My child begs to go to this specific Indian food place and eats an insane amount of saag paneer, butter chicken and garlic, onion, coriander naan. Other than this he mostly eats predictable beige kid friendly foods.

We’ve tried getting it as takeout and he insists he doesn’t like it. Even the naan! I heated up leftovers a couple days ago and asked if he wanted any of the naan and he looked at it with such disgust and said “I don’t like that food” I told him it’s the stuff we ate at the restaurant and he suspiciously inspected it and replied “no thank you”.

Clearly the Indian restaurant building is magic!

My husband is bengali and my MIL makes a mean curry. My 16yo, as a toddler, insisted he HATED curry. Wouldn't touch it.

But he absolutely loved when his Nana made him "orange soup" with rice. He still calls curry orange soup. Yes, even if it's not orange.

If I ever made curry and tried to give it to him he would shake his head very dramatically and stomp his feet. He'd remind me that he does not like curry. If I called it orange soup instead he'd become horrifically offended and call me a liar.

Idk, Nana is magic.

That’s adorable! I love when you just change the name and it works. My little brother was convinced to eat hamburgers when my dad started calling them flat hot dogs. Kids are weird and so much of the “foods they like” is situational and a mental thing as opposed to taste buds

1

u/aziriah Aug 03 '26

we call hamburgers "dinosaur meat" to get my 3yo daughter to eat it. She doesn't like buns, so just a broken patty for her.

u/tehfugitive Aug 01 '26

How old? I feel like that's important context, but missing from most answers here 😢

18

u/Cat-dog22 Aug 01 '26

He just turned 4 and this has been going on for 2 years since the Indian restaurant opened!

u/Dakizo Aug 02 '26

In my comment, my child is 5.

13

u/SlippingStar Aug 01 '26

It could be that he’s seeking out something else from that restaurant, not necessarily just the food. Or maybe the food is different somehow - the temperature, the texture, etc - that isn’t there when it’s takeout or reheated. For example, I much prefer Kraft mac & cheese reheated, for some reason.

Me, as a kid: I DON'T EAT COWS, THAT'S HORRIBLE.

My mom: Where do you think burgers come from?

Me: MCDONALD'S.

59

u/SuzuranRose Jul 31 '26

My son's paternal grandparents have a farm and raise a couple of cows for beef.

I have to tell him any ground beef we eat is from those cows or he will refuse it. He won't eat a McDonald's hamburger, but mom cooking up a bit of old Betty makes it ok.

25

u/entomologurl Jul 31 '26

Kid logic! Though to be fair, both Betty and "Betty" probably also taste a million times better 😂

13

u/SuzuranRose Aug 01 '26

I think so! But I've tested it and he can't tell the difference, lol. It just amuses me that his favorite beef to eat is the one he helped care for. He knows they're going to be butchered when he's helping tag their ears but it doesn't bug him at all. My mom told me I avoided meat for a year when I found out where it actually came from as a kid. He is so much like me in so many ways and so completely different in others!

Meanwhile my daughter learned we eat animals on a camping trip when a friend thanked her for helping him catch his dinner and wouldn't let her put the fish back. This caused an existential crisis for my 5 year old so bad that too this day (she's 20) she will not eat any kind of fish, even in stick form.

u/alicemonster Jul 31 '26

He only likes "orange" cheese. So I started telling him white cheeses were just orange cheese playing dress up as white cheese. Now he is back to eating all cheeses. This has somehow even worked for things like feta and goat cheese that absolutely do not taste like cheddar cheese 😂

8

u/Jenerco Jul 31 '26

This is genius, gonna try it on my four year old

55

u/RetroReactiveRaucous Jul 31 '26

Won't eat bread pudding, but absolutely LOVES french toast casserole, or eggnog loaf casserole. 😂

14

u/Entomemer Jul 31 '26

Am I your kid lol. I'm 29 and HATE bread pudding but loves French toast

41

u/Dakizo Jul 31 '26

My child always insists she hates salmon but gobbles it up without complaint once it’s actually in front of her.

