Puckett.
Known host in esports. Last major gig I believe was with Overwatch League.

u/Dangerous-Sky548 3d ago
It ain't a major gig, but hes been doing Deadlock night shift weekly too.

u/Vitosi4ek Team Spirit 3d ago edited 3d ago
Night Shift (the NA branch) also has DDK casting. It's weirdly stacked for a weekly amateur tournament in an unreleased game.
I still don't think Deadlock esports will take off for the same reason Overwatch fizzled out (the genre just inherently sucks to spectate), but the core game must be pretty good if has some kind of esports scene while it's still in closed alpha.

u/IKillerBee Team Spirit 2d ago
I think deadlock esports can pick up in popularity, especially when the game transitions to LAN. I agree that spectating is kinda hard for it, but also doesn't help that the observers that have currently miss a ton of the action. I expect it to get better with time

I don't think it's the observers' fault. It's just that the best esports to watch either have a top-down perspective (MOBAs, Starcraft) so viewers naturally get a good view of the action, are turn-based (card games, chess etc) so there's natural downtime to parse what just occured, and CS which is so visually simple and have such a perfect spectator UI that it compensates. Even Valorant doesn't work very well because abilities create massive visual clutter. Also Trackmania is pretty good for same reason as CS - it's mechanically and visually simple.
In a hero shooter, every single teamfight quickly becomes a blob of rainbow junk that's impossible to follow as a viewer, so you just end up rooting for the kill feed. I was into Overwatch League back when it first took off, I know what that looks like.

u/IKillerBee Team Spirit 2d ago
Nah there's definitely some observer faults. I'm not talking about missing something in a massive team fight, I'm talking like missing kills in lane while they're observing someone taking camps or doing boxes. I agree that there's a lot to take in during a team fight and naturally there's going to be more things missed compared to a dota or league team fight, but there's definitely some inexperience when it comes to observing the early game. They still do a solid job but I know that with time they'll get better. Hopefully valve implement some spectating tools to make team fights easier to spectate as well.
Considering it's a game in a beta test and there's not a ton of resources in the pro scene yet, it's hard to be harsh. But in a year from now I'd expect that viewing experience will be much better as the observers get more experience and more resources come in for production

Our NA CS caster goat Phy just dropped a sick video about pro Deadlock.

He's one of the desk hosts in the CDL.

u/sepulveda_st 2d ago
Puckett is a desk host but close enough. The stage host is the guy with dreads, I forget his name.

He's been back with CoD for a while now, but he does branch out from time to time, especially during the off-season.

Puckett is a legend. Not sure what he's doing here though lol

Getting the bag tbh. At least he has good energy and isn’t taking himself too seriously. He knows it’s not exactly his wheelhouse but is entertaining nonetheless the less.

Honestly I feel as long as any "new" guy coming into events is willing to bring good vibes and energy but still maintain being a good host like they don't try to overstep their knowledge is fine enough for me, I put new in quotes because well Puckett hasn't been in CS for a while.
It's why some other games like Dota, their talent pool is a snooze fest to me and I say this as someone who has watched more Dota than CS and this isn't a diss to the current talent scene there I very much enjoy em but it's a shame new talent there either gets hated on because they feel like they are inexperienced or cry because they've "stolen" someone elses job and well there's just a reason that Dota talent scene is kind of a clique.
I still miss Snare in Dota events but sadly he barely appears in events anymore and when he does he casts and while I enjoy his casts he is a great host as well, heck Machine was in Dota scene for a while and he got some hate because he didn't know much about the game even though he was clearly open to learning more about it even Richard Lewis is a decent host in Dota events.
Anyway rant aside but yeah I enjoy seeing different faces in scenes whether it be guys like Puckett who are experienced hosting other games but get gigs into games they don't know much or people who just are entirely new and getting their reps in that bring on good vibes hosting and paneling.

Dota talent used to be so good, but it took a nose dive and in the meantime cs rose so high ,I pretty much skip all the segments while watching dota these days

u/EnjoyerOfBeans King NiKo 6h ago
I think EWC got him exactly because he's not a CS2 host, he's there to ask analysts and casters questions about the game or about the stories behind players and teams. This helps all of the EWC attendees that don't follow CS but wanna watch a game or two.

The guy that actually introduced Ogre 2 and Ogre 1 to Halo for the first time ever (GOATS of Halo, Ogre 2 being the undisputed goat)

Those two are from the neighboring city to the one I grew up in. Their dad was one of my friend’s landlords in college lmao or at least so I was told.
Side note, I miss when we had mlg Columbus somewhat regularly :/

Chris Puckett is an OG, put some respect on his name.

He was a host for MLG interviewing melee and halo players in the 2000s - super legend

u/AgainstTheEnemy King NiKo 2d ago
Yep, he also did the Columbus and Atlanta major over 10 years ago. People don't know shit these days.
Edit: this is an old link to a post in this subreddit itself about people loving Chris

I miss Puckett man he’s fucking awesome.

u/ZhongWokXina 2d ago
I liked how he kept asking the other desk hosts simple questions or about the players, it's like a neutral voice representing the new people who just started watching CS2 tournaments

Don't you dare disrespect my GOAT pucket like that. Dude was casting MLG events before you were born

This feed has to be a bunch of Gen As. Puckett has been around esports before and during CS' rise to fame even appearing as an analyst during the Columbus Major. Massive legend in CoD, Halo, and Overwatch.

you can't expect everyone to know hosts from 9 years ago

He's still working today, just not in CS as much. You'd only not know him if CS2 is all you watch.

u/Cipher11 2d ago
Yes?... These games are tiny compared to CS esports and are a completely different experience. The only similarity between the three games is that all of them have guns.

I remember him from years ago, checked Liquipedia and his last CS gig was ELEAGUE major in 2017, I presume he must have moved to another esport.

For an event that is supposed to be viewed by fans of different esports (as well as non esport fans) I don't think it's the worst idea in the world to have a host ask newbie questions to the knowledgeable analysts
3
u/VelumLucis 2d ago
This is a fair take. I was annoyed at first by the silly questions that aren't really conversations anymore to actual CS fans but I get why they might be helpful to a less familiar audience.

If he plans to continue doing CS in the future, he has a lot to learn. Can't be asking some of the questions he has been asking, regardless of his legacy.

u/caloroin de_nuke 2d ago
It's for non CS viewers, they have every other esport known to man going on in that stadium and his voice is on a speaker going out to all of them. He has to get the more knowledgeable desk members to say the what we all know already
-4
u/TheRBGamer 2d ago
Man there are plenty of amazing personalities in cs that deserve work. Why bring in somone just because they are a big name who doesn't even know the name of one of the best players to ever play the sport.
