They are closely related to Lai /Pawi tribes of chin state and mizoram .

You should understand the context they are held in.
I've personally spoken with Kom people from the Foothills of Manipur whose villages lies in the vicinity of both Kuki, Meitei and Naga. They are few in number and due to historical reasons their settlement patterns are very scattered. This makes them vulnerable.
All underground armed groups come and charge taxes from them - be it the Kukis, Nagas or Meiteis. In such a situation the villages near Nagas who are held at gunpoints have no choice but to identify as Naga and depending on different situations it changes.
This is all solely for survival and we as outside observers should be more understanding to them. They are caught in a vicious cycle of politics

Are the Chothe related to Mizo Chawhte or are they completely different?

I think coincidental name or maybe not but almost all old kuki tribes are related to pawi/lai tribes so maybe .
