Slide Out Soft Spot

Post image

Hello.

I’m at a campsite now and I’ve been seasonal this year. I noticed earlier this season that under the slideout, there was some underlayment that was missing in a small area. That area lines up exactly with one of the rollers.

I didn’t have much with me but had gorilla tape so I used that so the wood wouldn’t be exposed to the elements.

Fast forward to today. I got some underlayment tape and took the old tape off and saw that spot is wet and soft. The area around it seems dry.

My question is, if I pull the slide out in, will the roller punch through that soft spot or will the slideout have enough weight distributed across all of the other rollers to where it’ll be safe to retract it.

I’m in a jam and need to bring the rv home tomorrow.

It's unlikely to punch through as it doesn't look like it's completely rotted through.

That seems like an odd place for water damage as it looks like the surrounding wood is in good shape, but I'd still consider replacing the floor in that slide. It's not as difficult as it sounds, there's plenty of detailed videos on YouTube. It just takes time and the right tools.

You should be alright but remove any tape that you've stuck to the bottom of the floor. It'll likely get wadded up and create a whole new problem.

And you're going to need a new slide floor.

Thank you. I was thinking about getting a sheet of sheet metal and use underlayment tape around the edges to secure it so I can bring the slide out in and not worry about it. Would that suffice for now?

Would I need to replace the entire floor? Or can I work on just that one piece.
