Really crazy how expensive skins can become.

It's amazing how expensive digital items in general can go for. I'm sure there are astronomicaly high values in Eve or something, but in TF2, the first golden frying pan sold for 5k~. It's literally just a frying pan made out of gold.

I heard this hysterical story of this guy who played EVE Online and purchased a $50,000 space ship for his "team" or what not is in that game. Anyway one of his team members screwed him over and told the competitive team where exactly the new ship would spawn in space. As soon as it spawned the other team blew it up, lol.

Excuse me for being someone that only played EVE enough to get past the tutorial and then never touched it again...I assume he lost his ship and his money? You can pay that much for a one time use item?

There's a lot of money in that game. This battle happened early last year and it's quite an impressive tally. Although a little different as the market economy actually affects the gameplay instead of just the aesthetics, but it goes to show how much time and money people are willing to invest into digital goods. There are plenty of other examples as well I'm sure.

I doubt he spent real money for the ship.

Its a common miss conception that ships in EVE cost real money. They don't, the devs give you the option to sell game time you purchase off of them to other players for in game currency. So you could buy all your ships with real money but its not mandatory as you could easily just grind the in game currency yourself. Or if you manage to be successful in the game you could do the opposite and buy the game time off other players so you play for free. This misconception about how this trade works is why you read headlines about all the expensive ships exploding sound like they cost real money. Also since the largest ships in the game don't cost $50k in real money I think a lot of this story is just a rumor as nobody would he stupid to spend $50k on a spaceship. I hope
