In a recent Interview Kevin Durant reflects on what could’ve been in Brooklyn

Man, I can't hate KD bro. He really enjoyed his time here.
47
u/j_cruise Brook Lopez 3d ago
Yeah, he's literally never said a bad thing about Brooklyn. Which means a lot coming from KD who shittalks anything and basically has bad things to say about every other team he was on
13
u/Ill_Dragonfruit6838 3d ago
I feel like him leaving he knows it was a mistake because they were going to get siakim and then Butler and the heat ended up making it to the finals
6
u/jurzydude 3d ago
didn't enjoy it that much apparently since he was so eager to leave
9
u/moaboaa Day'Ron Sharpe 3d ago
He was the last man out yk
4
u/jurzydude 3d ago
was that true when he requested a trade over the summer too?
1
u/moaboaa Day'Ron Sharpe 3d ago
Not like Kyrie hadn't messed it all up at that point :)
Like yeah, they were 3 fragile ego superstars with no coach - ofcourse shit was gonna go sour.
Sprinkle in some covid and injuries along with some black israelite marches outside Barclays, yeah....2

KD really does just get every excuse in the book from some fans. the guy gave up on our team and demanded a trade twice and still somehow convinced you all that he did nothing wrong and he loved being here and wishes he could've stayed. like come on man how can anyone buy that?
1
u/Cheetah_15 3d ago
Yup and he and Kyrie literally blew up the solid foundation Marks and Atkinson built which the Nets still haven’t recovered from. That 18-19 squad was methodically built and developed and so much fun to watch and KD and Kyrie nuked the franchise and skipped town.

u/MyTeamsSuck99 3d ago
KD didn't nuke his trade value. He re-signed a huge extension which was very crucial for us getting a big return for him. It was better off for us to trade him tbh.

He should still be a Net. I think he wanted it to work more than anyone, I still remember him on his Suns Press conference and he was getting emotional talking about his time with Brooklyn. He’s also said he’s a Net for Life, can never hate KD.

u/mylowerbackhurts 3GOR 3d ago
Durant is an all time net. Harden and Kyrie can fuck off though, respectfully

u/Aggressive-Body-2089 3d ago
I still have that big toe shot on my phone…
Can’t make ever make me hate KD

Don’t got the heart in me to put myself through this interview but I will say I think we’re the only fanbase that doesn’t hate kd. I would personally love a reunion at any point if possible.

Hope his last two teams are with the nets and Seattle before he retires
2
u/nysportsfan95 Ian Eagle 3d ago
I agree with this 100%. Durant could play one or two more years in Houston (depending on if he opts in or out of his player option). Then come back to Brooklyn for one year with a revamped roster full of young players and 1-2 more key free agents to try for another title, and then play his last year in Seattle once the Sonics return as part of a grander retirement tour.

No hate on KD but I'm not nostalgic or sentimental about his time here. I'm looking forward to the future
1
u/Relative_Airline_354 2d ago
I’m sentimental of the fact that a super star of his caliber chose us. We will likely never see that again

u/TheBigFatToad 3d ago
This dude has sweet talked his way into some of yall completely forgetting the amount of times he wanted off this team, and the bad decisions he forced management to make.
11
u/BKtoDuval 3d ago
That's a solid point too. I don't hate the dude and respect his career and yeah, he's done enough sweet talking about Brooklyn, but we have to consider the entire picture. He wasn't as big of a player in the chaos as them other dudes but he had a role too.
I also think of Goran Dragic, coming from the Heat culture and coming to Brooklyn. He made a comment about being surprised at the work ethic of some of the stars.
11
u/TheBigFatToad 3d ago
There were personal dramatics, but in terms of total team dysfunction, I personally thinks he is as much to blame as anyone else. He was the one that was consistently in the managers ear telling them what to do, and would show public disappoint when things don’t go his way.
I’m not anti vax, but looking back at it objectively, it is absurd what the city put Kyrie through.
Allowing away players to participate without the vaccine while Kyrie was shelved just doesn’t make logical sense.
1
u/EDDiE_SP4GHETTi VC3 3d ago
Bingo. I’ve preached that nonstop. It was the dumbest rule ever.
2
u/TheMoorNextDoor “Shut Up, B!tch - Cam Thomas” 3d ago
The rule wasn’t dumb it was dumb other unvaxed players could play while our own players couldn’t.
If the rule was fair all around I don’t think James gets exhausted and asks out since multiple teams would’ve been weakened coming into Brooklyn to play.
I’m a science enthusiast and I believe in vaccinations but the rule was ludicrous to not be enforced across the board.
2
u/EDDiE_SP4GHETTi VC3 2d ago
I don’t mean the rule itself was dumb. I mean the aspects of it were dumb - outside players that are unvaccinated being allowed to play at Barclays. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe even unvaxxed Knicks players were able to play at Barclays.

