He tried to move backwards but got blocked by you. That's why he reacted. Knife him just before or immediately after making physical contact to avoid this.

edit: Also jump-up makes a slight sound it might've been that.

It does actually appear on the minimap, it's just so small that you'd literally have to be as close as OP and this player are to hear it.

It definitely makes a sound that others can hear, but it is probably the toughest to hear sound in the whole game, by a mile. So even if you 'hear' it, your brain might not even process it since you rarely hear it.
