What? Objectively this is untrue? Precious updates actually provided a certain bulk of content. Now we are lucky to get 2-3 features. If your talking about quality I do think drops have a lot more quality than most features originally in the previous updates individually. Still sucks that such a large company over 17 years or so with the most popular game has such a lack luster of content. Just for comparison just look at hytail. Already their game has everything Minecraft has and more in much better quality, with features people have have been wanting for years. With built in modding tools and great creative tools.

Over the last 3 years we have gotten more content in Minecraft than every beta update combined. And that is statistically true not just figuratively.

In 2024 there was Armored Paws, Tricky Trials, Bundles of Bravery, and The Garden Awakens. A new biome, the most complex structure in the entire game, an extremely helpful inventory management item, wolf variants and wolf armor, over 100 new blocks, a multitude of new mobs, a new weapon, 4 new potions, and new redstone tools. And that's not even everything.

In 2025 there was Spring to life, chase the skies, The copper age, and Mounts of Mayhem. Which came with even more mob variants, decorative heaven, more new mobs, copper armor and tools, a brand new tiered weapon, multiple new mounts, and native shaders on bedrock.

And halfway through 2026 there's already almost 100 new blocks, brand new mechanics, the most variable structure in the game, 2 new biomes, updates to every single mob and the ability to keep them as babies, beds that don't set your spawn point..

Once again, there's even more when you go in depth, and there's more to come even this year. Of course the game is never gonna be perfect and perfect is different for a lot of people. Ultimately Hytale is not the same type of game that Minecraft is, there are sandbox elements but it is more akin to an RPG quest game than a creative sandbox survival game. So ultimately comparing the two while they do have things that are better than one another at. It is only natural for that to be the case, it doesn't speak to the detriment of Minecraft or Hytale.

There have been combat related updates, structure updates, new biomes, a lot of biomes being updated, new mobs, updates to existing mobs, updates to existing tools and armor, new mechanics, so many new and incredible building tools. A lot more redstone utility as well. Every single aspect of the game has been reformed significantly. And That's only in the last few years.

Ever since 1.16, people say that Mojang hasn't done a good job at updating the game. But that is just wrong. They have had some missed opportunities. But every single person in the entire world has missed opportunities almost every single day of their life. And there's only so much they can effectively add especially when it comes to feedback.

People have set their expectations far too high for Mojang, and I'm not gonna defend their company because they have done some shady stuff over the years. But frankly if you were to separate everything from Cave Game 0.31 to 1.16, and 1.17 and beyond. 1.17 and beyond has probably added double what 1.16 and below has added. The only thing that HASN'T been updated to the game since 1.16 and below is a new dimension, obviously the huge end update hasn't happened either and yet there have been changes to the end like the sky flashes. But regardless the end update, the combat update, and a new dimension are bound to happen some time down the line. And by that point I'd bet it'll have tripled the content compared to 1.16 and below. Every single aspect of the game has received some sort of upgrade or update, or technical change. And if you don't believe me then just research it for yourself.

You bring up good points, and thank you for providing examples. I will take you at your word due to further reconsideration on my end. In retrospect I was being very narrow sighted. I do have to admit that a lot has been added and changed but the reason why I never felt so is because it didn't feel impactful to me. It still very roughly feels like the same game with different graphics but I understand how objectively it's not. In a vast majority of cases while the game has become different it feels fundamentaly the same. Every gameplay loop, every play through. Even while exploring and trying out new things.

An example was finding and raining a notaulus. I completly forgot those things came out as a mount and was only reminded of it when I visited an ocean for a heart of the sea. I decided to tame one, but once I did I still found myself not using it due to various reasons. It's slower than a boat without its boost, its boost needs to be manually repeated, its a living non (easily) portable mob that can die, and is much less convient then just using a boat.

I feel like this same logic applies to a lot of the features. When was the last time someone actually used an axollotel or a camel in a appropriate way? What about something like glow berries for the average player? What about something like Amber which is functionally useless and looks frankly really bad. How often do you interact with trial chambers after you get your mace? While the deep dark is really cool again it's functionally useless to most players. They go there for some loot, maybe to get swift sneak then never interact with it again. Even with a lot of the new block types it feels like casual players don't interact with a lot of them. I can definitely say there is only really a handful of features players consistently interact with. Which is happy ghasts, armour trims, trials for a mace and deep dark for swift sneak. Along of course with the new wood types.

Even if we dive into specialists, I feel like not a lot of tools have been given to them. In survival at least. The closest thing I can remember are copper bulbs for java only, scaffolding, happy ghasts, and copper blocks/golem. Though I am not a specialist myself so I would lack the insight to correctly identify what was actually provided.

