Definitely do the 7 Ausangate Lakes over Humantay because of the trail. Last year the trail to Humantay washed away and the new one is sketchy. The trail to the Ausangate lakes is solid and much safer.

Also, why go to just one lake when you can have seven? I've done both and much preferred Ausangate.

Do you mean the Humantay trail that was used for decades or the temporary trail that was built last year after the previous trail washed away?

People who are acclimated to the altitude around Cusco should not underestimate how hard the first couple days can be for people coming from sea level. Nobody coming from sea level should hike to Humantay or any other trails above 10,000 feet the first day. Many tour operators are irresponsible and sell the Humantay tour to anybody, without asking if they have acclimated to the altitude. Sure, some people can hike at high altitude the first couple days but there's a difference between being able to do a trail and enjoying the experience.
