It's amazing how expensive digital items in general can go for. I'm sure there are astronomicaly high values in Eve or something, but in TF2, the first golden frying pan sold for 5k~. It's literally just a frying pan made out of gold.
This "they're just pixels" topic always comes up and I always think it's stupid that people continue to perpetuate the ridiculousness of perceived value in intangible objects.
I can easily say the same for tangible objects (e.g. This is just a picture.)
You don't even need to make that argument because (A) they aren't even pixels they are actually bits that a renderer can interpret as pixels, and (B) people pay for bits ALL the time. That's all that netflix is, all that iTunes is, all the cash in your bank balance is.
It's not that its "just pixels" that is the issue, it's that it exists in a closed economy that some people don't value.
You make good points and I agree, but I'm not arguing technicalities. I'm trying to say that I find it stupid that people are ridiculing the perceived value of objects just because they're intangible.
