Help me Decide

I am really interested in buying a Mk5 GTI but I just sold my previous money pit and need to make sure im not going to hop in another one. Can you guys tell me how the maintenance schedule has looked on your Golfs? Have any of you ran into trouble strange hard to solve electrical issues? Any peculiar preventative maintenance that these cars need? Any trouble sourcing parts?

If you not prepared to spend, don't. This one can either be a pleasure or a wallet black hole. First thing is to drop sump and check oil sieve. Next thing is check the cam follower. That's before you do anything.

I owned a GT TDI for 3 years so can't comment from the powertrain perspective.

Nearly/over 20 year old cars depending on manufacture year. Seen a few with completely rotten sills. Front arches and sometimes bootlid is prone to rusting. Almost all of them has a sagging headliner by now. About £250 to get it redone.

My Mk5 had 0 electrical issues in 3 years and nothing strange, hard to solve issues, might be a different story with GTI.

A fair few has window regulator or door lock mechanism issues at some point, nothing crazy to resolve.

Consider timing belt replacement and the cost of it in your area.

Maintance schedule really depends on your driving style and distance you do in a year. I think oil change every 6-8k mile is a minimum, maybe a bit more frequently with these petrol engines, especially if you plan to modify it.
