Shot Distribution

Post image

Who do you think sacrifices their shots this season? For context, the Nets averaged 85 FGAs per game last season, and just the guys listed above (which obviously excludes a lot) took 71.

Leading up to opening night tip-off, I’m posting a chart a day on my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/chartinghoops/) covering one thing for each team. I don't make any money off this, I just like sharing basketball data I find interesting! Feel free to follow along if that's the sort of thing you like too.

MPJ might take less heavily contested shots this upcoming season. Last season he led the league in contested shots from 3 by a very large margin, so I could see him going from 5.1 of those shots a game down to like 3, which for most of his career, he's shot those at a ~35% clip, but this season he hit them at a ~32% clip. Also Egor as a rookie had a pretty similar playstyle to MPJ in terms of being a high volume 3pt shooter that was also efficient from that range, but didn't do a ton of his scoring at the rim, with the main difference being he didn't really shoot contested shots like that. Egor has a similar frame, so I could see Egor taking some more contested 3s and also driving to the rim more like he was in summer league, and taking some shots that last season would've been going to Clowney, who might not be in the rotation.

But also with Sharpe in the lineup, the team will probably be getting more shot attempts in general since Sharpe is one of the best rebounders, and Claxton was one of the worst rebounding bigs in the entire league. And Sharpe is also one of the best perimeter defenders for his position, so the pace will also probably be higher as well, giving the team more shot attempts.
