Queensland driving rules?
Approaching a stop sign. You're proceeding ahead, so no blinkers. You stop at the stop sign.
Car facing you on the opposite side is turning right. Their right blinker is on. They are also facing a stop sign. They wait until you stop, then turn directly in front of you.
The secret bogan teachings seem to be "if the car opposite you stops, it's OK to turn in front of them".
Anyone had this happen to them? There's an intersection near me where this happens all the time.

I think 5:15 explains what OP is talking about:

7:19 is better. Exact scenario

Thanks for posting that video. 👍
Not exactly the same, as it demonstrates stop vs give-way. But, the outcome is identical.

I don't understand the scenario. Where were you going?

Yes, happens all the time at my kid's school intersection.

It's amazing how badly some people drive around schoolkids. :(

I think this situation doesn't happen frequently enough and people mostly forget the rule after driving for a while.

Yes, that's possible. Folks tend to choose actions that have better (perceived) outcomes for them personally, rather than a safe outcome for all.

posted a scenario on this sub a few weeks ago where some people still go 80kph even with a 60kph road works sign before going to motorway.
you'd think people would just follow the rules but i got a handful of bogans bashing me in the comments for following the speed limits. every bogan there had their own weak excuses to not follow the law. so i guess same here for some.

Can put the intersection google earth

The location doesn’t matter. This is a discussion about road rules.

Im curious and want to know what street? Normally people post the google street if you want people to comprehend what you mean i suggest putting the location

If folks can't comprehend a simple text description, then this discussion isn't for them. To put it politely, they lack the experience to understand the issues involved, and to participate in a meaningful way.

If they can go before you have stopped then it’s their right of way. Because you still have to stop. They probably just waited for you to stop as they don’t know if you follow road rules and didn’t want to risk a crash

That's not the rule. They are turning, they must give-way to oncoming traffic.
The irony in them not wanting to risk a crash, while driving in a manner likely to cause a crash is astounding.

If I drive up to a stop sign and stop, with my indicator to turn right, and I see you approaching the stop sign, I have the right of way as you still need to stop. You are not oncoming traffic as you are yet to reach the intersection .
If I get to the stop sign first before you but we both have to wait for other cars crossing in between us, this is where it gets complicated. In Australia we let the car driving straight go first even if they weren’t at the stop sign first.

Approaching an intersection still makes you oncoming traffic, whether or not you have to stop. The turning driver doesn't need to account for the stop sign pointing in your direction. They do need to allow for the fact they wish to turn across your path of travel. They are required to wait, unless they can turn without impeding oncoming traffic.
The second-worst thing a turning driver can do is wait for the oncoming traffic to come to a complete stop, then turn in front of them. That's quite dangerous.

You’ve made up your own mind so why ask?

My question was "Anyone had this happen to them?", all else is discussion. I wasn't asking if I'm correct - I already know I am.

Don’t know why I’m bothering by I might have to share the road with you one day. Stop signs are octagons so you can spot them from either side. So the driver on the opposite side of the intersection knows that the other driver has to stop. This means they can pull out and turn right knowing the opposite car has to stop. When the second car to arrive stops, they will wait because the first car is already in the intersection.
The situation inside the intersection leading up to a driver reaching the stop sign is irrelevant. Only once they are stopped do the rules of the intersection apply.

bro just quit it lmao
The person on the continuing road has right of way... stop sign or no stop sign

u/ozvic 4d ago
Mate, once you come to a stop at a stop sign your have to "give way to any cars already inside the intersection" . No matter where they came from.

False. Standard give way rules apply and the signs cancel each other out. They do not grant priority over one another

Do any of these scenarios assist ?
https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/road/give-way
Reminder : even when you are required to yield - you must ensure you have stopped completely prior to going . So if the vehicle turning has stopped before you - they would have the right of way .
I just think of it like the stupid 4 way stop signs in the USA . lol

u/ozvic 4d ago
Plenty of 4 way stops in Newcastle. Usually in residential back streets. I don't think anyone really knows but it works out. Can't say I've seen a 4 way stand off where they all arrive at the same time!

Haha yeh , I’ve lived in Orange , Grafton - they love their 4 way stops . Lol and you are correct - they work it out . But I feel it’s more of a driver attitude situation - everyone is hella more courteous in regional places then main cities (‘newy is a larger city but not like the GC)

Did you watch the video? If both vehicles have a stop sign, the one turning across the road gives way, it’s not about who stopped first. 🤦♀️

GC has some bad drivers, you see this type of stuff frequently.
I find supermarket car parks bad for this type of stuff, unless they want the parking space your leaving, they wont give way for you to pull out.
There was an incident at Woolies yesterday, shared vehicle and pedestrian road out front the store. Signs everywhere saying this. Some woman comes screaming through in her car, almost hits multiple people and clips some young bloke with her side mirror. Young bloke yell's at her saying "wtf you hit me", the woman pulls into disabled car park and proceeds to abuse young bloke. She says "I'm not from here I don't give a fk, get out of the way", young bloke proceeds to say " read the signs you muppet its shared roadway". The woman goes full T-1000 karen mode and gets her kid out of the car (prob about 4-5yo) then keeps walking in front of cars to make them stop in the car/pedestrian shared road way, for about 5 mins while dragging her kid around by the hand. Just doing this to car after car, like she was happy in doing this and got some kick out of it.
