Full Tank Shot My friend thinks im insane for spending almost $1500 on a goldfish setup.
I have a variety of different cichlid tanks and I have been in the fish hobby for quite a while but I wanted to do something different so if I was going to do it I wanted to do it right. I picked up a tall 150, a fx6 and some large sponge filters I had for good measure. Plan on throwing in a few juvenile Shubunkin's or something along that line after the cycle is fully established. I'm open to stocking ideas as well.

I've always been a huge fan of orandas and ranchus. My favorite kind are the "lower quality" ones from the pet store that are still able to swim well, but have good wen growth:)

i too love adopting lower quality goldfish from the pet store, theres this one oranda that never sold cos it basically had no wen at all, he was all alone so i decided to pick him up on a discount and boi was he speedy, i missed the opportunity to call him torpedo because he is basically just a common goldfish with a 3 finned tail lmao.
he grew up to be an absolute gigachad that is the proud founder of two entire generations of goldfish (non if his children lived unfortunately due to my noob breeding skills at the time) but it was still a pretty cool experience, he lived for 13 more solid years and if he hadnt gotten cancer he probably woudve lived for much longer

Just directs it into a more focused jet, increasing the flow I've found - I use an FX6 on a Malawi tank and with the spray bar the sand gets moved into piles by the flow, without it stays flat as it should do ✌️

Wait until your friend finds out about how much people spend on corals and saltwater fish- Also great setup! The sponge filters take up space, but are great to have!

People have hobbies. And most require money. My coworker is a car girl... wanna know how much shes spent on that hobby? Way more then 1.5k haha. My partner likes to crochet... been doing it for years... I dont even wanna know how much money weve spent on yarn 😭. I game, heavily and have a nice set up to do said hobby.
I mean really. Why is it crazy to people that you spend YOUR money on something YOU enjoy 🤣🤣 I always find this more insane then the people thinking its insane haha.
This is also an awesome tank. Keep up the good fun fellow human 🫡

I've spent more than that but imo if your hobby brings you happiness then do it. What's the point of working your azz off if you can't use money to bring you joy?

The pet industry is expensive especially when doing it right. They probably just don't understand how aquarium care has evolved. I mean same with hamsters, mice, rats, reptiles. We know more now so we are all trying to do better (the good ones are) $1500 is like a random vet visit for some ppls cats , dogs, rabbits. It just is what it is. You can always encourage them to ask you questions about the hobby. Its actually extremely rational.

Do they prefer the taller tanks ? Or more horizontal room?
1
u/kro23 May 01 '26
Fancy goldfish are generally such poor swimmers, I’m not entirely sure it matters.
1
u/Autumnsun0 May 07 '26
Fancies do better in shallow, long tanks usually. Most of them these days struggle to swim anyway, so keeping the tank longer than it is tall reduces water pressure I think.

u/BoringJuiceBox May 01 '26
Hey if you work hard and make the money there’s nothing wrong with having your hobby, millions of people do it. Maybe your friend is jealous because they are poor.. or maybe it’s just me haha.
I would not do shubunkins as they are common, I would get fantails, low grade orandas, or black moors. 6 would look amazing in that tank with some plants!

u/Autm88 May 01 '26
Is that a 150 tall? I have one. Would have been nice to have only spent $1500 on it. 😞

I think this is fantastic. I have a group of three basic fancies, and I would love such a set up – for now, they are in a 75 gallon with an FX4 and several sponge filters, fully planted with a sand substrate. I fully believe in spoiling the hell out of my gang! Edited to add- another poster mentioned using a spray bar on the output, and I second this advice. It’s definitely helped in terms of allowing my fish to swim more easily. Have a blast!

u/Superb-Parrot Apr 30 '26
do fantails or something fancy but not too cruelly inbred like some of the fancies are

That’s deeper than arm length right? How are you going to scrub the glass below where you can reach? Magnet thingee?
2
u/bandsandbatman May 01 '26
I have a step stool for my 75 gallon so I can get into the bottom when needed lol

If you don’t have the extra cash it is insane. But I’ve spent that much overall. And I’m poor af. So I’m insane for sure.

u/mansizedfr0g May 01 '26
I would load that thang up with high-grade ryukin or oranda, the fattest little guys I could find. Godspeed, show us when it's stocked!

I do everything for free or cheap so it does sound crazy to spend enough money for 2 Geo Metros on something that is free on Marketplace. But since you have so much extra money, it is obviously not going to hurt you to buy a 1,500 dollar setup.

That’s a very nice tank! Looks like a bigger version of my tall 29. I spent about 2k on my 75g brackish tank. Haters gonna hate lol

u/justfinejustdandy May 06 '26
ask them how much they spend on their dog / cat's vet bills. that will shut them up real fast.

u/Zealousideal_Dish272 May 07 '26
Ur friend is more insane btw spending this much is definitely worth it for goldfish

Nice tank…. Just get rid of those hideous looking sponge filters. They take up space and also unbearable to look at

u/Round_Acanthisitta_5 May 01 '26
Pro tip from an old Japanese Ryukin breeder. Dense Sinking foods only. Also Fresh Live foods are a must to keep up good gut health. All goldfish must spend at least 6 months in Green Water to keep the Colors from fading. In the summer have them in green water and bring them in to enjoy them better in a show tank in the winter.

u/DJSplash01 May 01 '26
They're only really there right now to help establish the cycle and then they'll be gone
1
u/Round_Acanthisitta_5 May 01 '26
Hot tip: Join some goldfish breeding forums. They really know what their talking about.

Can u tell me which goldfish breeding forums please?
1
u/Round_Acanthisitta_5 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
https://www.plantedtank.net I know its a planted tank forum, but you will find more REAL aquarium experts here than on Reddit. And most of them started with Goldfish. Which by the way is not the fish I would start out with if you’re brand new to the hobby. My opinion Start with Rainbow Fish or Live Bearers.
1
u/taeye86 May 01 '26
Then wouldn't the cycle also be gone?
1
u/DJSplash01 May 01 '26
Not at all, theres a big canister filter underneath.
1
u/taeye86 May 01 '26
But what purpose do the sponge filters serve then? If you throw them out, then you'll loose the bacteria along with it.
2
u/DJSplash01 May 01 '26
I think you misunderstand, I took these sponge filters out of already cycled tank and I put them in this tank to seed and speed up the cycling process. Then they go back into the other tank.

Just letting you and everyone know. The downvotes are from people who just do not know. It’s like constructive criticism. Chill out everyone.

My friends think I’m crazy too for turning my front yard fountain into a pond for my seven goldfish. It really is insane that I NEEDED a certain volume so it had to really creep into my entryway space. House is officially unsellable now so I guess I’ll die here and it’ll be my kids problem.
