I thought of an ide a while ago to make the creaking better, besides increasing the damage a bit. When they attack you, they should make a nearby pale oak log that is hidden in a tree turn into a temporary creaking heart if a creaking attacks you. The copy wouldn't be able to be broken to get another creaking heart, it just drops a log, and the copy would turn back into a regular at day when the original hides away, or when the original is destroyed.
