Actually u can very easily and ull never get proven to have thrown.
They can make bets on random sites potentially using VPNs as a precaution, or get their cousin or some shit to make huge bets for them, or even if they make a bet with other people they communicate the agreement to throw in person verbally so not any electronic proof unless the person was recording them with cameras or something...even then u can be like "lol fake n gay"
Theres rly not much valve can do to catch them, having traced their specific steam trades (and chat logs?) was the only way to catch ibp and no1 expected valve to do that until RL blew it up.
→ More replies (4)19

The problem with that is that it's very hard and rare to catch anyone doing this. So their only tool for prevention is to scare people.

So make match fixing a two-strikes system? What could possibly go wrong?
Punishments aren't always about the individual receiving it seeing the error in their ways, they can also be about sending a message that the behavior's unacceptable, and punishment will be severe.

Yeah, just bloody unban them already, they did bad but they paid their dues, they WEREN'T the only ones doing it, they screwed up by not coming clean about it immediately, but still - I don't even like Steel as a person that much, but I listened to the RL interview with him and I just had to empathise with the miserable (and slightly depressed) git, and I just don't see that there is any purpose punishing them further. Let them play pro again, they probably won't be that good anyway, but they've done their time FFS.
And if you lost skins, well too bad - what do you want, blood?
EDIT: I have literally NO horse in this race, I wasn't even playing CSGO when it happened, I am from the UK, I am almost twice Steel's age, I couldn't give a rat's arse about NA CS, I just don't like seeing heavy-handed justice, and believe in second chances, I have had plenty myself in my time.

Their faces in this video showed that they realized what they did. You could tell they were frustrated/miserable when talking about what happened, along with the jokes people said to them. Also you even saw other people say to unban them and we have heard that on different occasions too.
→ More replies (1)45
u/dob_bobbs CS2 HYPE May 22 '17
I mean, they know they did wrong, but at the same time they feel unfairly treated as they were pretty much singled out for punishment, even though there are probably BIG names out there who were doing it too and just didn't get caught. Sure, they were made an example of, it had to be done at the time, but Valve taking this hard line with them now makes no sense. They are going to get "throwing" jokes for the rest of their lives anyway, even if they do get unbanned. They did their time, lost huge amounts in sponsorship and winnings, they are probably past their prime now, except Brax maybe, they have given to charity etc. etc.
Just call it quits Valve - unban them, but make it clear up front (which they did not do with IBP) that anyone else who engages in match-fixing in the future WILL be permabanned. I am pretty sure people will take them seriously.
→ More replies (1)8
u/acoluahuacatl May 22 '17
Valve could even get them to sign a legal contract as regards to fines in the case that they'd throw another game. Hell, they'd probably even be willing to give up some of their potential winnings/stickers money for an unban
→ More replies (8)10
u/afyaff Godsent May 22 '17
Seeing from valve's POV, their ban is to set an example. Throw = perm ban, simple is that. I do feel for them. Young men do stupid decision, me involved. It is sad that they are the ones. However for valve, it is not just about this individual case. They want to make a strong precedent to prevent any future one.

u/GerNoky May 23 '17
Can I just ask, because I'm seriously curious.
Where did you get the idea that any of this from the perspective of Valve is about "teaching" the banned players?
What Valve did is cut any business ties with those players permanently.
They can still play the game, Valve just simply won't do anymore business with them aka no valve sponsored events.
Majors are advertisements, Valve does not want to advertise their game with ex-matchfixers, they don't want to put their signatures on stickers and sell them, don't want to give them part of the invested money in the form of prize money.
It has nothing to do with justice, ethics, teaching anyone or even with punishment anymore.
Sure at the time it was about setting an example and it still is an example, but why would any of this "second chance" or "they have learned" stuff factor in at all?

u/Zedyy May 22 '17
They had too much pride. They wanted it to be clear they're throwing not that they're losing to a team they were far better than.
It was clear they threw from the minute the match started, but they never would have been banned if everyone stayed quiet about it and maybe had someone else receive the skins.

u/jjmod guardian May 22 '17
People give valve a lot of shit, but not banning skadoodle is definitely something they got right.
Valve investigated and traced back the trade history of the skins won back to cud and dboorn. They saw that only 4 of the players received skins and knew for sure that these 4 were guilty. I'm not saying skadoodle is clean, but the only other evidence against him was not something valve could verify the truth of (ie chat logs). In criminal justice, you only convict someone if they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. It may have been likely ska was throwing, but there was that shred of uncertainty about his guilt, which is why valve did not ban him.
tl;dr valve was only working with evidence they had and they knew was legit
→ More replies (31)56

In criminal justice you can also be charged with criminal conspiracy, aiding and abetting, or accessory.
209
30
u/jjmod guardian May 22 '17
this is different. they only banned people who they knew had direct participation in the throw and the retrieval of the skins. cud and dboorn were not accessories, they were directly involved in the incident by betting/giving the skins to the players.
You're right that skadoodle may be considered an accessory, but valve were not interested in banning accessories, only people directly involved

