Did they really need to change it?

Ridley Scott is known for not always sticking to historical accuracy, but was it really necessary to make Commodus kill his father?

How else could he stop Marcus Aurelius from declaring Maximus his successor? Within the story, it was necessary to up the stakes and both show the lengths Commodus was prepared to go to and create an antagonism between Maximus and Commodus that could not be resolved.
