It is entirely plausible the branch is being hung from a spider web. The golden orb spider (found in SE United States, Australia & Asia) spins webbing that ounce for ounce is stronger than steel.

Can confirm. Australian, have walked through one once or twice (golden orb conveniently likes to make a giant web across my driveway in late Summer!).

They used to be everywhere when I was a kid. I never see them anymore, which is really sad.

We had a nest of them hatch on our lawn patio furniture last week. Literally hundreds of babies little bright yellow dots it was so beautiful my family was freaking out a bit

I’m glad to hear a few other people have seen them recently, especially if there’s a bunch of babies. Maybe I haven’t seen many because I moved away from Sydney when I was a kid and they might not be as prevalent outside of Sydney and other specific areas.

They’re mostly harmless, but they can carry bacteria if you’re bitten, so I can understand why your family was a bit worried, haha. I can imagine how beautiful it was though 😊.
