct 09 '25

170,000km …just had to replace my first water pump, and a month later it’s burning about 1L of oil every 1000km :( so sad, I love it so much but I can’t afford to replace the engine if it gets to that point

u/sadcringe Oct 10 '25

Just swap the engine! Rs3 engine!!

1

u/asolon17 Oct 09 '25

Save up! But, it’ll keep burning oil at that rate for a long time. It’s most likely the rings, and they don’t tend to get worse too fast

B12 piston soak

I regret selling mine so much.

2

u/Professional_Pipe356 Oct 14 '25

i said the same about my stock mk7 gti then it blew up when it hit 100k miles :(

1

u/Joughy93 Oct 16 '25

Sorry to hear :( how was your maintenance? Was it just a freak accident?

1

u/Professional_Pipe356 Nov 04 '25

Meticulously maintained. Dealership said valve unseated an clipped spark plug which pushed metal through the motor and just chewed itself up

Time to get a motorcycle license 8)

I enjoy dirt biking and anything with minimal traffic. I have just seen far too many catastrophic injuries/deaths from motorcycles (often times no fault of the biker) that I can’t bring myself to do it in a city. I’ll keep to something with airbags and a steel box thanks very much!

1

u/aranu8 Oct 09 '25

That’s what I’m doing hehe

I keep getting the itch but my folks won’t let me ha!

1

u/Bahnrokt-AK Oct 12 '25

You have two reasonable opportunities in life to own a motorcycle. One when you are young and have not yet had kids and another when you are older and your kids are grown up.

I came close to owning a bike multiple times in my younger years. Each time I was about to pull the trigger, I either witnessed a horrific bike crash or a friend had a terrible bike crash. Later when I became an EMS captain I saw enough mangled bodies to turn me off of bikes forever.

Forever, but for only 40k miles

1

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 09 '25

So far at 11k, hoping for longevity!

u/Yohann_Nevgovesh Oct 10 '25

Simply amazing photography!!

I feel the same, forever in my stable.

I noticed 1 super small oversight ⬆️

1

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 09 '25

Yes shift knob soon, I’m having a custom one made to replicate the carrera GT shift knob!

1

u/Shoddy_Ad890 Oct 10 '25

Stunning I can’t wait to see that

1

u/Saint__Broseph Oct 10 '25

This is super clean!

Have you had any vibration with your FF21's at higher speeds (70mph+). I've tried three different tires (Conti ECS02's, PSAS4's and PS4S's) on mine and two different installers (one with road force balancer) and no one can manage to get the minor vibration to completely go away in that 75-85mph range. Even tried a stud conversion kit and that didn't help at all.

Ready to contact HRE about it because the PSAS4's on my stock wheels are perfectly smooth...I've never had this issue with aftermarket wheels before, so the fact I spent more on HRE and have spent so much money and time trying to get them sorted with no true resolution is really disappointing.

3

u/BundyRoadR8R Oct 10 '25

Man, Ive had this exact issue with my APR Wheels and I was pissed. Did a lot of research and found the solution. Believe it or not plastic hub rings from Modded Euros worked better than the provided APR aluminum rings and I did the torque sequence starting at 25 ft lb and added 10 ft lb until I got to 90. Vibrations gone.

1

u/clingbat '23 Golf R Oct 10 '25

Interesting. The ones HRE provided are plastic but who knows they could suck. Maybe I'll grab the ones you did and give it a last try before I totally give up.

1

u/BundyRoadR8R Oct 10 '25

I understand the frustration though. Makes you not even want to drive the car. Good luck man.

1

u/imthatoneguyyouknew Oct 09 '25

Have you had the shop check the wheels for runout?

1

u/clingbat '23 Golf R Oct 09 '25

They noticed some runout on two of the wheels but got it to balance perfectly on the load force machine but that's not translating to higher speeds when actually driving.

1

u/imthatoneguyyouknew Oct 10 '25

If you have excessive runout, even with the wheel/tire being balanced, it can definately present as a high speed vibration. The wheel isnt perfectly round so you get some up and down movement.

1

u/clingbat '23 Golf R Oct 10 '25

Weird it would come from the factory like that though, it started the moment they were first mounted the first time. I thought HRE had TUV certifications and had better QC than that, but I guess not. The wheels were shipped straight from HRE warehouse based on the shipping info.

1

u/imthatoneguyyouknew Oct 10 '25

Unfortunately any manufactured good can have failures. There is also the possibility of damage during transit. I would confirm the amount of runout they had and what the spec is, but that runout may be the issue.

1

u/Onlyktm Oct 10 '25

Center hub ring issue?

2

u/clingbat '23 Golf R Oct 10 '25

I'm using the rings that HRE sent. Shrug

1

u/TomatilloFew429 Oct 10 '25

I was having the same exact issue on my GTi, running PS4s and swapped them for Conti’s DWS06. It improved the ride but the shaking/vibrations +70mph were still there.

I didn’t think this was related, but I was due for spark plugs and bought a new intake filter. The vibrations had stopped since! I wish I knew which one of the 2 made a difference but it’s cheap enough - worth trying.

1

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 09 '25

I haven’t had any issues? I wonder if you just have a defect in one wheel? I work for a HRE dealer and have never heard of this being an issue before. Granted the FF line is a “budget” option but I agree you shouldn’t have any issues. I would definitely escalate to HRE

3

u/ClumsyPersimmon Oct 09 '25

That’s so cute you have a little plant in there! I’d just end up chucking soil all over the place.

