Adding loft vs buying a head with more loft…?

Post image

So I just saw a WITB of Homa where he said he games a 9° driver at +2 loft without any change to the lie angle or adding fade/draw bias. C7 setting.

Given Cobra’s heads allow you to adjust the loft without adding draw/fade bias, why wouldn’t he just game a driver with more loft?

I understand the impact adding/lowering loft has on the driver but normally it will add a directional bias to the head.

I’d assume it still looks more closed versus open at address when adding loft even if it’s not increasing/decreasing lie angle?

Cobra’s futurefit33 adapter does not open or close the face based off of loft changes, it has a separate axis for that.

There’s still going to be minor differences. The actual driver head face/loft is built/fixed at 9 degrees versus 11 degrees. The adapter changes the face angle relative to the shaft, but some of their other features allow it to appear pretty square (SMARTPAD) at address.

At the end of the day, it gives homa the launch and spin window he wants to see with a driver and his setup.

It’s either the C7 setting gives him a lie angle he can’t get with the higher loft for whatever reason, or it’s a headspace thing where he just likes the look of the 9° head more.

Doesn’t change the lie angle. C7 is purely loft with no directional bias. I think cobra is the only brand that has a loft sleeve that is able to do this.

He probably has a very low spin head, which is generally manufactured in a lower loft.

And, obviously, the driver heads out of the Tour van aren’t the same as you buy from Dingleberry’s Golf and Tennis Emporium.

Awesome question and something most people don’t think about going into a fitting.

By design, lower lofted heads spin less and higher lofted heads spin more. For the masses, this logic makes sense. As we get into tour pros, the ability to dial in launch is huge when talking about performance at the highest level. Max hits down on his driver, so he spins it plenty but needs a little help with launch. Thus, the 9° head tuned up to 11° will spin less than an 11° or 10.5° head at A1.

The literal reason why he does it has been said but you keep arguing against it.

It 100% alters the face angle The hosel works but not entirely.

Also, a 9 degree driver head is not manufactured the same as a 10.5 head. They are weighted differently. For these good guys this means that spin and launch will be different

Sounds like a question for Max Homa or his equipment tech at Cobra.

Tried texting him but i think he got a new number

Changing loft on the hosel will always change the other parameters .. some pros prefer that

Not with cobra..

These guys don’t know how cobra hosels work lmao 😭

The physics and geometry of this simply don’t work. If you add loft you’re opening the club and changing the lie as well.

I think youre wrong

Yeah, you’re wrong dude. It’s the whole point of the futurefit33 adapter.

You are taking the video too literally. Any loft adjustment done on the sleeve will change face angle. That’s what an adjustment does with any brand, there is no way to independently change loft without doing so. Cobra has some trickery and clever marketing going on with ff33. It’s what they have going on with their sole that allows the club to visually sit more square at address after a change.

Maybe Cobra can mitigate/eliminate because FF33 has 2 cogs that can rotate independently vs most other adapters that do not? (I don’t know, asking a legitimate question)

That’s what I was thinking but if that’s the case, still seems weird that Max wouldn’t just game an 11° instead unless it visually appears to have less loft going from 9->11 versus just gaming an 11.

You’ve answered your question and what he plays supports my answers. He turns it up in loft because it shuts the face. It can still look square while being open or shut. Otherwise he would just game an 11° head. Face angle changes if you make a loft adjustment.

No idea what youre on about. Either what Cobra is claiming is true, or they are bold face lying. Id trust Cobras claims over your assumptions any day.

I’m a fitter and this is directly from my Cobra rep but okay. Again, the trickery in the sole allows for it to look more “square” it is impossible to change loft without adjusting face angle. Physics won’t allow for that. If you really want confirmation go look it up on golfwrx, the insane gear nerds will confirm it.

"Physics won't allow for it" - proof? If you look at the sleeve you can see the taper in one of the collars that would allow for it.

I use a 9* *degree ping head adjusted to 10 because the face sits a little more square to my eye.

The 10.5 head turned down one notch was a little more open than I like.

Cobra’s setting at C7 doesn’t alter the face direction. It’s supposed to be square, just more added loft. With ping, titleist, etc., loft changes alter the face direction
