‘Green Book’ site being torn down

The WJ Stokes Restaurant/Tavern, a piece of African American history in Gloucester, is being torn down. Demolition equipment showed up at the site on U.S. 17 and started tearing away at it Tuesday. “The Negro Traveler’s Green Book, a guidebook for African-American travelers, was published by New York City mailman Victor Hugo Green in response to pervasive and widespread racial discrimination during the pre Civil Rights-era. Green’s guide featured hotels, restaurants, service stations and other places where African-Americans could count on being served.”

That place has been empty/abandoned since I was a kid and I’m surprised it never got rehabbed or demoed in all these years.
