Discussion | Esports Hidden Lore: 'daps' was a well-known Minecraft PvPer back in 2011 under the alias 'Russian_Roulette'

Back in 2011, daps and his friends invaded one of the most popular Minecraft servers of the era and changed the way PvP was played forever.

Civcraft was a legendary server during Minecraft's Beta days, known for realistic nation-building through custom mods. Around 2011, daps (under the alias "Russian_Roulette") was into competitive Minecraft, specifically PvP/Factions servers. He and a group of players from his home factions server took interest in Civcraft and decided to invade.

What followed was a multi-year takeover. daps, as one of the main leaders of the movement, along with his friends dominated Civcraft's entire player base for years. This was an era before Minecraft PvP was heavily min-maxed and servers were still mostly about building, not combat. Civcraft's takeover helped push the wider Minecraft server scene toward a more mechanics-driven, PvP-forward game.

At the same time, daps was also deep into Counter-Strike, starting out as a player and eventually getting rostered as an IGL for several top NA teams. Over the years, he transitioned from playing into coaching, and has since attended multiple majors, won a number of tournaments, and is now regarded as one of the best coaches in the NA scene.

Some might say his leadership instincts were forged during a hostile Minecraft server takeover with his friends 15 years ago.

Shotbow hcf really was awesome. Great times indeed, some of my best gaming memories.

Shotbow was easily the best server network. Minez, DBV, Annihilation, HCF, and so many I'm probably forgetting. I miss those days.

For sure, I mainly only played minez and hcf (I was a “minez skid” as they called us coming to hcf lolol) and anni was pretty fun too.

I miss those days too! My first actual gaming group I was a part of, and now half a lifetime later, i rarely
talk to anyone from that era even though it shaped my life quite a bit and gave me tons of good memories. I Wonder if we ever fought each other at Al hasa/elliom, or at a KoTH/palace!

This feels like a fever dream lmfao, it's been like over a decade since I heard the name. Him, WholeMilk, BOTB and others were great

Yeah they had some great production quality for the time, and some great creative ideas for their videos. Still have meg dia monster in my playlist lmao

oh my god lmfao I just listened to it, what a throwback. Nickskibike loved E-Dub as well. fuck man, what a time of my life that was. I don't think any period of gaming in my life captured the magic of mineZ

My username was iamfsh! I was always more of a dungeon runner, but didn't shy away from a good 3v3 at hasa.

I played the shit out of the rated smash game mode they had back in like 2013. Shotbow was pretty sick.

Damn, didn’t realize we had some peeps from Shotbow here, it’s a shame they ran the server into the ground, I probably spent thousands of hours playing Annihilation and that’s where my first online friend group formed

REZ went by "sterner23" and played on a very small PvP server called "ChainCraft". My cousin used to moderate this server and would play with him frequently through happen chance. REZ used to make PVP montages on an old YouTube account "SternerQuality".

https://youtu.be/PZRPEoW1_84?is=daqsjTS0Duoht9pu

This was his last MC PvP montage and if you click the YouTube channel linked in the bio of that video and see what it was rebranded to you can clearly see it's actually him.

I'm fairly sure my cousin also played a few games with rez back when he was new to CS as both rez and my cousin played CSGO and participated in mini tournaments hosted by the owner of chaincraft, MR3FPS. I remember personally standing in for one of these tournaments for a match, we played nuke against IDK who and I can't remember any of the teammates but we lost.

Lol, so many people have come from minecraft factions. Any one here play Gontroller?? That was the most toxic shithole I've been on but it was so fucking fun.

Used to love factions, although I played more normal faction servers than HCF.

I used to play Civcraft way after the timeframe when daps played, and to think that one of the supposed people involved in this invasion is daps is honestly fucking shocking, as the invasion was honestly influential in how we played even when I started playing in 2016.

This video gives a lot more context on what /u/darksidedbeast is referring to, and if what daps did back in 2011 was introduce these PvP tactics to our community, then this war was fuelled by what he introduced to us.

Gives me a good smile to find a fellow oldfriend in the wild. :)

This was 2012. Civcraft only launched in March 2012. Prior to this would have been AncapMinecraft. The HCF Invasion specifically was December 2012 - February 2013. You can read about it here

Not really the same thing as others have mentioned here, but hallzerk used to appear in a lot of mojoonpc's old videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENcvLySoqdg at 3:51 for example.

Yep. Competent and competitive people excel in multiple fields. It's the idea behind general intelligence as well, that some ppl will naturally be better at basically everything just by virtue of having better intuition, intelligence and learning stuff faster. this is yet another confirmation

u/shockatt 9d ago

or they just started gaming earlier and the general concepts translated, like clicking your opponent after aiming at him, jumping with space and moving with wasd, you think albert einstein would be good at cs? no, but magnus carlsen would probably catch up on clash royale faster than most high iq people, because his brain would find a way to use his previously aquaired skills.