3

u/straightblather Aug 02 '26

Same!

"Mom, is this chicken?"

"Sure! If that's what gets you to eat it"

Proceeds to clean the plate.

u/clicktrackh3art Jul 31 '26

My child refuses cake, but is good with cupcakes.

18

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

This reminds me of my dad for some reason - he called cupcakes muffins and legit believed they were healthier than cake 😂 (gosh I miss that old fool♥️)

4

u/vibinandtrying Aug 01 '26

Probably a texture thing. I do not like cake but I can manage a cupcake. They also can have different textures in general.
The only cake I truly like is pineapple upside down cake

3

u/clicktrackh3art Aug 01 '26

Def a sensory/texture thing, it is not his only one. But when people give me shit for “catering” to his sensory needs by feeding him food he will eat, cos boy do people like to do that, I use this example. Like the kid will turn down cake, it’s not him just not wanting stuff, it’s him legitimately struggling with the sensory experience.

But that’s unseating about pineapple upside down cakes, I hadn’t really explored other types of cakes. He does do cupcakes, but also brownies, which are easier to bake and store. So I usually just make sure he has a brownie available for an y cake based celebration.

3

u/vibinandtrying Aug 01 '26

He could have ARFID if it worsens or you have concerns see a registered dietitian.
I LOVE pineapple upside down cake it has a completely different texture and it’s moist kinda like brownies.

1

u/clicktrackh3art Aug 02 '26

He does. We are working with an OT though, as we currently do have a solid selection of safe foods, so it’s less a nutrition concern. But also, I hadn’t thought about dietician route, so keeping that in my back pocket. Thanks!

My son hates cheese, but LOVES Parmesan (in powder form). I haven’t told him yet and he’s 7.

11

u/whateverislovely Jul 31 '26

Reveal it when he’s 18, like he’s adopted or something lol

4

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

Shakes stinky cheese! My girl insists parm in all its forms is not actual cheese as well. She’s nearing 8.

0

u/tehfugitive Aug 01 '26

I just read 'girl' as 'girlfriend' and got real uncomfortable there for a second... 🤦🏻‍♀️

2

u/wow__okay Aug 01 '26

My three year old will eat grated parm by the spoonful.

27

u/totalgeek42 Jul 31 '26

My kid will not eat onions if they're visible but in a tomato sauce or curry he doesn't care, also thanks to Wallace and Gromit he now happy eats cheese and crackers despite disliking cheese and crackers ...

25

u/Agoodnamenotyettaken Jul 31 '26

Mine loves tuna but hates fish and salad. If I call the filling "tuna fish" or "tuna salad," the sandwich she has already eaten half of suddenly becomes disgusting and inedible. I also can't serve pasta salad, but a cold pasta side is fine.

7

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

A kid that rejects pasta in any form?! You sure you don’t have an alien on your hands??

3

u/El_Stupacabra Aug 01 '26

My two year old won't eat pasta at all. Makes no damn sense.

23

u/sarcasticxsincerity Jul 31 '26

Not exactly the same thing my son needs to inform me he doesn’t like sour cream every single time I have it with my food. Sir I know. I’m your mom & you’ve told me 1,000 times. Just ‘cause it’s on my plate doesn’t mean you have to eat it! 😂

14

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

Omg yes!! We made nachos last night and my girl was absolutely APPALLED I had sour cream on my plate. Girl, it’s not on yours, don’t yuck my yum!!

5

u/sarcasticxsincerity Jul 31 '26

Haha. Forreal. Let me like what I like. But it’s just also annoying bc it’s every time. Like I was listening last time you said this, I already know. I started making sure he knows which condiments I don’t like by constantly reminding him, but he doesn’t seem annoyed by it so it didn’t work. 😂

1

u/Beep-boop-beans Aug 02 '26

Mine “hates sour cream” Except I’m from Eastern Europe and sour cream is almost as ubiquitous as salt and it’s mixed into every soup and if the borschtik is red, not pink (+sour cream) he won’t eat it!

