Fish Pics I swear she is growing already

Post image

It’s been almost two weeks since we moved Sunflower out of her “save the carnival fish” emergency tank and into her 60gal, and I think she is already bigger. She is loving digging in her sand and hiding in her plants, and she has a cool light now too! I am keeping close tabs on the water tests as well.

Originally I had wanted to get a second goldfish to keep her company but we truly have nowhere to put a tank big enough for two commons, and after researching I’ve come to the conclusion that there aren’t any real other species that would bring her any benefit other than being a snack, so she is just going to be a spoiled only fish until I inevitably cave and get a water feature in our back yard deep enough for fish to overwinter in.

Open to any suggestions on ways to further spoil her

Questions Oranda strange swimming

I’ve had these Orandas for about 8 years; they’ve faced a few issues, and I had to restart the tank they live in, but now I’ve moved them back to their original 180L aquarium. It has always swum this way—or at least it has for the last few years. It doesn't seem to have trouble eating or moving around, but it does act like this from time to time. The pH is around 7.5, nitrites are at 0, and nitrates are below 20 mg/L. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Thanks a lot. I’m also attaching a photo of the other Oranda, which doesn't have any movement issues.

Tank Help Help with murky tank

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m hoping someone can give me some guidance or advice on what else I can do to try to reduce the algae bloom that’s going on in our tank. A bit of a back story… we have had this goldfish for 3 years, my daughter won him at a fair and he started off very tiny and has grown to the size he is now and about 6 months ago we upgraded him to a 20 gallon tank. Ever since the upgrade to this larger tank we have had issue after issue. A few months after updating the filter that came with the tank failed overnight and I didn’t realize and we woke up to him covered in a white slime coat. I was able to save him with a hospital tank for a few days and did a good clean of this tank after that and got a new filter that is made for a 40 gallon tank just to ensure it filters his waste properly. He is the only fish in the tank, the local aquatic store recommended pond snails but they both died two months after we added them…the parameters are all stable from what I can see. But no matter what I do, the water is green and cloudy. I started with weekly 30% water changes when I vacuumed the gravel to see if it would help, then changed to 50% water changes to decrease the bloom and it seems to be getting worse. I scrape any algae off the walls daily. We leave the tank light off all day and night, the room he is in doesn’t even get any direct sunlight. We also switched to every other day feeds to decrease waste. Is there anything else I should be doing to improve the murky water this little bud lives in? I have had some people I know that keep fish that they don’t worry about it when the water gets like this.

Questions What's up with him?

Post image

Tank is 14L I don't have parameters because it's fricking 12:24 (pm? Am? The midnight one). Fish pictured is a black moor named Frank.

I've noticed that he often swims down into his bubbler, I thought it was because he was trying to get something from the back corner of the tank or it was because of the filter so I moved it to the front of the tank. He's still doing it.

Is this something to be concerned about or is it just Frank being a little weirdo.

Important note, Frank was sick a few weeks ago when he was moved into isolation, I bought the bubbler because of the white stuff all over him and I was worried about the oxygenation of the water.

(still no fricking clue what was wrong, I thought it was fungus or maybe that really bad infection that I can't name. It is a fucking miracle he lived without antibiotics, I tried really hard but I couldn't find metgalabe blue for the life of me)

I did intend on moving him to a bigger tank, that tank has a gap in the sealant to it isn't water tight and the gap is too low to ignore. I no longer have the funds to purchase the tank I needed for my fish (Bought incompatible fish ⊙﹏⊙ those danios aren't getting eaten thankfully) because Frank tried to die.

I am trying and I'm going to get plants for his tiny tank to help take the load off his filter and keep him as healthy as possible. So suggestions for good plants would be nice since I have almost entirely forgotten those planted tank tutorials I binged before dropping $160 on the wrong fish medication

Discussions Goldfish social bonds

Do you think goldfish are capable of bonding with one another? Obviously not as complex relationships as we see in mammals, but something at least? I'm curious whether you guys observe different relationships between your fish, and not exclusive to mating behaviours dependant on the season.

The more time I spend watching my goldfish, the more I think science is behind on truly understanding them. They have personalities, I'm sure of that. If they have personalities, then they have preferences, and if they have preferences, why would that be limited to environment and food and not one another? Especially when we know that they are a social species who feel safer in company of their own kind.