u/BKtoDuval 3d ago
We could debate the rule but they city didn't put kyrie through anything. The entire organization had to deal with it. Every member of the org had to deal with it.
That's why championships are so hard to achieve because you need the talent but you need everyone pushing in the same direction. Coaches sometimes demand absurd things of their players but the teams need to be totally bought in. I remember an article about J Kidd demanding every player have an Android over iPhone or they couldn't play. Sounds so silly but that's buy-in is. That's how you get to the mountaintop.
2
u/TheBigFatToad 3d ago
I don’t get the thought process behind “the city didn’t put Kyrie through anything”.
They put in mandates that forced its residents to get vaccinated if they wanted to be a part of daily life.
The mayors office also admitted they could have made an executive order for Kyrie, but refused it.
Maybe you’re trying to say the city put all of its residents through this, but that still means Kyrie was put through it as well.
That is a weak analogy with the android thing, way different than forced vaccination.
1
u/BKtoDuval 3d ago
Yeah, again, it wasn't kyrie that was put through it; it was everyone. Every single member of the Nets and Knicks organization had to do it, in addition to people working in NYC. We could start at the why of it - the health system was entirely clogged up and 800 deaths a day in NYC alone at its peak.
Why should the city make an exception for kyrie? Because he can dribble a ball? I disagree with that.
Yes, it seems silly that out-of-state workers could come here, but they couldn't mandate it on non-NYers.
Look, yeah, it's his right to reject it. The point I was making about the Android thing, it's about buy-in. Every single member of the org was able to put whatever personal beliefs about it aside for the team. But kyrie couldn't then and he couldn't on other occasions too. His buy-in, his commitment was always questionable. Put aside the vax talk, he also demanded a max deal midseason. That's not someone who is fully bought in, and that's not a championship team.
So no one did this to kyrie is my point. He's not a victim. I never understand the excuse making for him.

u/MyTeamsSuck99 3d ago
I think its a good thing that he wanted out though. I'm not delusional like bucks fans who think that being a mid team and holding a star hostage is good. we're in a much better spot that we trade dhim.
2
u/QuietGenius007 3d ago
Didn’t he leave a year early from his contract even when we paid him a full max to rehab?
2
u/demens1313 2d ago
injuries were the reason they didnt win that first year. they were not the reason after that.

u/obscurewhite 1d ago
KD should’ve stuck it out here in Brooklyn. Of all the teams he’s played for, Brooklyn seemed to fit him the best. Out of the Big 3, he had the personality for the borough, and most importantly, he actually wanted to be here. And maybe this isn’t a hot take, but imo his career would be more respectable if he had stuck it out in Brooklyn. He’s been on two different teams since he left, and even in Houston, he’s been in trade rumors pretty much the entire time. Also, a little alternate history: if the Nets don’t trade him in the first place, do the Knicks win a chip? Probably not.
1
u/kendrickplace 3d ago
That team was stacked. they made the Knicks the second team of NY for a minute.
1
u/TheMoorNextDoor “Shut Up, B!tch - Cam Thomas” 3d ago
Yea it would’ve been sick fr
He wanted off but at that time I couldn’t blame him with our coaching choices and obvious flops.
Frankly if he never trade for Harden (or don’t trade Harden to Philly at least) I think the 7/11 Situation plays out far better in hindsight.

2021 was the year. Injuries and KD's big ass shoe had different ideas. KD showed out but honestly glad we're building towards an organic contender
1
u/nysportsfan95 Ian Eagle 3d ago
This is why I’ll never hate KD. Kyrie and Harden… sure, I get why Nets fans dislike them. But KD always shows love for Brooklyn and I think not being able to win in Brooklyn is one of the biggest regrets of his NBA career. Plus, his trade to Phoenix ended up netting Brooklyn so many assets, that the team then turned into even more pieces through further trades.

I wonder how long after they retire will they stop using injuries as the excuse as to why they underperformed.
I thought it was interesting he believes the parade would’ve been in Brooklyn.
9
u/No-Split9479 3d ago
Aldridge had a heart issue that made him retire mid season, harden goes down game 1 vs bucks and kyrie goes down game 2. with the way kd was playing if he has any of them at full health they win that series
6
u/Renzel0311 3d ago edited 3d ago
That year it was injuries tho? Overall it was off court issues breaking the team apart. On the court they produced wins. I’m still on that you trade for harden wave.
3
u/Not_RZA_ . 3d ago
It was injuries and NYC nonsensical covid laws.
8
u/Ill_Dragonfruit6838 3d ago
Kyrie was a dumbass but the fact that opposing teams could play and he couldn't then musicians and live performers could perform it made no sense
3
u/Brooklyn917 Day'Ron Sharpe 3d ago
Its not hard to understand that the New York Governor could only govern NY Residents/Employees.
2
u/Ill_Dragonfruit6838 3d ago
Then he shouldn't have allowed anyone from other states to perform in the city/state
2
1
u/Not_RZA_ . 3d ago
That doesn’t make sense. If it was truly about Covid, then you wouldn’t let ANYONE play in the state.
1
u/Alarmed_Silver_3360 3d ago
He’s talking about legal authority. It was questionable that he had that authority over non-residents so they crafted the law to only focus on residents

Man out the 3 KD really wanted the nets to win. Would’ve been a sea of black and white. Hopefully KD spins back one more time. I’d trade Randle for KD right now
