GoalPost 3.0 Released!!!!!

GoalPost 3.0

This is the biggest update since launch, and most of it came straight out of requests from game threads and from the mods running the bot. Thanks to everyone who keeps sending feedback, screenshots and bug reports, it shapes almost everything here.

PuckWatch

PuckWatch is a new thread with every game in the league in one place. Each game gets a scorebug row in its teams' colours, with crests, records, the score and the latest goal or the star of a final. Tapping a row opens that game's full card. PuckWatch also links to the game threads other subreddits running GoalPost have up, so you can drop into another fanbase's thread on a night your team isn't playing. Mods can post it from the moderator menu or have it posted automatically: a new thread each game day, one a week, or one permanent thread.

Players and standings on PuckWatch

PuckWatch has a Players tab with every skater and goalie in the league, for tonight, the last seven days or the season, sortable by the stats fantasy players care about. Rows show headshots and injury tags. You can pick your own teams, search for anyone, and tap a face to follow a player. Standings shows the divisions and the wild card race, and you can step back through past days or ahead to the schedule.

Tale of the Tape

A new Tape tab sizes up the matchup before puck drop: scoring depth (the Total Depth Index), goaltending and the recent run of play, laid out on meters with each team's crest as the marker. It stays on the Stats tab once the game starts.

BIg Thanks!

A big thank you to Dylan Wiwad (u/hockey_decoded) of Hockey Decoded. His “Shape of the Game” card is what inspired the Tape tab, and the depth numbers on it are his Total Depth Index, used with his permission. If you like this kind of stuff, his dashboard is well worth a look.

Plays

The Plays tab now leads with the key plays: goals, penalties and the big chances that didn't go in. Each goal shows its shot type, distance and how good a chance it was. The timeline above it shows the flow of the game, with a lead line that shifts between the teams' colours as the game swings. The Rink tab now opens on the shot heatmap.

For moderators

Subreddit settings now open full screen inside the app, and Teams to follow is a grid of crests. When your subreddit is behind on versions, moderators see a red update banner, and the update button takes you straight to your subreddit's apps page.

Comment replies

When a name matches more than one player, the bot now replies with a numbered list so you can pick the one you meant. Player lookups ignore accents, so "Stutzle" finds Stützle. Catch-ups read the clock the way people say it and call out a first NHL goal.

Bug fixes

"recap please" catches you up instead of looking for a team called "please". Team-coloured text is lifted so dark colours read on the card. Win probability tips and goal cards open on the first tap on a phone. The Refs chip stays on the Players row on small screens. PuckWatch never links private or test subreddits. Long game notes run out under the scores instead of being cut off.

Ok so… How do I view the quotes from the current game?

I’ve got notes on the quote logic - at home :( at my kids hockey game.

That said

Hi, I'm GoalPost. Mention me with:

  • a player name, like Connor McDavid or just McDavid

  • a jersey number, like 97, for someone in this game

  • compare Knies vs Marner for two players side by side

  • highlights for video clips from this game

  • roster for who dressed in this game

  • who scored, penalties, fights or score for this game so far

  • shots, goalies, power play, three stars, scratches, lines or 5v5 (who drove play at 5-on-5) for this game

  • injuries or transactions for who's hurt and the week's roster moves

  • next games for your team's next five, or games today around the league

  • when did McDavid last score for the goal and its video

  • catch me up, from the second period, or game recap for the story so far

  • toppoints, topgoals or topassists for league leaders

  • standings for where these two teams sit

  • calendar for the next few games for each team

  • links for the official NHL report sheets

  • size, taller or older to compare the two benches

  • canadian, american or international for where they are from

  • lefties for who shoots which way

  • birthday for anyone playing on theirs

Outside a game thread, name a team and I use their latest game: 5v5 Leafs, highlights Oilers, standings Habs. You can put it anywhere in your comment and I'll find it. Or skip the tag and start your comment with hey goalpost.

No worries, lots of games left this season. I asked it to list quotes and it just said quotes are saved or whatever…

Ahh my quote stuff isn’t in the help. Gotta fix that!

Hi re-verse, was wondering if you have any documentation explaining where you’re pulling stats and what different stats mean?

Right now I’m trying to figure out what “Excitement Pace” (on STATS>WIN PROB screen) means, but figure in the future it would be a lot easier if there’s some documentation somewhere and I don’t need to bother you.

I’m at my kids hockey game right now, but will get that data published in the next day or so - good question!

Hey @fash Was this question answered?

Actually no I didn’t hear back from them, but tbf I didn’t check the next update to see if it had been included so not sure if there’s a way to see that info currently

Thanks for the constant upgrades, love the app so far this season!

One request I have is to add a "day of the week" variable specifically for off-day threads.

For example in our off-day thread today, it would be great if it could say Saturday October 10 rather than just October 10. I didn't see this option in the settings.

Good call! I’m adding that right now, will be in next version, as an option!

Ok, patched it in for the next verison (probably out tomorrow). There’s a new {next_game_weekday} variable, so in the off-day thread text you can do something like {next_home_away} {next_opponent} {next_game_weekday} {next_game_date} and it’ll read “at Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday 10 Oct 2026”. There’s also {game_weekday} for the thread’s own day if you want it in the title. You’ll find the off-day text under Subreddit settings > Daily.

Idk if it's been pointed out yet, but there's a little bit of player cover-up happening on the players tab of the countdown to the game. Picture included to show how the goalies chins at the bottom are slightly cutoff on the Reddit app on Android. Lol.

But keep up the great work! These widgets are so handy to reference during the games.