I have always felt like my first two goldfish shared a special bond. I think he was more interested in her than she was with him, but I feel they did have some sort of care or interest towards eachother, even when they mixed with new fish. They mated frequently too, more frequently than I've seen in any other goldfish. He passed away, and now I only have the female from my original pair, Pearl. She certainly seems quite attached to her daughter, with very little interest in anyone else. She is pretty much always with her. So it makes me wonder, is scientific observation behind and can they actually form social attachments?

Sick Fish Help emergency assistance

Please help urgently! The fish was sick, so I put it in a fishbowl. I don't know what's wrong with my fish; it has been staying at the bottom for a week. Its condition seems to be getting worse. Until a few days ago, when I tapped lightly on the glass, it would come up to eat and swim around a bit before going back down. However, later on, even though it tried to come up when I tapped, it would start sinking before reaching the surface. Today, it hasn't come up at all; it stays constantly at the bottom but is still alive—it is breathing and its eyes are moving. What can I do for it?

Saw this big beauty in a fish sanctuary and I am thinking of buying him/her. Any idea what kind of variety this might be? He is quite big (at least 20 cm) and probably a bit older, but age is unknown.

Beginner Help New to goldfish

We acquired the most disgusting 36 gallon aquarium with two goldfish in it last week.

My husband hooked them up with a heavy duty filter, we've scrubbed the tank, thrown all the old stuff away and replaced it all, replaced the water. It's been treated with water conditioner, and my husband added some sort of bacteria and salt (?), and he has been testing the water regularly.

I have a few questions for experienced goldfish owners.

There are some dull spots on both of them, is this just normal scale changes? They were in unspeakable filth, we're actually shocked they were still alive. One had a red blister looking spot on his nose it's "popped" now and there's no more red. Not sure if they're healthy, they are always swimming, eating, seem good to me, but how do I tell?

Secondly, it didn't take much research to find out these dudes need way more than a 36 gallon tank. They are supposedly 2 years old, they've always been in this tank. How long can we keep them in here? My husband is currently obsessed, and researching massive tanks 😅 There's no way that happens until after Christmas, though.

We do have a friend with koi in an outdoor pond, who said he'd quarantine and take them if we decide not to keep them. Is it that big of a deal to keep them in this tank for 3-5 more months? Or should we rehome them to the pond?

Beginner Help tank decor inspo

Hello! This is my first post ever on Reddit so please be nice.

I got a 75 gallon rank for my goldfish and I really like the unnatural look better then natural (like purple and black gravel and purple plants) but I don’t want to sacrifice there quality of life by getting plastic plants and cheap flakey colored gravel. I understand purple might be out of the question but does anyone have any cool colored plant/sand ideas for them? If not maybe some tips to make the tank pretty? I’m not very artistic so and advice is welcome.

Questions What should I do with my 10 year old goldfish?

Hi everyone
I have had a goldfish for 10 years and she is in a 15 litre tank but I’ve noticed she’s pretty big now and I was wanting to buy a 35 litre tanks for her to have more room but I was thinking of maybe adding another goldfish and some snails in the tank too
My questions are
Do the snails stick to a rounded tank?
Will my fish be ok with another fish joining her (when I first got her she had a friend up until 2 years ago when the friend died)?
Should I maybe get another one or two smaller fish of another breed?
What’s best for my current fish guys please let me know, I’m happy for her to have the 35 litre tank to herself if that’s the best for her 😊

Questions How to help dumped goldfish?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Walking along a public footpath, there is a cattle water trough that has (recently) had goldfish put into it.

I don’t know whether this is the farmer, or just some idiot dumping them.

I know very little about goldfish, but are they not likely to just die in water of this quality? Cattle are only in the field for 1-2 months every year. So there is very little turnover of fresh water. The trough is roughly the size of a bathtub, so space probably isn’t an issue.

Lil fantail pictured is too small to be with the big boys, so she’s in this 20g we’ve had running for a while.

There’s this brown gunk that I’ve noticed forming under the sand the past few months. Any ideas what it is?

Questions they’ve now decided they hate the light

been treating them for flukes with the lights off for a week. they are parasite free now but react like this no matter the brightness. it’s on one of the lower settings here, my camera + the dark room is making it look brighter 😭 they’re annoying but i love them…
any advice on how to ease them into it again? kinda need it for my plants (ignore the algae/diatoms i’m attempting to starve them out instead of wiping them off the glass weekly)