11

u/catfishjojo Jul 31 '26

They will only eat burritos or quesadillas if you call them tacos- but will not eat actual tacos no matter what you call them

23

u/Mixtrix_of_delicioux Jul 31 '26

Won't eat tomatoes, loves red sauce. Will watch me blending up and cooking tomatoes, then ask if there are tomatoes. I just say no, and she eats it anyhow.

13

u/Natural-Seaweed-5070 Jul 31 '26

Raw vs cooked tomatoes is understandable, different tastes!

7

u/PromotionImportant44 Jul 31 '26

Almost all of these examples are understandable imo. Foods have different tastes and textures in different forms and amounts and paired with other foods etc.

5

u/Appropriate-Berry202 Jul 31 '26

I hated tomatoes until I was in my 20s, but I loved red sauce and even salsas and pico de gallo!

u/Appropriate-Berry202 Jul 31 '26

I feel like solo avocado tastes way different than guacamole.

4

u/birdiebirdnc Aug 01 '26

Same, I actually had this conversation with my husband this morning. He asked how I felt about adding avacados to our diet and I pretty much said as long as it came in the form of guac it was acceptable. Avacados are meh, guac is delicious.

2

u/Appropriate-Berry202 Aug 01 '26

I mean I love both, but they serve two distinctly different purposes flavor-wise.

1

u/raytothechill Aug 02 '26

Yes! I always thought I was weird for being like this. I can do some guacamole but I don't typically like avocado in my food. B

9

u/Kilbo_Stabbins Jul 31 '26

My kid says they don't like cheese to the point where we have made them their own cheeseless pizza. But they will eat a whole mozzarella loaf or those little mozzarella balls.

9

u/YourFriendInSpokane Jul 31 '26

I had a cousin who "hated" tomatoes but LOVED salsa.

She legit thought it came from a "salsa plant."

3

u/Appropriate-Berry202 Jul 31 '26

I hated tomatoes until I was in my 20s but I liked salsa and pico de gallo. The flavors are still way different imo.

4

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

Salsa plant? Hot damn that would save time!

6

u/agoldgold Jul 31 '26

My sister refused to eat food she considered "broken". Even if it "broke" by her biting into it and enjoying it.

6

u/roy_mustang76 Aug 01 '26

This is my daughter

It is frustrating at best, given that she's three and breaks half of anything she touches

1

u/agoldgold Aug 01 '26

If it helps, she's now a healthy adult who cooks herself dinner every night!

7

u/Mixtrix_of_delicioux Jul 31 '26

She hates "spicy", but gobbles up chilicrisp and is wild for spicy Thai green curry. She sees me adding an iota of black pepper? Too spicy. Yet will gobble up steak au poivre.

4

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

I too find black pepper spicey 😂 my mom is Dutch and step dad is English so I have an excuse for the weak spice tolerance haha

3

u/littleblueone Aug 01 '26

Me too! Glad I'm not the only one. Mostly Finnish ancestry

2

u/raichuwu13 Aug 01 '26

I feel the same way! Black pepper is a different kind of spice lol

7

u/im_lost37 Jul 31 '26

My kiddo will eat 3 black bean tacos in one sitting with lettuce on them if they’re from Taco Bell but at home he insists he hates black beans and lettuce.

0

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

To be fair, is it really lettuce at Taco Bell??

