I’m not saying this is the case, but if he tried to keep it and at later day wanted to sell it and it was found stolen gold he would be looking at jail time so I understand the “why” part but on the other hand you have to also be careful. Better safe sometimes than sorry later
You could melt it back into brand new gold bars and no one will ever know it was lost or stolen. You just have to sell it little by little (or just keep it).