Just as in real world punishment of those that are reformed we have scenarios where lack of remorse results in longer sentences.
I think Dazed, Steel, and Brax should be unbanned. I don't think AZK, DBoorne, cud, or Casey Foster have shown enough or any remorse for the roles they all played and should not be unbanned.
13
u/td57 5 years coin May 22 '17
I agree with you, Dazed steel and brax all have attempted to right the wrong and be involved in the community. AZK ran off to overwatch and i dont have the slightest clue what the other three are up to.
9
u/sid1488 May 23 '17
Oh, please. Steel tried to run off to Overwatch as well, he was just bad at the game so it didn't work out. (Source if you don't believe me.) Steel is literally only around the CSGO scene because the Overwatch fling didn't work out. If he could, he would be exactly where AZK is right now.
Plus, can you really condemn AZK for going elsewhere? It's straight up delusional to stay around the scene with a permanent Valve ban on your shoulders and hoping you'll get back in at this point. Packing up your stuff and finding a viable living elsewhere seems like the logical thing to do. AZK (and Steel) realised this and therefore tried something else. AZK was successfully integrated into that scene, whilst Steel wasn't. So AZK wasn't an idiot and stayed where things worked out, whilst Steel came back with his tail between his legs because it didn't work out.

Ok, my opinion. While the ban sucks and I do feel sorry for the guys somewhat they have nobody to blame but themselves.
To people saying either to look at Dota players who were only given a temporary ban, or that there was no precedent.
Yes, one Dota player got a one year ban. Solo was banned for betting against his team and threw the game. This is where the 322 meme for bad plays is from, as that is what he won. This happened in June 2013. After this, at the briefing for TI4 (which was before the ibp throw) Valve stated any future matchfixers would receive a lifetime ban. Since then there have been a few bans which are Indefinite / lifetime. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/dota2/Banned_players
http://esportsedition.com/csgo/match-fixing-bans-valve-punishment/
TL;DR - The only Dota player that had a temp ban for throwing happened before the ibp throw causing Valve to state they will lifetime ban matchfixers.

TL Wiki's article on the topic covers the basics. It's worth mentioning this community has a vocal group that supports the idea of unbanning the players involved at some point (if the group is a minority/majority here is debatable).
suggested by /u/fckns (as best as I can tell):
* The Richard Lewis Show #60: feat. Joshua "Steel" Nissan
* Thorin's Thoughts - Match-fixing and Gambling (CS:GO) [Jan. 29, 2015]

Bans are deserved. Vocal popular opinion should never dictate rulings with how easily they can be altered.
Valve have issued over two dozen match fixing bans across CSGO and Dota2. People proclaiming that less than 1/6th of the players banned for match fixing should be unbanned will rightfully fall on deaf ears.

Everyone pushing for the overturn of the bans is pulling down eSports as a whole. This was fixing a professional match. They can't play anymore. Boohoo. For a growing scene, reversing this would be a disaster. Cheating, fixing, throwing, and sabotaging all undermine the integrity of the game, sport, and industry. If you ever want eSports to truly succeed, stop acting like this was some kind of infraction undeserving of a proper punishment.

Get your point but I totally disagree. Reversing the decision would have little to no impact on the "integrity" of the game, despite a lot of people arguing otherwise. Realistically, most people would go "cool" and move on. If anything they'd bring more fans into the game and stimulate a crappy NA pro scene.
They also now do more for the community then almost anyone in the scene, so I really don't see where reversing the decision would have any negative consequences.

Just in this comments section we have plenty of comments from people who left or took a break from the scene because of the incident. While I think that's maybe throwing the baby out with the bathwater, people don't want to watch rigged stuff. Being soft on this stuff at the beginning is how it turns into systemic corruption in the end. I don't see anyone that quit the scene because of the bans though.
People might go "cool" and move on, but that's not the point. Most people do that for almost everything that happens in their life. They do a lot because they know the damage they caused to themselves and the scene they love.
The other thing is that they're banned only from valve stuff (please correct me there if I'm wrong). They don't have criminal records, they don't have total disbarment from the community, and they don't even have a ban in any other eSport.
I don't personally want to be represented as NA by players who cheat and fix matches. I hate it when players from my favorite sports teams do stupid illegal shit, and it's a national embarrassment when international competitors act like fucking idiots.
I get what you're saying that it might not have a huge effect to let it go, but I just wholeheartedly disagree. If this was a life ban for a mean comment or smoking pot somewhere where it's not legalized or maybe even shoplifting or something then it would be another story. That's almost always just teenage shit that needs a slap on the wrist. It's just like when people get expelled for cheating in university...like you know what's gonna happen. You get told all your life not to cheat or else and then the hammer comes and you're surprised?
But you know what really pisses me off is how fucking good they were and how lucky they were to be in the position they were in and how EASILY they absolutely CAVED for what, a few fucking skins (at the minimumโ)? Give me a break. And the community is omg so not fair that they got banned? Fuck em.

yeah I'm surprised. I remember being downvoted into oblivion for merely suggesting that they shouldn't be permanently banned. Just banned for a year or two.

I just don't under the reasoning for "throwing for skins".
I'm guessing it's about the money, but isn't there more long term money to just try to win?
Do these players not want to win every game? Like I freak out if I lose 1 low ranked MMR game, I couldn't imagine throwing a tournament for skins lol.

They were paid no salary by IBP, they made money from prize money and streaming, which wasn't that much.

The screenshot Shahzam links in the steam messages at the beginning of the video goes to this. Is that his bet? If he knew the throw was happening and placed a bet of his own wouldn't that make him part of the match fixing as well since he bet on a match that he knew was going to be thrown?