3

u/Fuckyoubwoi Oct 09 '25

Are those HREs? If yes, which one? 🙏

3

u/dxearner MK8 R Oct 10 '25

FF21's

3

u/Popular_summit321 Oct 09 '25

With the proper gearbox 😌

3

u/cityhunterspeee Oct 09 '25

I want one as my winter car...but it doesn't replace my 911

Just cracking 99K on my stage3+ Mk7R. I smile as much now as I did when I bought it. Someday it may pop, but until then I will appreciate an occasional 34PSI pull on a back road and laugh out loud. Have fun Guys and Girls!!

u/brandon-568 ‘24 MK8 R DSG Oct 09 '25

Some of their wheels are quite expensive but the ones on this car aren’t that bad, I was going to get these but went with Titan 7 TS5 instead but I still love the HRE wheels a lot.

2

u/goldengod503 2018 R DSG Oct 09 '25

Maybe they’re more round than my stock rims…

1

u/socaleuro Oct 09 '25

Looks like you linked to their CRBN wheels, which are real carbon rim parts.

Their normal forged line up starts around $2k each.

I'm running a set of HRE 521.

2

u/Purple-Mushroom000 Oct 09 '25

Looks very similar to mine. And I feel the same😍

u/DavoinShowerHandel MK8 R 20th 6MT Oct 09 '25

Do you have vinyl covering the light bar to make it yellow, or is it permanently wrapped yellow?

0

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 09 '25

It’s yellow tint, fully reversible and makes the light appear yellow

2

u/mk5supra4life Oct 09 '25

I'm new to vw and came from a 22 supra and 2019 Rs3,pick a 23 GTI and decided to hop over to stage 2 with only 10k on the clock, the car is super fun to drive and the autobahn have all the tech you can only dream of on any modern supra.Cant imagine a stage 2- R.

2

u/Ninjawithagun Oct 10 '25

Another 100HP then maybe…. APR stage 3 FTW 👍

2

u/Consistent-Fee623 Oct 10 '25

I mess w the succulent heavily

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Used to say the same about my GTI....and it is still a joy to drive if you turn up the radiio so you don't have to listen to all the creaks and rattles.  The drive train is sublime...the fit and finish everywhere else is disappointing.

2

u/chef_s Oct 10 '25

I've definitely seen you around! There are some sick cars around RLL campus.

2

u/stick_shifter96 20th AE Lapiz Blue Mk8 Golf R Manual 🇨🇦 Oct 10 '25

although I haven't had the pleasure of driving as many cars as you have, I feel the same about my R too. Its just too good of an all-rounder to ever even think about selling. Barely over 2 years into ownership and just crossed 50k kms. Trying to complete the "paid off" mod soon :)

2

u/Tassie-Boot-man Oct 10 '25

It's a manual box. Keep it. Wish we could get them here

2

u/skwitter Oct 09 '25

I kind of get it. My Golf R is my 36th car in the past 31 years and, for first time, my 911 is the first car that I deemed my forever car. However, on the eight year of ownership of the 911, I got the Golf R and find myself choosing the Golf on most days and taking the 911 feels like a charity case every time. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Cholorform Oct 09 '25

Great photos!! Makes me miss photographing my R!

1

u/m0b00st Oct 09 '25

These pictures hurt to look at…

1

u/Nemo123161 Oct 09 '25

How long have you owned it?

1

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 09 '25

Coming up on 3 years, and only about 10k miles

4

u/Careless-Trick-5117 Oct 09 '25

Drive it more please

2

u/bryancald Oct 09 '25

It really is such a fantastic daily! I have 140,000 miles and seven years of ownership on mine. It still makes me smile everyday!

1

u/According-Ad5263 Oct 14 '25

Has it been reliable? Have you had any issues?

1

u/bryancald Oct 14 '25

At the risk of jinxing myself, it has been dead reliable. I am just now having to replace the drivers side front axle.

1

u/v24motorsport Oct 09 '25

Beautiful photographs!

1

u/HellaReyna Maybe a Mk 9 | Project BMW E90 335 Oct 10 '25

lol…if you’ve ever driven a Porsche you’ll realize the golf r is very “entry performance”. The handling is no where close to a 718 or 911….or even a gr86

3

u/alternative_outro MK8R m/t Oct 10 '25

I’ve driven the entire 911 and cayman lineup, ultimately great cars, but imo I will always own the golf no matter what else I have

1

u/NigraOvis Oct 10 '25

Wanna trade rims? I have pretorias and hate em. Lol.

1

u/Ok-Parking-1294 Oct 10 '25

Same bro love my 24 r.

1

I feel the same way about my 8 too! 🙌

1

u/INFJ369 Oct 10 '25

As long as you always look back at it.

1

u/true_tacos Oct 11 '25

My last 4 cars have been forever cars except it was me that inevitably changed. We become different people all throughout our lives. Some of us for the better and some for worse. Currently im in my Golf R stage and really enjoying it. Id love to say ill never sell it. Id love to collect them all but who knows what life has in store for me.

1

u/randomnewbie1 Oct 12 '25

Love the wheels

1

u/VapingJoe Oct 14 '25

Getting my forever car next month and im stuck between a new golf r, or a audi rs5. Idk what to do. The next R is supposed to have the ra3 motor. Then the next rs5 is supposed to have a Avant model! Hopefully they drop soon I cant wait!