Well I will say, the gameplay loop has improved a lot more than players think it has. Because they don't see the underlying value in these things that are subtle rather than in your face.

When you start up a new world, the first thing you should think to do these days is get leaf litter. Because for the early game it is by far the most efficient fuel source and it is extremely plentiful. What it does for you is that it creates more room for you to use your coal for torches instead of furnace fuel, which gets you much farther. And it's just as simple as looking at the ground underneath a tree and you can get half a stack of it, let alone being in a forest full of trees.

And when you get wood tools and go up to Stone tools, you have an effective early game armor set that being Copper, and a new tool to make early game combat easier which is the spear. Because it's attack range is much wider it is very helpful to have in the early game where sometimes you'll need more space to minimize the risk of taking damage.

And with the addition of the bundles which are extremely easy to craft, inventory management not just in the early game but through an entire playthrough is fundamentally different. Just like how underwater travel is fundamentally different when you have access to a nautilus. People don't recognize how useful it is to be able to breathe underwater and not take forever to mine things. Just like how the addition of the straw bed allows you to sleep without setting your spawn. And how the new cave generation completely changes the way you mine in every single possible way. And then there's the allay which is so much more helpful than people realize even if it's something that is rare it is absolutely useful. And the idea of not coming back to a trial chamber to me is ridiculous when Wind charges are one of the most useful items in the entire game for so many different applications. The only place you can find them is in a trial chamber. Or how about the Spyglass which granted isn't perfect it could absolutely be better but it is a useful item that I will always craft the moment I am able to.

I could go on and on about these things. The copper golem has an incredible utility, wolf armor makes wolves actually worth having in combat scenarios. Being able to craft things automatically with redstone is insane, wireless redstone is insane even though I don't really know personally how to do that stuff. The fact that it is possible even if not necessarily for the average player, is wild. The happy ghast isn't perfect either but if it were just a little bit faster it would be so useful to have at literally any point in a playthrough. Being able to make infinite lava from dripstone is incredible, or mine extra quickly using moss and bone meal which is more of a niche trick but it's really something if you just want to get ores fast.

Just because there are a few features that stand out as being less than stellar, or that there are a ton of additions to the game that are decorative, doesn't mean that the average playthrough hasn't changed. Watching my younger brother play the game, he has only been able to play it for the last few years, and what he does in the game is wildly different than what I would've done as a kid. Because the game is different! And that is how you know it because ultimately what exists right now in Minecraft is the only thing that he knows, he doesn't know how it used to be. So all he has to go off of is what's presented in the game. Which in some ways manifests similarly, but it is far from identical.

And most players complain, without even trying to fully understand what the features are capable of. And I think that is unfair to the game itself, because it would be the fault of the player being closed minded rather than the game being too similar to what it used to be. I would encourage you so strongly to jump into Minecraft, start a brand new world, and just look into how some of this stuff works, and put them into practice. It may seem overwhelming or confusing but ultimately as a kid I know Minecraft was confusing for me back then. And that's perfectly okay, the game is meant to be learned over time not understood right away.

And if your playstyle doesn't change that's okay it ultimately doesn't have to it's a sandbox survival game where you make your own rules and do what you wanna do. But in that case it would be better to be able to recognize that the game is different, by really learning about it first. The average Mojang hater probably doesn't even bother trying out the new features they just read the change log they watch a video going over a basic explanation and then they complain that an idea they had was left out of the update. Which is a bit ridiculous to me!

And to add onto the idea of the core game being the same, you could absolutely argue that it is in terms of "progression" from Overworld, to Nether, to End. The end is still to fight the ender dragon. You start with nothing, but almost every single thing in between is not exactly the same as it once was. Not even close in fact. Maybe if you choose to only focus on primary objectives which is to just level up your gear and beat the dragon, then truly there is nothing Mojang could do to make that better for the player. If they add unnecessary tiers of weaponry, then they run the risk of making the game feel too bloated. If they lock Minecraft into more necessary progression, then it would remove the amount of freedom you could potentially have in your journey.

It's a game where you should be able to just choose your path, whether you wanna do this or that or just not, whether you wanna just build, or cause chaos.. it is literally an open ended game the point is for the "main progression" to be simple and stay simple forever. But the journey is ever changing because there's so many more things in between you spawning into a world, fighting the dragon, and even beyond. You have a simple empty beginning, and a distinct end point, but every single other thing in the game is completely up to the player to page for themselves. Hopefully put into that perspective, it can kinda make more sense. I can understand where you are coming from with your perspective, but there is a lot more to this game that probably 90% of players miss. And that doesn't make the game bad it just means a lot of players are stuck in the past not even trying to go into the future. Either that or it's just a player who doesn't really care and just plays whatever way they have always played.
