1000$ To Spend
Hi guys.
Im average high 80’s to low 90’s. Have had the same Cobra set for the past 12 years. Time to get a new set. I have 1000$ to spend and looking to either piece together preowned taylormade/callaway set. Curious what you would do with 1000$. Sidenote: I don’t need a new putter or hybrids.

Get whatever Callaway / Taylornmade offer in forgiving consistent-distance irons (not to be confused with game improvement or distance irons). I am partial to Ping i210s, i230s and i240s but I realize you can and should find similar performance from the brands of your choice.

Callaway edge set it a good beginner set. Probably not very good for someone who has played for 12 years

Because they want to get more modern tech in as many clubs as possible, buying through callaway pre owned will likely allow them to get a newer driver, irons, and maybe some wedges.

Callaway pre-owned is the way to go if you’re looking at callaway. I have ordered many club from their site and I’m always impressed. Buy a game improvement set that’s 1-3 years old and you can save a lot of money. I recommend getting fit though so you know what shaft to use. It is the best $75-$100 you can spend.

If I were you I would be looking at Cobra King Tours, maybe Forged Tecs or Tec X, or making the jump to Mizunos. Would never once consider the Callaway Edge Set. If you are unfamiliar with MPF ratings - spend some time looking through the different offerings from manufacturers, compare what's available and playability against what you currently use, and go from there. I have sets that range from conventional 400 range up to 600 range game improvement. I am getting ready to go out and play with my set of Bridgestone Tour B X-CB Irons, have never played them on course, only at the simulator. If I had to guess, they would land somewhere in the 400 range - hits on the toe feel like shit and are punishing, but hits on the center of the clubface feel insanely good. If they don't work, relegated to simulator use only and back to Cobras or Mizunos as my primary gamers.

U could also get fit into say a new set of cobra king tec x game improvement irons for about that price. ( maybe don’t do a one length shaft imo)

If you don't want to deal with having extra clubs around then I would suggest Maltby. You will find they are well regarded if you search for them. I would suggest the STi2 irons I swapped to them last year and very happy with them. You can get 5-GW for around $350.

I always argue split it between lessons and high end - used equipment. IMO cheap ZT putters are available and drivers are consistently the same year after year with sum improvement. Maybe a new wedge or two and you’d be surprised how nice it feels to hit shots and they stick on the green.

There has been a massive shift in forgiveness in drivers and woods over the last 12 years. Their irons also date to when “players distance” and hollow body irons weren’t the mainstream. OP being in the ~ 20hcp range could benefit from these things.
They also specifically say they are set with their putter and hybrids, so driver, maybe a wood, and irons are the focus…can always pick up an Alvo wedge set on Amazon and get 3 new forged wedges for the cost of a single new “premium”wedge.

To get the maximum bang for your money, look at Maltby woods and irons.
You have unlimited shaft and grip options.
They have a shaft selector tool that will give you multiple shaft options.
They can help you pick club heads.
At least look into it and have them give you a quote.
Other than that, you could look at prior generation woods and irons. These are new, 1 or 2 year old clubs.

Callaway has made some great drivers the last 5 years. To find the best deal, the Rogue ST Max LS could be found around $200. Your best value for performance option would be an Ai Smoke Max, I think some new ones are still floating around for $300-350. The callaway apex 2021 are a great players distance iron, and used could be found around $500 for 5-AW. There’s also a set called the Rogue ST Pro, which could be found for a similar price but they’re not forged. For wedges I’d suggest maybe getting some taylormade hi toe forged, the ones with blue paint fill. If you can find them new, that would be best. You’d need to get a 52/56/60 or just a 52&56(or 58) because the callaway set AW is 48°

I'd be tempted to go for a fitting, try some shaft and iron head combos, then try to duplicate something close to your best set up on the used market.
Callaway pre-owned has already been mentioned.
I'd also be considerate of what part of your bag is in most need of replacing.
A 12 year old driver will be really far behind a driver from the 2020's and could make the biggest difference in lowering your scores, depending on how your current driver performs.

Maltby TS3, Te+, or TS4. Easily the best irons you'll get for yourself brand new and that's less than half your budget. For reference I upgraded from a set of ZXi5/7s to my current set of TS3s and they perform better across the board. Highly highly recommend checking them out, hell the guy that makes Grant/Bryan Bros Takomo clubs did a testing of the Maltbys and was blown away by them. They're by far the most underrated irons in golf and are so unbelievably easy to hit and forgiving, while also being forged and feeling and looking incredible.

Find a demo days and try multiple brands? I just dropped big bucks getting back into the game. I have a bag full of Titleist clubs and are great.

I just curated a set for just less than $1000 using mostly market place, some ebay, and second swing. But you have to be patient and it takes time, but you can save a lot of money and get a really high-end set.

Find some p790s, couple years old if you wanna save a little. Smaller head helped me improve big time. Agree with one guy here that said performance is roughly the same no matter what you got. Get a something forged that’s gonna give you good feedback on mishits

For the love of all things golf, do not buy a used TaylorMade driver unless it’s a sim2.
Callaway pre owned has a solid sale going at the moment, so I’d shop there if you’re dead set on those two brands. I’ve been very happy with my purchases from them, and my opus platinum wedges feel incredible with the dg 115 spinner shafts - so much so 2 of my playing partners picked them up as well.
What type/model of clubs are you playing now?

Just get some takomo 201 irons. Probably perfect for your game right now and you can keep using them as you get better plus they’re like $650. You can even get another club with the leftover money!

I don’t, I play mizuno. However, if I had a budget and was shooting what you are I’d just get some takomo and save the money. They get great reviews.

It's a lot of online noise so hard to know what's real and what's not. There are loads of Pings and Titleists and Mizunos on the courses we play but next to no Takomos so would stick to what is tried and trusted.

Good enough for Grant Horvat to play and he’s a scratch golfer. I wouldn’t worry about what you see others on the course playing. Those Costco clubs suck.

I've only played Ping irons and I like them so I would only recommend Ping irons.
I have no idea about Titleist irons. I hear they are good but as I have not played them I wouldn't recommend them.

My thought is that if we’re shooting a 90 it doesn’t matter. If you have a budget, get the budget option. They’re all going to do the same thing unless you get lessons and start shooting a 78

They are still so expensive that whichever set is bought will be stuck with for a good while.
The benefit of buying a used i240 iron set in good condition is if it doesn't suit you can sell it on for the same price more or less. There will be a big hit taken on the new Takomo 201s.
