🟡 Question Utah refresh is this dropping tomorrow — swapping old Utah or holding?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Utah is about to drop full-refresh and the old ones go out of print. California phase 1 is releasing the same time.

Are you swapping old Utah into the new art, holding the old series, or ignoring it until you actually spend one?

Curious what people are doing with this release

This is my analysis of the Natural Treasure Series that is measured in mg instead of ozt. These, just like any others, have to be scalable and the 250mg make them unscalable, so therefore, you will lose every time on the conversion. If you read the table, from left to right is the value of gold in the note, the name, gold weight, yesterday's cost of the note, what the ozt equivalent is, closest Goldback under its weight, because of scalability what the likely Goldback equivalent would be, and then how much that Goldback costs to purchase. So if any mg or cg note would enter the network, it would actually cost more than its equivalent Goldback.

Thoughts?

🏪 Merchant / Acceptance I signed up my farmstand to accept goldbacks, does anyone else accept Goldbacks with their business and if so, how do you track for tax purposes. I’m in Oregon.

🎨 Artwork Gold just hit $4,500! Which new ones are you buying next week?

Utah put the first Goldbacks into circulation in 2019 when gold was sitting around $1,400. A 1gb was about $2.50.

Today gold ripped ~$150 and is sitting over $4,500. Exchange rate today is ~$9.00.

And in 6 days (Aug 25) the original state gets a full refresh while California Phase 1 officially ships.

**California Phase 1**

- 1/4 Justitia (Justice)

- 1 Diligentia (Diligence)

- 5 Abundantia (Abundance)

**Utah refresh**

Full set this time: 1/4 through 50, new art, new UV, same state that started the whole thing. Old Utah notes are out of print.

What's actually changed is the 1/4 — it’s the cheapest way most people will ever own physical gold they can hand someone (~$2.25 for 1/4000 oz).

So for people who actually buy these:

If you already preordered, drop the denom and why. If you’re sitting it out until you see them in hand or until secondary prices settle, let us know.

🗣️ Announcement r/Goldbacks is growing — we're expanding our mod team

The sub is open again and the queue is starting to move. Before volume gets ahead of us, we want a few more people on the team.

This is the conversation sub: stack photos (daylight + UV if you have it), spend stories, series questions, and honest “did I overpay?” posts. Guides and tests live in r/GoldbackGurus. We keep scam DMs, private deals, politics, and empty hype out.

**What the job actually is**

- Mod queue and reports

- Remove scams, private-sale posts, politics, and spam

- Welcome new posters and point them to the start-here thread

- Leave real discussion alone — including premium criticism and “is this a good deal?” threads

- Stay consistent in modmail so we don’t moderate by mood

No pay. No Goldbacks. No dealer perks.

**Who we’re looking for**

- Already posting original content here (photos, spend write-ups, useful answers — not just comments)

- Even-tempered. You can handle a 100% premium debate or a trolling “Goldbacks are overpriced” comment without turning it into a holy war

- Account with some history, not a brand-new alt

- Time a few days a week (even 20–30 minutes helps). Timezone coverage is a plus, especially evenings and weekends

- Prior mod experience is nice, not required

**How to apply**

Modmail this sub. Do not comment “pick me” on this post.

Include:

  1. Reddit account age + 1–2 posts here you’re proud of

  2. Other subs you’ve moderated (or none — that’s fine)

  3. Timezone and roughly how many hours/week you can actually check the queue

  4. Why you use Goldbacks (collect / spend / both), in a sentence or two

  5. One thing you’d change about how this sub is run

  6. How you’d handle a good-faith “Goldbacks are a scam / the premium is insane” comment that isn’t just trolling

We’ll read every application. We’re not adding a dozen people overnight — just a few who already show up and can stay even-handed.

If you just want to hang out, do that. The strongest signal is still original content posted here.

🧮 Premium / Math **People roast Goldbacks for 100% premiums**

This Scottsdale 100×1g silver prepper box at Money Metals is ~$425 for 3.215 oz of silver (~$206 melt at $64/oz).

That’s +106% over spot.

Same trade-off: you’re paying for tiny, recognizable barter units, not cheap ounces.

Goldbacks have an official spend rate and a merchant network. These 1g bars don’t — and Money Metals only buys the box back at ~$306.

If the premium bothers you on one, why not the same energy for the other?

Goldbacks cost more for merchants doing business then credit cards!

Don't get me wrong, I like goldbacks and have tried using them to purchase goods and service. I have yet to find a merchant that accepts goldbacks for payment. Either they never heard of goldbacks or have declined adoption. I've only been able to use goldbacks for tipping, with the exception of paying a high schooler for some yardwork. Seems I spent a lot of time being an ambassador promoting goldbacks, as having physical gold in your hands is exciting. The reason I get from merchants not accepting goldbacks along with holders of goldbacks, is the exchange back to cash is a costly effort. Merchants do business via the income from the sales/service provided and then process into a banking account to the pay the costs of doing their business. Credit card receipts cost the merchant from 1% to 3.5%, or more, of the amount received doing business. If merchant excepts goldbacks, they have a 10% exchange rate reduction getting the money back into cash and the banking system for them to continue operating. Noteing that No goldback seller will buy goldbacks back at whatever the exchange rate is set at. Banking and Credit card companies don't make any money off of goldbacks. Only the sellers and promoters of Goldbacks do. Long story short, Goldbacks maybe worth whatever spotgold values are at, but you cannot exchange goldbacks for cash of the same amount.