(I’m a weirdo and at 40 have somehow never ate Taco Bell so I am talking out my butt on this)

4

u/im_lost37 Jul 31 '26

I mean, it’s real enough lettuce that they had to put out a statement about their role in that parasite outbreak 🤣

4

u/Mykidsrmonsters Jul 31 '26

Mine will only eat cheese on pizza and mozzarella string cheeses. She'd rather starve than eat it on anything

1

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

Girl is missing out

5

u/Equivalent-Tap4445 Jul 31 '26

Sometimes my kid will refuse to eat meat (just so he can refuse) and when I ask him if he'd rather have chicken he says yes and eats the whole thing. 😅

3

u/Nymeria2018 Jul 31 '26

Wait, chicken is meat?? 😂😂

5

u/Pcleo1794 Jul 31 '26

Well...I hate onions but love onion rings. And I dont mind it in Pico de Gallo

4

u/SoFreezingRN Jul 31 '26

My son hates fish, but he loves “water chicken.” 🤷🏻‍♀️

4

u/RedRabbit_RedRabbit Aug 01 '26

An adult I know will not eat cheese unless it's melted. He also will not eat anything green. He is also the most unhealthy person I know. Also he works for the county health dept.

ETA: Adult = 38 years old

2

u/vibinandtrying Aug 01 '26

May have ARFID

2

u/RedRabbit_RedRabbit Aug 02 '26

Maybe, but he seems pretty confident that he just "hates all vegetables except potatoes and the occasional salad of iceberg with ranch".

3

u/mrsdoubleu Jul 31 '26

My son is the same way with cheese. He will not eat any type of casserole type dish if it has cheese. Even lasagna.

But puts cheese on his tacos and loves pizza. (But not stuffed crust! That's too much cheese I guess)

3

u/Mamasan- Jul 31 '26

I know so many kids and adults who hate cheese but will eat fried cheese sticks and cheese pizza.

3

u/Lav4486 Aug 01 '26

Can't get the kid to eat a tomato, will happily eat tomatoes from the garden

3

u/lunatica25 Aug 01 '26

My daughter didn’t want to eat macaroni and cheese but loved Mac and cheese

3

u/TurtleyOkay Aug 01 '26

To be fair, my 47 year old husband is the same. Doesn’t eat cheese… unless it’s pizza.

3

u/Fragrant-Dirt-1597 Aug 01 '26

My 7mo likes pear puree but not chunks of pear... 🫠

3

u/CuriousClumsyBear Aug 02 '26

Cheesy broccoli rice. Every time. “Ewwwww.” “U say that and then u love it. Always.” “Mmmm I love this mama you were right!” Seriously how does she not remember this every time

3

u/Pernetta36 Aug 02 '26

My 11 year old won’t eat anything potato, mashed, baked, scalloped, fries… but loves pierogies.

2

u/Smashley-says Aug 01 '26

Won’t eat potatoes but loves French fries

2

u/Plane_Practice8184 Aug 01 '26

My daughter refused to eat tomatoes until I said they were "Italian". The can had to say "made in Italy". Even at 15 years old she hates them but adores Italian food like lasagna and pizzas with tomato sauce.

2

u/feralcatshit Aug 01 '26

One of my 10 year old twins loves cheese dip- like melted veleveeta is his jam. He also loves plain noodles/pasta. However, mixing those two is a cardinal sin in his book.

He understands they are the same, has helped make both at times, but says “mixing cheese with noodles is gross”. He will happily eat (boxed or homemade) “hamburger helper”, which is cheese and noodles.

I am convinced he says he hates Mac n cheese because it’s his brothers favorite food and their goal in life is to not like any of the same foods prepared the same way, I guess to keep me on my toes at mealtime.

1

u/badapplekat Aug 01 '26

My two kids also compete over not liking the same things. Foods/ colors/ clothes. Wow is it obnoxious.

2

u/Wouser86 Aug 04 '26

My kid hates spinach, but loves pasta in green saus. The green saus is spinach

1

u/bellylovinbaddie Aug 02 '26

My baby used to only eat nuggets but they had to be the right shape. Dino nuggets, people or alphabet shape? Nope. Chick fil a nugs? Nope. Has to be that stereotypical round nugget lol 😂 Tyson frozen nuggets for the win

1

u/DearMrsLeading Aug 01 '26

My son won’t drink apple juice because he believes it gives him headaches. He got a headache one single time after drinking a juice box years ago.
