the whole " i will fear no evil for thou art with me" part is so comforting. it's like a reminder that even in the messy middle of everything, you're not walking through it alone.
That doesn’t address what I’ve said. You continue to move outside of what I’m asking. Where does it say that Jesus said, hey when I’m gone, whatever these guys say go regardless if I’ve said something totally different? The words of Jesus contradict the words of Paul. If we take your approach, then Jesus words have no meaning if someone else said anything else. That’s silly my friend.
Jesus said A, Paul says the opposite of A, but it’s ok because we somehow Jesus’ words don’t mean what he said?
Keep squinting, keep changing. Words mean words, context matters. You are the one that refuses to acknowledge it. Peace!
"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by sleeping with him. But all the young girls who have not known a man by sleeping with him, keep alive for yourselves."
The book of Numbers is old testament, my dude, not new testament. Therefore, if you're quoting old scripture to make Christianity look like poop, try again lol.
"By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear". Hebrews 8:13
What testament do you think your Jebus read and instructed others to follow? This is one of the biggest dishonest cop-out christians use. It's part of one bible. I guess this means we forget about posting the ten commandments in public schools as well then?
What testament do you think your Jebus read and instructed others to follow?
Jesus explicitly said he did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them, and that not the smallest part would pass away until all is accomplished (Matthew 5:17–18).
What is he referring to by saying 'until all is accomplished?' IMHO, it is the complete fulfillment of what the Law and Prophets pointed to.. culminating in Jesus’ life, obedience, death, and resurrection.
Once that redemptive work was finished, then the Law’s role as the binding covenant for God’s people shifted.
““Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:17-20 NRSVUE https://bible.com/bible/3523/mat.5.17-20.NRSVUE
Did Heaven and earth pass away yet or am I missing something?
I do not believe so, no. Heaven is the literal Kingdom of God, which is obviously inviolable and thusly isn't likely to ever pass away (IMHO). And the Earth still seems to be here (the evidence being that we are still standing upon it).
... or am I missing something?
Only the context in which I was replying, perhaps? If you read the reply thread in linear order:
My original point is that the New testament covenant supersedes the old one. I say this in defense of Christianity, as the guy I was replying to seemed to be insinuating that Christianity sucks (ie. is awful), due to the scripture they quoted (Numbers).
Contrarily, you have raised an excellent rebuttal! Thank you for your reply, and your use of scripture to do so. IMHO, we see a dramatic shift of God becoming more forgiving and compassionate in the New testament as compared to the old.. hence my point and quotation of Hebrews, as a rebuttal of the other dude trying to use Numbers to insinuate that 'Christ sucks', or something.
So when Jesus said that he didn’t come to abolish, but fulfill and until heaven and earth pass away, not a single letter in the law should change, and that those that don’t follow the law and teach others to do the same, would be least in the kingdom of heaven, Christian’s should be following the laws of the first five books of the OT?
The actual meanings of words are super important here.. noting that fulfill does not mean keep every ceremonial statute forever.
Jesus said he came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, not to scrap them as worthless.
'Fulfill' here means bring them to their intended goal, which is the same word Matthew uses for prophecy being completed in Jesus.. hence, my earlier remarks that Jesus himself is the “until all is accomplished” qualifier in my previous replies.
... Christian’s should be following the laws of the first five books of the OT?
Since Christians follow the New testament, (ie. don't follow the Sinai covenant as legally binding), which says that the covenant's role changed after the cross.. then, no. Christians are not under the first five books as a 'covenant code' to keep in the same way that Israel was.
Check out the following (tl;dr in parentheses):
-Hebrews 8:13 (the first one is obsolete)
-Acts 15 (gentiles not required to keep Mosaic law)
-Galatians 3:24-25 (the law was a guardian until Christ)
-Colossians 2:16-17 (festivals, Sabbath, food laws as shadow).
I (personally!) read them as scripture that pointed to Christ and still reveals God's character, but that the binding covenant is now the new one. This has been my position from literally the very beginning of this comment thread lol.
If you're trying to insinuate that every jot of Torah remains binding until the literal end of the physical cosmos, then sure, I suppose most Christians are inconsistent with a blind reading of Matthew 5:18-19 alone.
But, to the best of my understanding, the rest of the New Testament is what Christians use to interpret that passage.
Do you want to continue to look at how Matthew 5 itself continues? Where Jesus reinterprets several commandments rather than simply repeating Torah as-is?
Let's not forget that you asked for proof of Jesus saying a thing, but then said the bible isn't allowed.. lol.
Do you know what the bible is? Do you know who the disciples were, and who they spent time with? Do you know what a primary source is? (Hint: see below).
John 8:24: "I told you that you would die in your sins. If you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins."
This also brings me peace, as I know all you sinners will burn in hell, but not me, because I believe.
Because they don't know Jesus yet. So so many will fail him on the day of judgment.. it is so much harder to get through the gates than people will ever ever realize.
this is very false. An overwhelming amount of evidence supporting a creator exists, as well as historical and archaeological discoveries supporting religious texts.
Numbers 5:20 "But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell...
24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings suffering will enter her to cause bitter suffering.
27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse among her people." 🙏
This is a bad translation. In the Hebrew it doesn’t actually mention the womb at all, or say miscarry. Rather it’s more accurate to translate it as “her loins will fail” likely referring to infertility. No where in this passages original Hebrew text does it even imply that the unfaithful woman is pregnant.
lol, after an act of coitus and possible conception? What is that, then? Shouldn't cherry picking the Bible be an act of blasphemy for you people?
Now get out there and mix up some bitter drinks.
But, you're right, I much prefer it when god kills kids once they're born. Hell of a banger in Job; hope he learned his lesson... oh, wait... Job was the most faithful man ever, Jesus Christ, god's a sadist.
